- "i don't have a crush on her" Ashley said, "I'm not going to flirt with her" she said. Spoiler alert, Ashley did in fact end up crushing on Eliza, and yes, Ashley did try to flirt with Eliza (For the record, she failed miserably.)

-Ashley doesn't like the fact that summer getting Eliza's attention, and that no matter how hard she tries, Eliza never seems to notice that Ashley clearly has feeling for her.

-Ashley is jealous that Eliza is paying so much attention to someone who isn't worth her time. Why should Eliza even bother with someone who will never love her back, or even some else from a lower class who isn't worth her time.

-Ashley admits that she never thought about a serious relationship before her feelings for Eliza started to appear.

-Ashley is jealous and frustrated, she tries to ignore her feelings, and that's the reason she pretends to be in a relationship with Veruca. The relationship that Veruca and Ashley have is one sided, Ashley really doesn't care about  Veruca at all.

-it's painfully clear that Ashley is upset over the fact that Eliza continues to ignore her advances.
