45: The Intern Part One

Warning! This oneshot is part one of two. There's also a small age gap between Todoroki and (y/n), but (y/n) will be in third year at UA so she's 18.

Note: There's a villain in this story that goes under the name of Mutilator. His quirk is the ability to control the movement of ones body after digesting their blood, so a similar kind of concept to Stain's quirk. Mutilator's quirk works better on women then men, as he can control a woman for up to eight minutes, but a man only up to five.

Quirk: Shadow Control

- Todoroki's POV -

I was sat in my office, going through her UA profile, admiring the things she had achieved during her time there. I leaned back in my chair, staring at her photo, admittedly quite bewitched by her looks. I had trouble keeping my eyes off of her picture, but suddenly the buzz on my office phone sounded. "Yeah?" I answered after pressing the button.

"Pro Hero Deku is here to see you sir," my secretary said.

"Alright, send him in," I said, hanging up. Seconds later Deku, the now number two Pro Hero despite us being only twenty-four, walked in with his classic beaming smile. "Hey," I greeted my best friend with a smile.

"Hey," he said, making his way towards my desk. "Police have finished questioning Mutilator."

"Good," was all I said, still staring at the screen.

"It freaks me out how much he reminds me of Stain," Deku said but I didn't respond, simply hypnotised by this girl. "Shoto?" Deku questioned, walking round my desk to see her profile. "You're not serious are you? I've told you so many times before, you can't recruit her just because you're attracted to her!"

"That's not the reason, she's a perfectly capable student, she won the Sports Festival in her first year-,"

"That may be but I know you're really recruiting her because you fancy her," Deku said, folding his arms. I simply rolled my eyes.

"No, I'm trying to give her a chance, she'll make an excellent pro. She's got a lot of skill, Deku," I said in a matter-of-fact tone.

"Well if you do recruit her, you can't date her," he said. There was a slight pause between us.

"Why?"

"Why? Well for starters she's still a student, and secondly you'll be working alongside her, it'd be totally inappropriate."

"What about you and Uraraka?" I asked, raising my eyebrow.

"That's different! We're not in the same agency, and she's our age," he enforced.

"It's only six years difference!" I said, but he raised his eyebrows. There was silence between us again, thoughts about whether he was right were running through my mind. After looking at her profile one last time however, I decided he was wrong. "I'm sorry Deku, I'm going to send her an offer. Even if I can't date her, she deserves a chance to be recruited, and my agency is in the top ten. She'll get good experience here, and I'll treat her well," I stated confidently.

"Sounds like there's no changing your mind," Deku sighed and I nodded. "Just don't let your feelings get in the way of your work, alright?"

"I'm sure it's just a little crush, I'll get over it," I lied, but he seemed to believe me as he nodded.

"Well I just came over to tell you about Mutilator. See you later," he said, waving as he exited my office.

"Bye," I called after him. Looking back at my computer screen, I formed an email to my old headmaster, and sent off my offer.

- (y/n)'s POV -

Snipe, our homeroom teacher, had just finished explaining all about the internships and offers we were due to receive from Pro Hero agencies. He told us that despite not all of us receiving offers, we were all going to go on at least a week long internship, those of us who received and offer from an agency would then maybe be asked by the hero to work for them, so this coming week was going to be a huge deal.

He handed the people without offers a list of lowly rated agencies, then handing the rest of us personalised sheets of paper each, listed with the offers we received. I almost squealed in the middle of class when I saw, halfway down my list, that Pro Hero Shoto had sent me an offer.

"That's so unfair!" My best friend, Kurahashi whined when she saw my list after class. "He's the most popularly rated hero! He's so hot!"

"I didn't even get any offers," Nakamura, my other close friend, moaned. "Are you going to accept it?"

"I-I dunno, I'm not sure I'm good enough...

"Are you kidding? If he sent you an offer then he himself obviously thinks you're good enough. Ugh, I'm so jealous you were acknowledged by the hottest hero around!" Kurahashi whined even more. I thought deeply, seriously considering his agency.

"You know what? Screw it, I'm gonna do it," I said, writing his agency down on the form.

"You're going to have to tell us everything," Nakamura said, nudging my arm suggestively. I rolled my eyes, but had to admit that I was incredibly excited about working with such an amazing hero, and I also had to admit that he was incredibly handsome. This factor, along with him being the former Number One Pro Hero's son, put immense pressure on me as the class gathered at the nearest train station to UA, each of us wearing our uniform and clutching onto the trunk that contained our hero suit. Snipe was at the front of the group, going over some last minute rules and regulations. As we all had our hero licenses we would be able to help out with battling any villains should it come to it, but he mainly told us about how we had to obey the heroes we were interning with.

Saying a goodbye to the girls, I walked in the opposite direction to most of the class, boarding a train towards the Shoto Agency. My heart started to beat faster, nerves travelling through my body at lightening speed. I tried to contain my breathing as I exited the train and approached the agency building, which was admittedly smaller then I expected. I entered through the glass revolving doors and found myself in a lobby, a reception desk in front of me, lifts and stairs to my right and what looked like a waiting area to my left, there being sofas, coffee tables and potted plants. Lurking around that area were women with microphones and men with large cameras, and I could tell immediately they were paparazzi.

