Chapter 16: The Voices in My Head.
Song: Where Are ü Now (because literally this song is my life right now)
Toms p.o.v.
When I woke up, the storm was still going on. I could hear it thundering through the walls of the dojo. Oddly enough, it didn't wake up Sparklez. He was still sleeping soundly when I woke up. At least he wasn't shaking in fear anymore. I was starving. I slowly got up from the bed and tried to be as quiet as possible while I snuck to the door.
"Mmh...where are you going?" I heard Sparklez yawn. Dangit. I turned back to the bed where a sleepy Sparklez was sat up in.
"I'm hungry." I replied bluntly.
"Okay..." He shrugged sleepily and laid back down. He was too exhausted to even talk. Poor Sparklez.
I sneaked up stairs to the kitchen only walking on my toes. I wasn't sure if Tucker and Sonja were still sleeping. Better safe than sorry. I soon found out that Sonja was awake, because I could smell breakfast as soon as I reached the living room.
"Good evening bed hog. Want some dinner?" I heard Sonja laugh. Sure enough she was standing next to the stove with an apron on and a spatula in her hand.
"Evening? Did I sleep in all day?" It sure didn't feel like it.
"Yup. All of you did. I never slept a wink last night, so I've been up for awhile. And Id just like to say, the way you and Sparklez spoon is adorable." She teased.
"What? You watched us sleep? You're a perv!" I accused her.
"I just came down to see if you guys wanted wanted breakfast. Instead I got a face full of cute spooning. Is he always the little spoon?"
I blushed. "Most of the time. Whatcha cooking?" It smelled really good.
"Brunch because you guys didn't eat breakfast. Go get up those other two bed junkies. I'm not waking up Tucker from his hibernation."
I groaned. "Do I gotta?"
"If you want to eat, then you gotta." She retorted. Damn her and her sassiness.
I went to wake Sparklez up first because I wasn't looking forward to waking up the salt shaker.
Terrence was still snoozing on the end of our bed right beside my husbands feet. He must have been exhausted too.
I creeped over to his side of the bed and inched as close to his face as possible. I think he felt me breathing on him because he soon opened his eyes. "Why are you in my face?" He asked tiredly.
"Come get breakfast. We've slept in all afternoon. You need food." I pecked his lips and he groaned.
"I don't wanna..." He turned over to the other side and pulled the covers over his head.
"Sparklez..." I warned.
"Mhmm...what?" He yawned again.
"You said no to me."
I think he realized his mistake because he suddenly stopped talking all together. That's not gonna save him.
I yanked the covers off and jerked his legs towards me and he started squealing. "What are you doing?!" He yelled.
"Teaching you a lesson. Never say no to me." I picked him up roughly and threw him over my shoulder, and he responded with a squeak. "Put me down!" He demanded.
"Nah. Let's go upstairs so Sonja can see you pee yourself." I was gonna tickle him senseless.
"No! I won't do it again! I swear!" He tried to wiggle out of my grasp as I carried him up the stairs, but I was still stronger than he was and I could pin him when I wanted to.
"Too late. Stop struggling or I'll tickle you harder when we get up here." I warned. He didn't stop though. I sighed and stopped when I reached Tucker's room. I knocked loudly on the door with my free hand. "Tucker! Wake up! Come watch my husband pee on himself while you eat breakfast!"
I continued up the stairs with a wriggling Sparklez on my shoulder. He was gonna get it when I got up here.
I finally reached the living room and stormed over to the couch, throwing Sparklez on it with all my might. He immediately tried to run away, but I pinned him back down. "Any last words before I make you piss yourself?" I grinned at him.
"Sonja help!" He yelled for Sonja.
She looked at us with an odd face.
"Should I leave while you two get it on or...?"
"Nah, I'm just gonna tickle him until he pees. I promise I'll clean it up later. May I?"
"No! Let me go! Sonja!" He made one last attempt to get away, but it was futile. I sat down on his waist so he wouldn't be able to get up again.
"Sorry Sparklez, but I really want to see you pee yourself. Carry on Tom." She went back to putting food on plates.
I could see the utter fear in my husbands eyes when I looked back to him. Without any warning whatsoever, I attacked his sides with my fingers.
"Gah! N-No!" He laughed and tried to squirm away but I kept him still.
