Jordan's POV:
The world we live in. Oh boy is it crazy.
Everyone is born with a highlight. It appears when you are very little. It can be a single strand of hair, on your tips, or mixed in with your hair. For me, it's on the ends of my hair. The color of the highlight is based on the color of your soulmate's eyes. This can range from a dark brown to a light blue to a mix of colors. Mine is very... different... though. I have purple highlights. A rare color to be given.
Personally I'm not a fan of it. I have tried everything to get it out. Bleach, dye, water, paint, nothing can get rid of it. People made fun of me in the past or give me looks a lot. I just give them a look and continue my day. None of that phases me though. I just need to find a purple eyed person.
Today, I walked home from the office. I work for a video game development company in Los Angles. They hired me not too long ago, maybe three months top. Fresh out of college and new to the world of adulthood. The weather was nothing out of the odd. It was all sunny skies with a few scattered clouds. I kept feeling something though. I couldn't even describe the feeling if someone asked me to. I just knew something felt odd. At the time, I was feeling a bit thirsty and tired so I decided to go so Starbucks.
I fixed the gray beanie on top of my head I use to hide my hair. There was a Starbucks a block away from my apartment. As I walked the few blocks to get there, I stuck my hands in my pocket and looked around. There was not a lot of traffic on the streets since I decided to go home early. All you could see was a few school buses and the normal amount of cars. There's not much of a change in the number of people walking on the sidewalks.
I finally reached Starbucks after a not very long walk. As I walked inside, I'm immediately hit with the scent of coffee and freshly baked pastries. The place was full of people typing away on laptops, having conversations with other people, or just enjoying the food they bought and looking around. I joined the line of people waiting to order. When it's my turn to order, I saw a short, college-age looking girl at the counter. Her purple hair was pinned up in a bun and her face gave me a warm smile. I never got a chance to catch the color of her eyes before she started speaking.
"Welcome to Starbucks! What may I get you today?" she asked perkily and kindly. I gave her a small smile in return.
"Umm... May I have an iced coffee please."
"What size?"
"Grande."
"That will be 2 dollars and 63 cents please." I handed her three dollars. She hands me my change back. "Thank you and have a nice day!" I nodded in response and waited for my coffee to be made. Once it was made, I sat outside at a table. I casually scrolled through social media while drinking my coffee. A little while later, I heard a faint sound. I looked around to find the same girl who took my order arguing with someone on the phone. I couldn't figure out what she was saying, but the girl looked very upset and annoyed by it. She hung up and looked down upset.
Going against my normally introvert personality, I decided to talk to her. She was leaning against the wall mumbling to herself. She was looking down and letting her dark purple hair fall over her face. I casually walked over and stood in front of her. "Are you okay?" I asked quietly. She looked up at me. Her face was mixed with emotions: anger, sadness, annoyed, and confused.
"I-I'm fine. Just my stupid ex being himself- wait why am I even telling you? I don't even know you!" Her voice was quieter and in a sadder tone then when I first saw her. I took a step back away from her.
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay. I saw you looked upset, so I decided to talk to you. If you don't want to talk I understand." I started to walk away.
Before I could walk too far I heard the quiet voice say, "W-Wait, you wanted to make sure I was okay? Normally strangers I've met don't care about the other's feelings." She started explaining things to me. I nodded and we sat down at my table to talk more. Soon enough, we had been talking and learning things about each other for an hour. We both decided it was time to go and got up.
"Thanks for talking to me... I just realize I never got your name," she said giggling. I laughed as well and smiled.
"It's Jordan. Jordan Maron." I stuck out my hand.
"Ianite Kikoku." Ianite shakes my hand and we smile at each other. She seems to remember something and grabs a napkin and pen out of her bag. Ianite writes down something and hands it to me. "If you ever want to talk here's my number. Have a good day Jordan!" Ianite walks out perkily. I look at her and smile one more time. Her light purple eyes are sparkling from the sunlight. Purple... interesting.
And that's how I met my best friend. Now I've known her for a year, and it has been a fantastic year.
><><><><
I was sitting on my couch and playing Mario Kart against Ianite. She was laughing to a point where her face was red. I sat on the other side of the couch annoyed at her.
