Apocalypse Lovers (Tonja)

Plot: The dreaded zombie apocalypse has happened. The flesh eaters every place you look. People struggle to stay alive. Could love even stay alive at this time?

Sonja's POV:

"Coast is clear!" my boyfriend, Tucker, yells from ahead of us. The rest of the search pack runs in with our guns at ready. Today, we are assigned to raid a small gas station a couple of miles from base. What we need? Anything we can find. Food, water, medicine, batteries, clothes, anything to help us survive this awful apocalypse. This has been happening for maybe three months now? Only the fittest and most skilled of us all are able to survive.

"Sir, doors are secure," one of the men in our group say. I keep looking around the place to find supplies. All I have so far is a few packs of beef jerky, sunglasses, and a shirt that has USA on it. Everyone else finishes looking and we head out. The same routine as always. Suddenly there is a snarl coming from behind me. I see a zombie walking towards me and I raise my gun at it and shoot. It falls to the ground and a few more come in. I shoot them and run out with everyone else.

All of us run to the car and speed off before the others find us. I gaze out the window at the passing forest and road. The feeling of a tiny clink against my shirt comes to me. My locker I have from before the zombies is the thing causing that. I open it up to see both Tucker and I smiling. In the other one I'm looking up at him inches away from his face. I still remember that day, it was before we moved to Portland, back in LA. I miss that place a lot still. The locket closes, and I go back to looking out the window.

Once we return to camp, I drop off my stuff and head to my room. Tucker runs after me and taps my shoulder. "You need to remember to look out." Great just the words I needed to hear.

"And you need to remember how to be a boyfriend and not an army commander," I spit out at him. He stops where he is and I continue walking. He runs back and stands in front of me putting his hands on my shoulders.

"Sonja... It's not my fault I was given the post as a commander. I've had to act all tough and like one. I'm trying to keep people alive."

"And because of 'acting tough' I am not able to get some attention or love? That's probably one too. I just wish it was how it was before this. Back in normal Portland and LA. At least then I wouldn't feel like you wouldn't care if I got eaten by those flesh eaters." I push his arms away from me and run off in a full sprint. Tucker stands there hurt and wide eyed.

I shove open the door to our cabin and fall on the bed crying. He probably won't come anyway. Memories of us pass through my brain. I miss the old me. The Twitch streaming/Entertainer/ Booty touches/Great life me. It is all different now. Curse those stupid zombies. I lay here and think until eventually I fall asleep.

Tucker's POV:

I just messed up. Big time. She probably hates me even more now because of that. I walk over to the lake and sit on a log. The peacefulness in the atmosphere is quite nice. At least I get some time to myself now.

"Tucker! We need you for an emergency trip stat. The trip may last for about two weeks. It would be more in the city and-"

"No Bongo. I'm not going. I want to resign for a bit. For my girlfriend's sake. For mine own sake. So go tell Bliz he can go get another goddamn commander for now," I say.

"Girlfriend? But sir this is for humanity. For us to get rid of these flesh eaters. So that we can live."

"And you can tell your commander that I don't care. Sonja means the world to me and because of this she is mad at me. I love her. Now shut up, accept the fact, and go tell him." Bongo stares at me for a moment then runs back to camp. It feels nice to not have to do things. Now I can focus on Sonja and take a break from all of the things that stressed me out. It's like a... weight being lifted off my shoulders.

I head back to the cabin only to find Sonja asleep on the bed. I fix her to where she is laying on the pillow and I cover her up. Then I lay on the other side of the bed and hold her in my arms. My fingers stroke her soft, beautiful hair and my forehead lays on the top of her head.

"Sonja, I'm an idiot. I should have declined the opportunity to command a squad. I should have been a better boyfriend. I love you and I'm sorry about this. If I could go back to how it was before I would in a heartbeat. For you. For us," I whisper. I kiss the top of her head lightly. I see a faint smile on her face. She snuggles into my chest and I smile even more. Just like old times. Before the world got overtaken.

A few minutes later she moves in her sleep more and her eyes open. Sonja looks at me and smiles. I hold her closer and kiss her forehead which makes her smile even more.

"I heard what you said Tucker. I love you, you big salt shaker." She kisses me and it feels like falling in love all over again.

"You know, I just did deny a mission for you. Bongo looked at me like I lost my mind. It was kinda funny." We laughed and smiled.

"Well thank you. I guess you can get some boyfriend points for that," she giggles.

"And what can I get with these 'boyfriend points'?"

She kisses me passionately for a second. "That's one thing."

"I like these boyfriend points."

"I love you Tucker."

"I love you too Sonja."

Flash forward 10 years:

I sit out on the deck of our new house. Looking out at the lake makes everything seem so peaceful. Better then that dreaded zombie apocalypse.

The apocalypse ended 4 years ago. Doctors created a vaccine to cure the virus that caused the zombies in the first place. Ever since that, no one had the virus. We started rebuilding places. Then soon enough everything returned to normal. As normal as things could be.

"Papa! Papa!" Our four year old boy, Lucas, shouts. "Tell me the story of the zambies! Mama is busy so she can't." I smile and laugh. He sits in my lap and looks up at me smiling. Then I start the story. He looks at me interested and tuned into the story. I finish it and Sonja comes outside also.

"And that's how your mama and I survived the zombies. Love can survive anything. Even if it is a bunch of zombies." I took her hand and smiled at her. We did it together. We survived.