"Now, if you repeat what I say, I'll let you go. And you better hurry. I think your bladders dying to let loose." I jabbed my fingers deeper into his ribs and he screamed.
"Haha! Okay! Just stop!" He pleaded.
"Okay. Say, Toms the best and he's always right." I ordered him.
"Tom the best-haha! And he's always r-right!" He choked out through his laughter. I still wasn't done yet.
"Good. Now say, Tom can have my bod whenever he wants." I was gonna make him so embarrassed.
I heard Sonja laugh from the kitchen at my demands.
"N-No!" His cheeks flooded with red. In response to his defiance, I began to tickle his stomach.
"Ah! Okay! Tom can have my bod whenever he wants!"
I eased up on him a little. "Last thing. I will always love Tom no matter what."
"I will always love Tom no matter what." I stopped tickling him and leaned in for a kiss, to which he responded back with one too.
"God what did I walk in on?" I heard someone ask grumpily.
Tucker walked past the couch and gave me a funny look as he passed by.
"Just tickling my husband against his will."
He just shook his head and walked into the kitchen to greet Sonja.
"I hate you." Sparklez spat underneath me.
"You love me. Come on, let's get some breakfast."
~
"My communicator isn't working..." Sparklez mumbled beside me. He was fiddling with his device with irritation written on his face.
"What's wrong with it?"
"I don't know. It's like there's no signal or something. I can't call Mot." He sighed, obviously frustrated.
"Why do you wanna call Mot?" I'm sure he was fine. He was a tough dude.
"He's watching Ianita. I haven't spoke to him since yesterday. I'm really worried..." I felt him lean his head on my shoulder.
"I'm sure she's fine. Mot will protect her. Stop worrying so much." I booped his nose and he smiled.
Thunder boomed and shook the walls, making him cling to me. I laughed and pulled him into my lap. "You're okay."
He smiled shyly and blushed a little. He looked so cute when he blushed. I couldn't help but kiss him.
His arms snaked around my neck and mine went around his waist. I felt his hand dragging down my hair and his other holding my cheek. I traced small circles on his back as he worked his magic.
"Um, I don't mean to interrupt, but there's a god standing in our living room."
We immediately scrambled away from eachother because of the voice. Sonja stood in the door way with a smug grin on her face. Wait, she said standing. So it was an live god. Mianite.
I could feel the terror radiating off my husband. He's still scared to death of Mianite, I realized. He still thinks it was him who caused all of our troubles.
"Hey, he's cool. He didn't hurt any of us on the mission. You can trust him."
He simply nodded and sucked in a breath. I guided him out of the bed, and we both followed Sonja up the stairs to the living room. I felt him grip my hand tightly as we got closer.
This is gonna be interesting.
Jordan's p.o.v.
You can trust him. Tom said so.
But what about all the times he tried to kill us?!
Shut up! You're overreacting.
He's bad. I don't care what anyone says. He's a bad person.
I growled to myself as the voices kept arguing. One part of myself wanted to trust Mianite. The other was screaming at me to run away as far as possible and never look back. I didn't know which one to follow.
But it was too late to run when we reached the living room. Tucker stood beside him with a stone cold expression. Does he always act like this around gods? The bravest person on earth?
They were talking about something. A deal maybe, but I couldn't understand it. They stopped when we came near and the god turned to look.
He was a lot different from our Mianite. He looked...old. One part of his face had wrinkles and white hair. The other was robotic. He had a white suit on instead of the robe our Mianite used to wear. He smiled a genuine smile when he saw me. "Ah Sparklez. It's wonderful to finally meet you. I've heard much about you from Gaines and Syndicate. Gaines especially." He chuckled. I didn't know what to say. He acted like a good person. Should I trust him?
No! He's a murderer! He sent an assassin to kill his brother!
"Uh Sparklez. I think he wants you to shake his hand." Tom nudged me.
I stared at the god's out stretched hand. Should I shake his hand?
Murderer! Murderer! Don't trust him!
I slowly shook his hand and pulled away after a second. The awkward silence in the room was deafening.
"I assume you haven't heard many great things about me, hm?" He inquired.
You killed your brother for power! You shunned Ianite! You tried to kill Andor!
"Not really." I said shortly.
