48: I Will Find You

Note: I absolutely adored this request as it's based loosely on the film Your Name in terms of the body-swapping. If you've not seen Your Name don't worry, there's nothing in this oneshot that'll spoil the film. This oneshot starts from (y/n)'s POV, and with every  ———  that breaks up the story, the POV changes. EG it starts with (y/n), then goes to Shoto, then back to (y/n), then back to Shoto. It's only the POV that changes with every line. It may be a little confusing sometimes, it was a little difficult to write but Your Name is my all time favourite film, so I was determined to do this request justice!

I woke up yawning after a very weird sleep. Everything seemed blurred, and as I opened my eyes I panicked a little, seeing a room I was not used to. I sat up straight, looking around, the room being traditionally Japanese themed. "Huh?" I spoke aloud, only to hear a deep voice. That was when I realised my body felt a little different, and I looked down, almost feinting at what I saw. I was in a male body.

As fast as I could I stood and ran to a mirror in the room, gasping at my own reflection. Not only was I in a male body, but it was someone I recognised from the UA Sports Festival that was on last month, but I couldn't quite remember his name. I recognised his distinct hair, eyes and scar. I brought my hand up to touch the rough skin, but suddenly a voice made me jump violently. "Shoto? Are you awake?" A female voice shouted.

'Shoto, that's right,' I remembered. 'Todoroki, I think.'

"Shoto- oh, you are awake. Breakfast is ready," a female said, sliding open the door. She was mature but didn't look old enough to be this sixteen year olds mum.

"O-okay," I stuttered, the deep voice coming out. This was already one strange dream. It felt incredibly real, especially when I had to get changed, go to the toilet and wash up. I came out of the bathroom a blushing and stuttering mess, unable to believe what I had just seen. I now found myself on the way to the prestigious hero high school, and I was beginning to feel incredibly nervous. What the hell was going on? This was just a dream, so why did everything seem so real?

———

I shifted around in a bed I did not feel comfortable with. A small beeping woke me up, and next to me a digital alarm clock was ringing. I furrowed my eyebrows, then realising immediately that I was in a room I didn't recognise. I shut up the alarm before it irritated me too much, then swung my legs around, dangling them off of the edge of the uncomfortable mattress I was sleeping on.

My eyes widened however when I saw my legs, and realised they were very feminine and completely smooth. I panicked when I realised that I was in a girls body, and I almost had a heart attack when I looked down into the top to see a little bit of cleavage. "(y/n)?" An old sounding voice croaked. This had to be some kind of dream, some kind of very realistic dream.

The door to the room opened making me jump a little, and I saw an elderly woman standing there with a walking stick. She looked pale and sickly, as though she shouldn't be walking. "Are you okay?" She croaked.

'(y/n) has to be this dream girls name,' I thought, so I nodded. 'But who is she? Her grandmother?' "Should you- are you okay?" I asked, feeling a little stupid but also shocked at my higher-pitched voice.

"I'm feeling a little better today, I can walk around a little at least," the older lady said. 'So she shouldn't be walking,' I came to the conclusion mentally, standing and approaching her. Despite this being a dream everything still felt so unbelievably real.

———

The familiar beeping woke me up, and I opened my eyes to my familiar room. I sighed in relief, thinking about the stressful dream I had just had. A strange tired looking man kept on shouting at me for not being able to use the boys quirk properly, the lessons I was being put through were intense and being surrounded by heroes all the time was incredibly intimidating.

Instead of thinking about it for too long, I got up and went straight to grandma to see how she was. "Gran, how are you this morning?" I asked carefully as I walked into her room.

"Ah, you're a bit more normal this morning," she said me a lazy smile.

"'Normal'?" I questioned her word.

"Yesterday you seemed to have completely blanked on my medicines," she laughed heartily.

"I- huh?"

"Do you not remember? Yesterday morning you forgot what medicines you needed to give me, I had to point them out to you sweetie!" She said and my mouth hung open. How could I ever forget what medication to give gran, I've been treating her for three years now! "You then asked me for your directions to your school!"