"Are you too salty to be sparkly Jordan? Or is it the fact that I got first place right before you crossed that finish line?" she says playfully while smirking. Her light purple eyes shimmer from the light reflecting off the TV screen while the rest of the room is almost pitch black. That moment of her just sitting there laughing me hits me for a moment. I-It looks like she's an angel. Something made to perfect- wait what am I saying!?! She's my b-best friend I-It's not that I l-like her or anything. Heh. Okay maybe a little bit.
I'm broken out of my trance when I see her waving her hands and snapping her fingers in front of my face. "Hello! Earth to Maron! Stop looking like you saw a ghost or something." I blink and shake my head.
"S-Sorry. I just t-thought of something and my m-mind was remembering s-something," I stutter nervously.
"Sureeeeee. Now we have one problem at hand, my remote died." She shows me the lifeless controller and throws it lightly on the other couch.
"Let me go look for some batteries." I get up and search in the rooms around me. The batteries just have seem to have grown legs and walked away. I sigh in defeat.
"Jordan I can just sit back and watch. You play." She gets up and hands me the controller. I shake my head and hand it back to her.
"You keep it. I'll take a break. Besides I need it." I notice how dark it is outside and look at the time. "Oh dang it's almost 11. Do you just want to stay the night and you can stay in the guest room?"
"Yeah. Do you mind if I borrow something of yours though. I kinda spilt coffee all over myself after work right before I left." I nod and head to my room. I give her a gray t-shirt. She runs to the bathroom and changes shirts. The one I gave her seems kind of big on her. "Thanks Jordan! You're the best." She hugs me (Ianite is like 5'2 and Jordan is 5'7 so she's up to his shoulder BC cute fight differences.) and I swear I feel a pair of lips quickly peck my shirt. I'll just ignore it for now. I'm already in a black t-shirt and green shorts, so I don't need to change.
"Ok since both of us refuse to take the controller what do we do?" I ask.
"Well we could do what normal humans do and share that one. I control it from one side and control the buttons and you do the same for the other side."
"Okay, that can work." I sit on the couch with the controller in my left hand. She sits on the right side of me so close that our legs are literally touching. Her hand helps hold the other side and control the buttons. We try for one round and lose in last place. Both of us just laugh the whole time.
"Good job for going backwards," Ianite says sarcastically.
"Good job for running off the road twice," I reply back. We both go into a fit of laughter again. I fix my beanie again. There's a moment of silence before Ianite speaks.
"Why do you always have a hat on? It's like you don't want people seeing your hair," she asks. I pause for a moment wide eyed.
"It's just me. I'm not very fond of my hair." She leans towards me and reaches for my hat. I back away slowly. She ends up giving up and pouting. I laugh at her face.
"Shouldn't I be asking that you as well. I never see the colored piece for you." She shifts uncomfortably and looks down.
"I-It's just tucked behind my ear. That's all," she's acting shy all of the sudden again. I look at her when an idea pops in my head.
"Can I do something?" I ask. She looks back up at me confused.
"Well sure, but it depends I-". I cut her off by kissing her. She kisses back and I untuck her hair from behind her ear. She decides to take off my beanie at the same time. We look into each other's eyes. I look at the piece of hair in my hand. It's brown, like a piece of milk chocolate. She looks up at my hair and drops her jaw.
"It's... Oh my god your hair looks amazing. I can't understand why you would want to hide that. It's a giant mess though." She gets up to stand behind me and combs her fingers through my hair to fix it. She does this with other people she know's hair a lot. Especially her two brothers' hair.
"Not everyone thinks it looks nice. Especially in school." She frowns and keeps running her hands through my hair even though it looks neat now.
"It's so soft and pretty. Also it's so unique," she says quietly, mesmerized. She clears her throat before looking at me again and stops touching my hair. "Sorry, you know I have that habit. Don't let other people's opinions get in the way of way you live your life though. Also good job making a move before I could." She giggles lightly and blushes.
"You were going to also?" She nods. My face gets red and hot. "So... Um... Since that happened do you maybe... Um... W-Want to g-go-" I just keep stuttering before she places her fingers on my lips to make me shut up.
"Yes Jordan Maron, I would love to go on a date with you." She kisses my cheek. I smile and blush. I think I may have found my purple eyed match.