He sighed. "Helgrind has made me a power hungry god in your eyes. I apologize for that. He was not...one of my most stable apostles. I assure you I had no part in this Inertia business. I was never told they were holding a young boy in captivity to be tortured. Especially that the young boy being tortured was my beloved nephew."
How could you have not known? Did you even look over for a second to see him dying because of his father?
"But I promise, I am here to make things right. I wish to have my dear brother back here with me. I will do anything to achieve that."
You were the one who killed him in the first place!
"Now, onto the business I wish to discuss. These storms."
"What's causing these storms m'lord?" Tucker asked. Wow he's a suck up.
"Remember that talk about quintessence? About how it keeps this world from breaking apart and falling into the void? Well, the lack of god quintessence is causing these storms. From Gaines predictions, there will be many of these odd weather patterns in the future. Yesterday I saw a rare weather appearance in this land. A tornado."
Tornado?! Is that why the wind was so bad?! Oh my gods we flew in tornado weather.
"Gaines predicts this is only a minor one. There will be much more dangerous weather appearances. I just wanted you all to know incase anything else strange happens around here. I fear if we do not bring my brother back soon, the world will fall into the void. Oh, and another thing I'd like to ask. A few months ago I found that my sister has returned to her home town. Sparklez, do you have an idea as to where she is? I must discuss our plans about brother."
I felt a pang in my heart at the mention of Ianite. I keep forgetting she's gone. Mianite must not even know she's dead.
"She's gone." I could hear my own pain in my voice.
"Gone? You mean...oh." His face fell. I actually felt bad for him. He lost his last sibling. "May I ask how she passed?"
"She...she just...ash." I made a poofing action with my hand.
"I understand. I am deeply sorry for your loss. You seem to be suffering far more than I at the moment." He put a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"I don't mean to interrupt the loss thing, but is there anything we can do to help the void problem?" Sonja interrupted.
"I'm afraid not. Although I advise you to help the nearby residence. There are some citizens that have returned to your town and they are scared for their lives. If the weather gets too extreme, perhaps you should evacuate them to a refuge. That is all have to say. I have much business to attend to so I must go. It was nice meeting you, Sparklez." The god nodded towards me before heading out the door in a rush.
It was silent for awhile. I think we were all still trying to process everything he said.
"So...you trust him now?" Tom broke the silence.
"I don't know..." This would be a lot easier if these voices would stop talking.
"You look like you just faced death. I've never seen you this pale." Tucker laughed.
I did face death! He's a killer! He is power hungry!
But we can trust him. He said he did nothing. He didn't know about the Inertia.
He's lying! Liar! Liar!
"Shut up!" I yelled at the voices. I clamped my hands over my ears and let out a frustrated growl.
Why can't they stop arguing? They're driving me insane!
"Sorry dude...I meant it as a joke." Tucker wore a hurt expression. No! I didn't mean him!
"No! It isn't...ugh!" They didn't stop. They just kept arguing with eachother.
"Sparklez?" I felt Toms hand try to pull away one of my arms. Why didn't he understand? I'm just trying to block them out!
I jerked away from him and ran to the stairs. I need to sleep. They don't argue when I sleep. I ran down the stairs two steps at a time. I finally reached the bedroom and I laid down on the sheets. I pulled the cover over my head and shut my eyes.
A monster. He killed people. And you think you can trust him?!
He's polite and kind. We should trust him.
No! Never let anyone else in! You made that promise!
"Why wont you stop...." I moaned into my pillow.
"Why won't what stop?" I heard a British voice ask. I soon felt arms wrap around my torso and I melted into them.
I pulled the covers from my face so I could see him. He was laying beside me with a worried expression.
"The voices. They won't stop arguing."
"What voices? Are you hearing voices again?"
"I've always heard them...when I was with Ianita, they were always quiet and I could barely hear them. Now they're so loud it's hurting my ears." I rubbed my temples to ease the ache.
"What are they arguing about?"
"Mianite...whether to trust him or not...one voice says it's okay, he's a good person and he never did any of those things. The other one is screaming murderer and liar every five seconds."
"Which one do you think is right?"
"I don't know...I just wanna sleep. They don't argue when I sleep."
I shut my eyes again. I felt a pair of lips kiss my neck and the covers being drawn over me.
