Chapter 41: The Rescue Mission
"This rapier is so dull...I can't even kill a spider with it anymore..." I groaned.
My rapier was dulling, and I didn't have time to sharpen it.
We were about to leave in a few moments, off to save Andor and Steve from the inertia. The RV that Tom had showed me ages ago, was flying. Large balloons were holding it up, keeping it from touching the ground. Martha was piling iron and other storage into the empty chest on top of the RV. Everyone was putting on their disguises, hiding their armor underneath. We were going to pose as merchants carrying storage into the prison. We had gone over the plans many many times, just so we didn't mess the plan up. As soon as we got there, they would check our I.Ds and the storage. While they checked, we would sneak into the lower parts of the prison. There we would free Steve, then go to a lower building and retrieve Andor.
We were all at Tucker's dojo, packing everything up into the floating RV in the yard. Tom was helping Martha lack, Tucker was putting on his Mage armor, and Sonja and Wag were polishing and cleaning everything up. I sat beside a cherry tree, examining my rapier.
"Do you want to borrow one of my old diamond swords?" Sonja suggested. She was polishing her blade of choice, which was also a rapier.
"No...it's fine. I don't think it will be any better," I sighed disappointingly.
"Sorry man, I'd give you one but I don't think I have any better weapons," Tucker stated.
'Perhaps I can be of assistance?' A gruff voice asked in my mind.
What?! Am I going nuts?!
'No no, it is just Dianite. I apologize for my rudeness in meeting you, other Spark. My sister has asked me to aid you in your time of need, since she is in a time of rest. If you need a weapon, simply check your bag. I have placed something you might enjoy using to avenge my grand nephew and my loyal follower. I must go now, my sister longs for comfort. I wish you luck, other spark.'
Oh yeah. Ianite had told Martha that she couldn't come today, and I think it was because of Tom. But he didn't have time to go all the way to the end and apologize, we were leaving soon.
He'd have to do it when they got back.
The voice disappeared, and suddenly my bag felt heavier. He really had given me a weapon.
I opened the bag, making sure no one was looking, and felt of the weapon in my hand. Not a rapier, but a scythe? Just as
I was about to pull it out and examine it, when Martha called out to everyone.
"Okay everyone! I think we've packed up most things that we require, is everyone ready?"
Our shouts of excitement filled the air as we boarded the RV ship. Tom and I sat in the back, Tucker and Sonja in the middle, and Martha driving while Wag was in the passenger side.
"Wait, I think I forgot my angel ring..." Wag admitted.
"Angel rings and flying contraptions do not work in the inertia, me and Stevie already tried. I would recommend tucking in your wings heroes, or you might just give us away!"
We all tucked our wings into our cloaks and buckled in.
We began our journey.
~
Never had I imagined the inertia being this huge.
It was a whole island, covered all the way to the edges with steel floors, buildings, guards, and a gigantic statue of Mianite in the center.
This place was definitely a prison.
We pulled into the docking lane, guards covered both lanes side by side. I didn't realize how much protection was in the inertia. Dagrun had not near as many as this place did.
As Martha parked the RV, she let out a deep breath.
"It's been an immense pleasure being with you all, and I hope I still can be after this. Be strong and brave, for your fate relies on your actions and carefulness. Do not say anything that might give them any clue as to where we live or who we are. They know of the fallen heroes in the town of Dagrun. They know of our family and it's indifference. Good luck heroes..."
She pulled her hood over her face, and we followed the action. I removed my red glasses and put them in my small traveling bag, along with my rapier and scythe. I felt Toms hand wrap around mine. We looked at eachother for a moment. His brown eyes saddened by us departing. Possibly forever. One of us could die today. We both knew this.
All of us stood from our seats and began filing out the door.
Tom and I's hands separated, a deep pain in my chest surfaced as we did.
"I love you," he whispered.
"As do I," I whispered back.
I expected sunshine when we walked out, but saw nothing but grey skies and felt choking humidity.
As my feet touched the grey concrete, I felt a bad feeling in my stomach. As if I was no longer safe.
Which was completely true.
One of the many guards surrounding the port walked up to us.
"Please follow me to the security scanner where we will check for any metal devices that may cause harm or danger to our guards. Be hastefull, I haven't got all day. We must load this stuff immediately."