"I did what? Are you sure that wasn't just a dream?" I asked carefully, readying one of her injections.

"Absolutely positive sweetie. Oh well, at least your back to normal now," she ruffled my hair. As soon as I had given the medication and served her some food, I headed back to my room to get ready. It was there that I saw one of my notebooks open on my desk, one I don't remember getting out. I went over to investigate and saw some writing that was not by me.

What a strange and intense day, dreaming about living someone else's life, especially someone who has it so much different to me. Maybe it's one of those moments where I have to open my eyes to see a broader picture. Still, learning to take care of an elderly relative has definitely widened my eyes. Learning how to use a water quirk felt bizarre, and attending a school that was much more relaxed in comparison to UA felt good in a strange way. As dreams go, this one was pretty interesting.

- Shoto

My eyes widened when I saw the name. 'Shoto'... I read it repeatedly, as well as the small written paragraph. 'No, no this has to be a mistake,' I thought repeatedly. How was something like this even possible? Was it someone's quirk? I guess in todays society that was always a reasonable explanation but... who? Who would do this, why and how? It's not as if he or I had any switching quirks, nor anyone I personally knew. Not only that, but why would I be switched with him when I don't even know him and had only seen him once on TV?

———

"Looks like you can use your quirk again Todoroki," Aizawa scoffed during heroics. I furrowed my eyebrows, unsure on what he meant. I turned to Midoriya, hoping he'd give me some kind of explanation.

"Yesterday you - er - couldn't seem to use your quirk. I thought it may of had something to do with the overuse of ice during the tournament, but that was weeks ago now so you should've recovered," Midoriya said and I looked at my right had.

"I couldn't use my ice?" I asked and he nodded. I furrowed my eyebrows.

"In fact you just seemed a bit different in general, dude," Kaminari said making me even more confused.

"How?" I asked. They explain to me that I had apparently gotten over-excited when I saw All Might yesterday, that I got lost on multiple occasions whilst walking around the school and that I bought ramen from Lunch Rush yesterday instead of soba because I claimed I didn't like it. The last one confused me the most. "I said I didn't like soba?" I double checked and the others nodded. I thought for a moment, remembering that it felt as though it was yesterday that I was in that girls body. It had felt so real, being her and living that life, was there a possibility that there was a switch?

After all, I had entered what felt like another life, a life I had no idea how to live. It sounded from the class that something similar had happened yesterday, but inside my body instead. Was someone's quirk making me switch lives with this random girl? I wasn't sure how, after all we had no connection whatsoever.

———

Three weeks had passed since the body swapping started. It was truly bizarre, I had no idea how it was working and neither did Shoto. Having to live in each others worlds every other day was nothing but tiring, especially when he attended such an intense hero school.

The second time we switched I left him a note in his room like he did at mine. From then on we both agreed through using these little notes that we would set rules and write reports about what had happened that day. I was worried about gran, so I had to leave him step by step instructions on what to do with her medication. Some part of me still thought this was all some kind of long and extravagant dream, but the realism of it was too much to ignore.

In a strange way, over the weeks, I had grown close to Shoto despite not actually meeting in person. I knew him though, personally, I knew how his life worked and I had now learnt how his quirk worked, although that was the hardest mountain to climb. I was now back in my own body and trying to do some research on what could cause this phenomena using the computers at school, but I came across nothing. Sighing, I rested my head in my arms unsure on what to do. Was this going to carry on forever? How were we going to make it stop?"

"Are you feeling okay today now (y/n)?" Kaede came over to ask.

"Huh? Yeah I'm fine, why?" 'What did that idiot do?!'

"Well yesterday morning you came in screaming thinking you had given your grandma an overdose-,"

"I WHAT?!" I shouted, standing up abruptly and scaring her a little. Immediately I ran from the school, ignoring the fact we were only halfway through the day, and ran all the way home. Scared out of my wits and unsure on why my gran hadn't mentioned it that morning, I burst through the door to see her sat in her chair, tv remote in hand.

"Oh? (y/n), what are you doing home early- why are you out of breath?" She questioned calmly. I almost keeled over due to the lack of oxygen.