The last thing I remember is the sound of Toms humming and the thunder roaring in the background.
They found a way to argue in my dreams.
I saw a lot of things. I saw a dark figure stabbing through Dianites chest with a sword. I saw an old man watering flowers and caring for his nephew and niece. It seemed to carry on forever like this. One scene showing a power hungry murderer killing my friends. Another would show a harmless elderly man saving lives.
The dreams ended with one final scene.
I was standing on Mianites coast. The waves were so scary. The sky was dark. I see two gods fighting. A woman dressed in purple was screaming for them to stop, telling them the unbalance was hurting the world. White lightening struck the middle of the beach, and the ground began to tear itself open. The younger brother fell first. And then the woman let out one last sob, before flinging herself in the void. The remaining god only laughed. The world began to fall into the void. The sand, the water, even the clouds. And finally, with one last scream sounding in the air, I fell in too.
I jolted up right and clutched my chest. It was so hot. My body felt like it was on fire. I tried to breathe but my throat was so dry. It was impossible.
"You can't even make up your mind. Why did I even marry a pathetic loser like you?" I heard a condescending voice ask.
I felt hands shove me off the bed. I landed on the floor with a loud thud. Tom stood over me, horns poking out from his head and his teeth sharp as knives as he smirked at me.
"You are nothing. That's all you'll ever be." He kicked me hard and I fell back, falling endlessly into the void that replaced the floor.
Falling. Falling. Falling.
I heard the voices of everyone I loved screaming in pain, as if they were dying. I heard evil chuckles. I heard crying. That's what troubled me the most.
I finally landed. I was in a field and it was storming. I still heard screaming, but it was just one voice now.
"Daddy! Daddy help!"
Ianita.
I could see her running towards me. Why was she here? Why wasn't she with Mot?
I saw something chasing her. It was Mianite. He was taking steady strides, and he was still catching up to her. Oh god. Please no. I have to save her. I began to run towards her as well. He was faster.
I didn't make it.
I saw the end of his sword go through her small stomach, and she made a small whimper. Her knees buckled and she fell limply to the ground. Her eyes. They were blank.
Dark chuckles filled the deafening silence. Tom appeared out of no where and scooped up her dead body from the ground. A hole opened up in front of me. He kept his eyes locked on mine the entire time. I watched him throw my daughter in the void.
"NO! NO! NOOO!"
"Sparklez! Calm down! Relax!"
I snapped my eyes open. Is this real? Is this a dream? I looked over to the other side of the bed, expecting Tom to still have pointy horns and sharp teeth. He didn't. It was my Tom. Brown eyes and dimples and blue hair.
"Tom?" I touched his face just to make sure. He smiled and held the hand I had on his face.
"Yeah. You alright?"
"You would never hurt Ianita, would you?"
"What? No. Why would you ask me that? I wouldn't hurt a kid."
I sighed in relief and hugged him. "I miss my little girl..."
"Let me guess, you had a dream that I killed her?"
"No. Mianite killed her. You threw her body into the void." I sniffled.
"Jeez Sparklez. Your dreams are terrifying."
"I just wanna know if she's okay. That Mianite hasn't done anything to her."
"She's fine boyo. Mots playing dress up with her." I heard a god chuckle. I felt relief wash over me. Dianite says she's okay. Thank god.
"Does she miss me?" I asked the ceiling.
"Yes, she misses her uncle too." Uncle. She misses Tom.
"Why in gods name does she miss me?" I heard Tom scoff. I elbowed him in the side and he whined.
"Perhaps it's because you taught her many things about bitches?" The god teased.
I narrowed my eyes at Tom and he grinned. "My bad."
"I assure you Glitter lap, my brother isn't even aware of that child's existence. He wouldn't harm a child of his sisters anyhow. He knows better. Anyways, I must be going back to Mots now. He needs the extra comfort. Thunderstorms are one of the few things that terrify that boy. Your daughter is braver than he, at the moment."
I laughed and Tom did too. I couldn't imagine Mot being scared of anything.
"Yes well I'll be off then. I better tend to Mot before he urinates on himself. Goodbye."