His tone was kinda nasally, but strict and orderly. We didn't say a word as we follows the guard to the security gates.
I began to panick. I didn't show it, but I was. What if they searched my bag? Would they find the weapons and the names engraved on them? The rapier I carried wasn't Sparks, it was one I created called 'Andor's Revenge'.
We all began going through the scanner. The guard ordered we leave all belongings behind, including my bag.
Martha went first, then Tucker, then Sonja, then Wag, and I was the only one left.
I stepped through nervously and walked to my friends solemn faces. The scanner remained silent, I let out a deep breath I'd been holding since we stopped at the gates.
"Alright, follow me while the others sort out your belongings. We will show you where you must store the supplies. Do not stray, or I will have you escorted out."
They were definitely going to search my bag.
My stomach twisted into a knot, I dug my nails into the palms of my hand.
It was something I did when I was nervous or panicky.
I felt gentle fingers unwind mine, catching me off guard. But I realized it was Tom, trying to keep me from panicking.
"Be calm..." I heard him whisper, his voice only audible to me.
I nodded without looking in his direction. I pulled the brown cloak over my head even more, covering my red cheeks.
We walked across the hard concrete, into a large black bricked building.
The guard began explaining all the items and where they needed to be placed. We nodded like we understood, we still hadn't said a single word since we left the RV. The guard began walking to the next storage room in the building, when he stopped.
His small radio attached to his white uniform began to talk. He raised it closer to his mouth and mumbled in-distinctively. I only caught a couple of words from the other person, but they were enough.
"Rapier"...."posers"..."kill immediately"
The knot in my stomach grew, they knew.
It happened so fast.
The guard turned to me, since I was directly in front, and raised his sword. I had nothing to defend myself, I raised my arm to protect my face.
Crimson liquid fell onto my cheeks as the sword slashed at my arm. I gritted my teeth from the pain, a burning sensation followed. I saw him raise the sword again. I was done for.
I saw from a side ways glance as Tom pushed past the others and pulled out a hidden sword from one of his traveler boots. How did he get that past the gates?
He lout out a growl as he slashed the guard in the neck, the guard not even realizing what had happened. His sword fell from his hand and landed beside me. His body fell and I scrambled to get out of the way. His lifeless body fell near me.
He had died immediately.
"FOLLOW ME! HURRY, WE MUSNT LET THEM CATCH US YET!" Martha screamed as she began to run past me, the others following behind. I felt arms wrap around my torso and lift me to my feet.
"It's okay, you're fine! We need to go now!" Tom pulled my good arm towards him as he began to run.
I followed, but I was in immense pain from the cut. I wasn't gonna look at it, I would only get sicker.
We climbed a metal latter, up into a higher part of the building. It led to a dimly lit hallway, with a steel bridge at the end of it leading outside. Martha ran straight ahead for it, and we followed close behind. As we approached the bridge, there was a small looking gap. It was about the size of two pieces of fence put together, but still a very big jump.
And the drop, well let's just say it would definitely kill you if you fell.
"We have to jump. It's the only way to we can get to the prison without getting caught," Martha told us.
She jumped across, reaching past the gap and onto the other side.
We all hesitated.
"Please! We must hurry! They're on their way!" She begged.
I heard Tucker take a deep breath, he sprinted to the gap and jumped over, barely making it.
Sonja jumped next, she made it. Tucker greeted her with a kiss.
Tom stepped back and took a run and go. He made it across easily, without issue.
He turned to me and smiled reassuringly. "It's easy! Just step back a little! You can do it!"
Wag whimpered behind me. "I dislike heights...and parkour..."
I can do this.
I stepped back like Tom told me, and ran to the gap. I sprawled out my feet and managed to land perfectly in front of Tom. He hugged me tightly.
We all turned to Wag, waiting for him to jump.
He looked really nervous, but took a few steps back preparing to leap.
He sprinted, but faltered in step as he jumped.
His hands gripped tightly at the end of our side of the bridge, his legs dangling to the ground below.
"WAG!" Sonja screamed as she ran to him. Tucker ran to him also, they both gripped at his wrist as he started slipping.
"I can't do it...just leave me," he whimpered miserably.
"No! We are not leaving you! Come on, grab onto us!" Tucker shouted.
I closed my eyes and held onto Tom. I couldn't watch.