"I-I- I almost overdosed you?!" I simply shouted in confusion. It surprised me however when she smiled and switched off the tv. "Gran, I-,"

"(y/n) sweetie, come here," she said, gesturing the sofa next to her. "I think I understand what's been happening, dear."

"What do you mean?"

"You're dreaming of someone else's life, aren't you?" She asked and my mouth dropped open in surprise.

"H-how did you know?" I asked and she smiled again.

"Because the same thing happened to me when I was about your age. I began dreaming of someone else's life, and it took me a while to notice but he was dreaming about mine to. We were switching bodies whenever we went to sleep in the evenings," she said.

"How- how does this happen?" I asked nervously.

"I'm unsure honey, I'm sorry."

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything. I let it happen and eventually it just stopped. Looking back at it now, I wish I could've found him and had the opportunity to speak to him. Whatever the connection was, it was something special and I let it slip through my fingertips. Don't forget his name (y/n). Remember him, and find him," she said sweetly, holding onto my hands tightly. I wanted to find him, more than anything, but we didn't have enough money to travel, we barely had enough to pay rent. "He seems like a charming boy judging by the times I've met him. And don't worry sweetie, he didn't overdose me. He was just slightly panicked is all."

"Thank god for that," I sighed, holding her hand tighter and she just chuckled.

———

I had to stifle a yawn as I flicked through books in Musutafu Grand Library, not really paying attention to what was on the pages anymore. I had spent about six hours on the computers there, trying to get any clues whatsoever as to what and why this phenomena was happening but I had no luck. I tried looking her up on social media, but with no avail, although judging by her home and lack of modern technology, it seemed as though she wasn't the richest of people.

I checked my watch and saw it was an hour until the hospital closed it's opening hours, so I packed up my things and headed out to see mum before the end of the day. As I walked I scrolled through the many open tabs I had, trying to find absolutely any information but with no avail. I left my phone unlocked for (y/n) to use whenever she wanted to, but instead I always found her leaving notes in my room. This made me wonder if she even knew how to use a smartphone, as she only had an old fashioned flip-phone.

"Hello mum," I greeted her when I finally reached her hospital room, half an hour before visiting hours ended.

"Shoto, I wasn't sure you were coming," she turned to me from her usual spot of looking out the window.

"Sorry, I was stuck doing research," I said, sitting down on the stool by her desk.

"You sure are working hard," she smiled proudly. I just nodded, unsure on whether or not to open up to her about what was happening or whether she'd just think I was crazy. "Honey, do you remember the conversation we had yesterday?"

I panicked a little. (y/n) hadn't even said that she visited mum when she wrote up her report I read through this morning. "Er- no, sorry mum, what were we talking about?"

Mum just smiled. "I think I know what's been happening," she said with a gentle smile. "Shoto, are you dreaming about someone? Living someone else's life?"

I froze on the spot, surprised she could tell. "I-I- yeah... how did you know?"

"We may have only just been reacquainted, but you are my son and I can tell when I am talking to him or not," she said. "Plus, I went through a similar thing when I was younger."

"You did? How? Is it a quirk?" I asked but she shrugged.

"I'm not sure what it was or how it happened, but I do remember it. He was a sweet boy, Tomohito, and sometimes I wonder how differently my life would've been had I attempted to look for him. He was the first man I truly loved," she said with a smile. "So who is it?"

"She's called (y/n) but... I have no idea where she lives. It's a small village with a small high school, that's about as much as I know," I admitted with a sigh.

"That's quite broad," mum laughed making me smile. "Make sure you find her Shoto. You'll regret it in the future if you don't."

I was surprised by her advice but agreed to it nonetheless. I decided to tell mum everything about the situation, what I had learnt about (y/n) and her family, her way of life and how different everything seemed. She listened intently, teasing me occasionally when I realised I was blushing whilst thinking about her. (y/n) and I had grown so close despite not having actually held a proper conversation.