When he left, the room was overcome by silence. I was thinking and Tom was too I guess. I remembered Mianites words in my head. The void. Was is just an endless dark pit? Like the one we jumped in after saving m'lady? I hoped not. I didn't want to fall again. Those months were the most boring of my life.
"Whatcha thinkin about?" Tom nudged me.
"The future..." I sighed.
"Well stop. You're making yourself sad. Just be happy right now. Don't think about that stuff."
"How am I not supposed to think about it when it's this dim and hopeless?" The future always seemed hopeless. When were things gonna get better? When was I gonna be able to live my life peacefully?
"Sparklez...please don't get all suicidal on me again." He said tiredly.
I mentally stopped doing everything.
"What are you talking about?" I sat up and gave him an angry glare. He acted like it was typical of me to be suicidal. I only attempted it once, and when I had I didn't have any control over my thoughts or body. Every thought and instinct was screaming at me to jump and end it. I didn't want to die then. I wanted to get better. Why is he acting like this?
"I said don't get all suicidal again. Can't you just clear your mind for awhile? This stuff wears the both of us out."
I felt like screaming at him. I felt like throwing chairs at his face and punching and kicking him everywhere.
Typical suicidal Jordan. Always wanting attention. He's tired of you, y'know.
No not you again. Just go away. Please.
Make me go away? I can't go away. I'm you. I'm the you that you hate the most. The you that faces the actual truth. You like living in fantasies and pretending everything is okay. Nothing's ever okay around you. Everyone dies or gets beaten or raped.
My anger changed into complete and utter shame. Lola. Ianite. Andor. Tom. Capsize.
And then the worst possible thing I ever could have ever imagined happened. I started hearing their voices.
"You killed me, you idiot child." Ianite spat.
"Why did you do this to me? Why?" I heard Lola sob.
"If you hadn't shown up, I would still have my wings. And my sanity." Andor sighed disappointed.
"If I had not loved ye, maybe I would still be with me brother. I hate you Sparklez." Capsize shamed me.
"I wish I never met you. You destroyed my life. Useless. Damn useless." Tom muttered.
"ITS NOT MY FAULT!" I screamed at him. He flinched back with shock. Wait, did he say that? Or the voices? I don't know anymore. Ianite please save me. I can't do this anymore.
"Hey, calm down okay? Please calm down?" He looked scared. Why is he scared? And then I caught a glimpse at my hands.
The flames were growing. Toms scared I might hurt him. Might? No, I will if I dont get out of here.
I made a dash out of the bed when I felt an arm pull me back.
"No! Don't leave! I just got you back!" Tom turned me around to face him and he had tears in his eyes.
"I'm gonna hurt you! Im a monster! Just leave me alone!" I shouted in his face. I have to leave. I have to run as far away as possible and never come back. If I go past Urulu I'm sure I could get-
"Daddy?"
I spun my head to the door way. Ianita stood at the bottom step of the stairs with a sad look on her pale face.
"Mommy says you need help. I help?" She reached her arms up for me. What is she doing here? Where's Mot?
"I help daddy. Mommy says I help. Let me help daddy." She walked closer to me and placed her small hand on my pant leg. Her hair was damp, like she's been walking in the rain. She was shivering slightly, but she didn't seem to mind at all. She was wearing the pajamas Martha gave her awhile back. They were drenched as well.
"What are you doing here?! Where's Mot?! Did you come here yourself?!" I bent down and pulled back her wet hair and wiped the water from her cheeks.
"Let me help you daddy. Mommy says I help you." Her hand went to my cheek and she ran her hand over it softly. If felt...calming. All my anger and shame disappeared. The voices faded. Is she doing this? She must be. She helped me last time with the affects.
She removed her hand after a moment and showed me a cute smile. "Mommy says have hope. Mommy says you can do it." She hugged my neck.
Ianite. She heard me. Wherever she is, she heard me. I felt like a knot in my stomach had just become untied.
"Is your mommy happy? Where she is?" I asked through choked tears.
"Yes. She says it's pretty. She can see everybody."
She's happy. That's all I could have hoped for. I hugged Ianita tighter against my chest. If I didn't have her, I don't think I would even be alive.
I felt more arms wrap around me. I looked up from Ianitas shoulder to see Tom hugging the both of us with a single tear rolling down his cheek.
He loves her. He finally loves her.