"He's out, he's okay!" Tom said shaking me.
I opened my eyes and saw Tucker and Sonja holding a very pale Wag.
I breathed out a sigh of relief. We hadn't lost anyone yet.
We continued to run down dark hallways and rusty bridges. Martha started leading us down a ramp, a very huge ramp.
Finally, she led us into a large dark area, filled with prison cells. Even the floor was covered in metal wire, making it difficult to walk without tripping.
"Steve must be in one of these...search around and call for him."
As much as I loved Steve, I really just wanted to see Andor. I hope he's okay.
"What about Andor? Isn't he down here?" I asked as Martha searched up and down the cells.
"No, he is in a different prison. Do not fret, we will save him soon. Worry about Stevie for now."
"STEVE!" I heard Tom yell, he was in front of us. He was smiling, looking into a cell with pure joy on his face.
"SYNDY!" I heard Steve yell.
We all ran towards the cell Tom was looking in.
Sure enough, there stood Steve.
His clothes were worn and dirty, his hat was missing but his dirty blonde hair still covered his eyes. He looked like he's been roughed up quite a bit, he had a few bruises here and there. His wings were gone, he didn't seem to care. But he looked fine besides that. He was gripping the bars and looking at us all.
"The switch be over there, hurry before them Mianite soldiers come back!"
I ran to the switch on the other wall and pulled it down. All of the cells unlocked, but all of them were empty besides Steve's.
Martha ran to Steve and kissed him passionately. Steve's hands roughed through her purple lavender hair.
Everyone turned slightly away in disgust, the lovers paused for a moment during the kiss.
"Martha...I thought I might never see ye again..." Steve breathed.
"Oh Stevie..." She swooned.
Yeah, it was a little corny and affectionate.
"Guys, sorry to interrupt the reunion, but we need to go! The guards are entering through the main doors!" Tucker shouted from the window. He was looking out over the sidewalks.
"Right, let's go get my nephew back!" Martha exclaimed.
~
We managed to use a secret back entrance from the building we were in and leave without being noticed.
Martha and Steve led us to the center of the inertia, where the Mianite statue was located.
They rolled away a gigantic wooden wheel, revealing an entrance into the statue.
"They kept em' in here, from what I saw with me eyes."
Steve walked into the dark hole, pulling Martha's hand as she went along with him.
We followed into the dark cave, the only lighting in sight was at the end of the cave.
"This way heroes," Martha whispered.
We followed her into the bright light.
We ended up in a bright white room. It was covered in photos and statues and alters, all created for Mianite.
Was this some kind of correction facility?
For people who didn't believe in Mianite?
"He should be through here, in one of these cells." Martha pulled open a door in one of the hallways, revealing a dark and pitch black room. The room actually looked like a gigantic dome, covered in pure iron and steel.
Cells lined every walls and corner, cages hung from the ceiling, the floor was scattered with various bones and old looking torture devices. Some I had no idea what some were used for.
Had they used these on Andor?
My chest began to weigh a ton at the thought.
Once again, none of the cells were occupied. It's like they hadn't been used in a long time, years maybe.
"Andor?!" Martha called out.
No answer.
"Andor mate, where are ye?!"
The quiet made my chest throb.
"ANDOR?!" Tom yelled.
We all began calling his name. But each time we received no answer.
"Oh my god...what if he's dead..." I whispered to myself.
The others were ahead of me, searching for him.
I sunk beside a cell and put my head in my hands. He's dead. I know it.
His father probably ordered him to be killed.
Tears leaked from my eyes, but they couldn't be seen in this darkness.
My friends voices continued to linger as I sobbed quietly for my lost friend.
I felt something touch my back, and I immediately jumped thinking it was one of the guards. I backed quickly away from the cell and squinted into the darkness behind the rusty cell.
A hand stuck out from it. Overgrown and chipped fingernails reached towards me, the hand was trapped.
"Jordan..." A raspy voice whispered.
What the heck?! There was a dying person in the cell! I guess this place wasn't abandoned after all.
But wait...how does this person know my name?
I watched as the hand gripped weakly onto the cell bar, pulling the person behind it forward.
Blood shot blue-green eyes met mine. His chest-nut brown hair stuck out from the bars as the boy pressed his head against them. It was so dark, but I could recognize his face clearly.
Andor.