———

I rubbed my eyes as I awoke, feeling the familiar rough scar over my left eye. 'I'm in Shoto's body now,' I observed, sitting up and analysing the room. I got up, going through my usual routine of putting his bedding away before checking the room for any notes he had left for me. I was nervous, thinking about Shoto having to give gran her medicine, but now that she knew of the situation she might be able to have a proper conversation with him about everything.

On his low desk I found a few notes, so went to inspect them. I was surprised when I saw a list and a few rough sketches of landmarks from the village, as well as seeing on his computer that he had been looking up various small towns in the Musutafu region. I flicked through them with a smile, taking in his determination to find me. Just as I was about to write down my towns name however, Fuyumi slid open my bedroom door and called me down for breakfast.

During the day I was distracted by the intensity of his life, thankful when UA was over and I could visit his mother which was one of my favourite things to do. "Hey mum," I said as I entered her hospital room. It felt nice being able to say that, as my own mother passed away when I was only four. It was now Shoto's mother I saw whenever I thought of the word 'mum'.

"Hello (y/n)," she said and I froze. 'She knew?' I turned awkwardly around, the blush on Shoto's face being enough to tell her that she had gotten it right. "Shoto told me everything last night," she added, seeing my confusion. I nodded in understanding, then sighing. I told her my side of the story, about how my grandma also knew of the phenomena and had experienced it herself. We spoke for the entirety of the evening about what was happening, and I blushed brightly when she told me that Shoto seemed incredibly keen to officially meet me.

I told her about the things I found in his room, then decided to give him a helping hand. I took a pen from his bag and wrote the name of my town on his forearm.

———

Walking home I looked at the result I ended up getting for her on the test test, her now jumping to the front of the class academically which apparently shocked many people. 'Was she dumb?' I thought to myself, entering the small house and seeing her gran sat in her normal seat, flicking through a crossword book. "How are you?" I asked her straight away, knowing from all of (y/n)'s notes that her grandma's health is the most important thing to her.

"I'm okay. You seem to have gotten used to what medication to give me, haven't you Shoto?" She said and I crumpled the piece of paper in my hand out of shock.

"E-er- what do you mean?" I asked nervously, knowing there was no point in lying. She may have been old and ill but nothing seemed to get past (y/n)'s gran.

"My granddaughter is probably living your life at the moment, is she not? And you're here, in her body," she said simply. It seems as though mum wasn't the only one who knew of this phenomena.

"Yes... yes you're right," I sighed, deciding to tell her everything from my side of the story, as well as about the fact I was trying desperately hard to find (y/n).

- Timeskip -

It was the next day and I was back in my own body brushing my teeth in my ensuite. It was then that I noticed something black on my arm. I looked down and my eyes widened when I saw the name of a town. (y/n) must've written it on there yesterday. Immediately I ran to my laptop, searching for the town and seeing it was a five hour train ride away from here. Instead of changing into UA's uniform I dressed into casual clothes, picking up all the notes she had left me around the room, grabbing my bag and running out the front door, ignoring Fuyumi's shouts.

I ran straight to the station, adrenaline filling me at the thought of being able to finally see the girl I had unwillingly fallen for. I boarded the train immediately, ignoring the texts from my friends asking where I was and just focussing on getting to her town. I wasn't entirely sure what I was meant to do when I got there, I wasn't entirely sure how she'd react to seeing me but I knew I had to do this.

The train ride felt longer than five hours. I fell asleep multiple times and just asked Midoriya to cover for me when he asked why I wasn't in school. I didn't want to attempt to explain the fact I was going to see a girl I had never met before yet fallen in love with, and had lived her life every other day for the past month. I found myself tapping my feet impatiently, shuffling around in anticipation and checking my watch every five minutes.

Finally after what felt like too long, the train pulled up into the empty and run-down looking station of her town. I practically bolted off of the train, through the station and out the other side to the familiar looking town. As quickly as I could I ran, then realising I had no idea where I was going. I looked around, searching for anything that was vaguely familiar.

———

"I don't suppose I did anything strange at school yesterday?" I decided to ask Kaede as we walked home together, and she just laughed.

"For once, no. Although everyone does wonder how you managed to do so well on that science exam when you couldn't answer a single question right today. You didn't cheat, did you?" She asked and a small part of me panicked. 'Shit, he took that test and is way cleverer than me... am I going to get accused of cheating?'

"Of course I didn't cheat! Maybe I was just having a good day," I laughed.

———

Finally I found my way onto a familiar street, it being on the usual route home (y/n) took from school. I ran as quick as I could to her house, knocking loudly on the door when I arrived, not really thinking straight. As soon as I finished knocking, a sense of dread filled me as I had no idea what I was going to say or how she was going to react.

"H-hello?" A croaky voice said as it opened the door. I saw gran, using up all her energy to just stand up.

"Gran! It's me, Shoto," I told her quickly, taking ahold of her and making sure she didn't fall.

"Shoto? As in the Shoto (y/n) has been seeing?" She asked and I nodded. "You've come to find her! How sweet," she smiled and I blushed a little. I helped her back into her chair, making sure she was alright and healthy. "I'm fine, don't fuss. She'll be walking home form school around about now... I'm sure she'll be more than happy to see you."

"Thanks gran," I said, quickly leaving, my adrenaline building up again as I ran in the direction of the school.

———

"Bye Kaede!" I called as she walked down her street towards her house. I still had another ten minute walk so carried on straight, my mind wandering to none other that Shoto. I often found myself thinking of his handsome face, the kind notes he'd leave for me, his deep and bewitching voice... I couldn't get him out of my head. I wanted to try and get a job in this small town so I could eventually build up enough money to travel to his hometown but it was difficult, what with having to look after gran too.

Suddenly from nearby I heard loud and quick footsteps, and I looked across the road, almost having a heart attack at what I saw. Shoto was there, actually there, running down the street at top speed. He seemed to completely miss me, focussed in the direction he was going, but I was frozen on the spot out of complete surprise. Suddenly my body acted before my brain could, and I ran after the boy who had come to mean more to me than anything in the world, besides gran.

———

I was running as fast as I could, desperate to get to the school and see her face to face. I wasn't even thinking about how she would react anymore, running purely on my selfish need to see her and hold her, hoping she'd want to hold me too. I ran in the direction of the school, only paying attention to my destination as opposed to my surroundings.

———

He was fast but I was desperate to catch up with him, to see him face to face for the first time. My heart was beating rapidly as I turned a corner and saw him halfway up the street. Before I could stop myself I shouted out his name loudly. "Shoto!"

———

I stopped so quickly at the sound of my name coming from the familiar voice that I almost fell over. I gulped, my heart beating wildly as I turned slowly. I almost couldn't believe when I saw her at the other end of the street in the recognisable school uniform, her (h/c) hair blowing in the wind. My voice was lodged in my throat, the two of us standing still and just staring at each other.

Before either of us knew what we were doing, we were running as fast as we could up to each other, as though magnets were drawing us together. I had waited for this moment for so long and I couldn't believe that it was finally here, that I was seeing the girl I love running up to me with as much desperation as I was using running up to her.

———

He was running towards me, fast, and I couldn't hold back the happy tears any longer. We crashed into each other, our arms wrapping around each others bodies in a tight embrace, tears falling from my eyes at record speed. His familiar scent felt homely, and feeling my arms actually wrapped around his physic just made me smile uncontrollably.

———

I felt myself begin to cry a little as I held onto her as tightly as I could, borderline refusing to let go. She was finally here, I was finally able to hold her. Feeling her arms wrapped just as tightly around me made almost too happy. Gently I lifted my head away from where it was buried in her shoulder, so I could look into her sparkling (e/c) eyes.

———

The look he was giving me was one I had wished he'd give me for a while now. One that radiated love and passion. My heart was beating wildly as I soaked in his handsome features: his heterochromatic eyes, his scar, his red and white hair. It almost didn't feel real, but his hold on me told me that it was.

———

"(y/n)," I said softly, brushing my hand through her hair.

———

"Shoto," I acknowledged, bursting with pure happiness.