Trying to ignore them, I approached the desk, the lady behind it putting down her phone and wearing a kind smile as I approached. "You must be (y/n) (l/n) from UA, judging by your uniform," she said and I nodded. "I'll contact Mr Shoto for you."

As soon as she said his name I got goosebumps. There was a sudden tap on my shoulder, however turning round was a mistake. There in front of me was a woman from the waiting area, a man with a camera behind her. "UA student (y/n) (l/n) right? From class 3-A? Are you interning here? Tell us, what's it like interning with the highest rated hero in the popularity polls? Have you attended any serious crime scenes with him? What's Shoto like behind closed doors?"

All of these questions being piled on at me at once threw me completely, and all I could do was stutter, trying to avoid eye contact with her or the camera. "Please leave my intern alone, she's only just started today. I'm afraid that's all I have to say at this current time. Thank you," the deep voice of Shoto Todoroki said. The three of us turned and saw him standing there, tall and broad, his hands in his hero suit pockets. I whimpered slightly, staring at him. "Here, let me take that," he said directly to me, taking my hero costume trunk from me. I simply let him, and without another word he gestured me to follow him and we walked towards the lifts.

"Don't worry about them they're here all the time. Pleasure to meet you, (l/n)," he said, holding out his hand for me to shake.

"You too sir, and thank you so much for the offer, I promise you won't regret it," I replied, shaking his hand politely and bowing.

"Please, no need to be so formal. Shoto is just fine. The reason I picked you was because your quirk fascinated me most. You seem very skilled," He said, the lift doors opening to a floor with another lobby, this one quite small. There was a man sat at a desk in the middle of it, in front of a large glass door which was covered with a blind.

"T-thank you," I stuttered and he opened the glass door after nodding to the man at the desk, leading to a large, incredibly traditional Japanese style room. Bonsai plants littered the edges, and there was an intricately carved wooden desk in the middle. He handed me a pair of slippers to wear which I quickly changed into, then walking into the room further realising the floor was padded also.

"That was Sugino by the way, he's my secretary. So, first things first. If you get changed into your hero suit in there," he said, gesturing another door off of his office, "then you can tell me more about your quirk, and I'll tell you about my work and what we do here. Sound good?" He asked and I nodded, doing as I was told. Once I emerged, I saw Shoto sat at his desk and glance over to me, doing a double take. I wasn't sure if it was my imagination, but I thought his stare lingered a little longer then it should've. He suddenly coughed, and softened his gaze. "So..." he seemed a little nervous, making me feel slightly self conscious. I was never sure about my suit, as it was black and skin tight. "How does your quirk work?"

After explaining my quirk and my hero suit, we spent the whole afternoon going through the roles and importance of being a hero. He showed me around his agency, and everyone I met seemed lovely and was incredibly kind towards me. As the day went on, Shoto and I seemed to get closer, laughing together and by the end of the day we were talking like friends to each other. My cheeks always felt warm when I was around him, particularly when he got physically close or whenever he laughed and smiled.

The day went by too quickly, and before I knew it it was time for me to head home. I thanked him again for allowing me into his agency, to which he replied "There's no need to thank me, you earned this position."

He saw me out, waving to me as I walked down the street, heading back to UA and to the dorms. A smile never left my face, my heartbeat wouldn't calm down as my amazing day played in my head on repeat. Once back in the dorms I was immediately pounced on by Kurahashi and Nakamura, both demanding to know exactly how my day was. After giving them all the details, I decided to go to sleep early that night so I could wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to train. Just before I left the agency, Shoto told me that we'd be going on patrol so getting plenty of rest was important. As I drifted off to sleep, I found that my last thoughts were on the incredibly handsome hero who I still couldn't believe had hired me for an internship.

- Timeskip -

Confidently I walked into Shoto's agency wearing my hero costume and approached the front desk. The lady from yesterday greeted me and told me to head straight up, and when I reached Shoto's office lobby, Sugino said a happy hello.

Suddenly something made both Sugino and I jump out of our skins. "WHAT?" A shout that sounded like Shoto came from inside the office. Carefully I approached the door, opening it timidly and I froze at the sight before me. Standing there in front of his desk was the number two Pro Hero, Deku. Shoto was standing up with his hands on his desk, wearing an unapproachable angry face. I gulped as Shoto made eye contact with me over Deku's shoulder, but thankfully his face softened almost as soon as he saw me. "Hi (y/n)," he said, his tone completely different from that which was sounded only seconds ago. He even smiled towards me.

Deku turned around, sending me a polite smile also which made me go weak at the knees. "Hi, pleasure to meet you, I'm Deku," he said, holding out his hand for me to shake. I approached him carefully and took his hand.

"H-hi, I'm (y/n)," I mumbled timidly.

"Shoto's told me all about you," Deku said in a slightly teasing voice, turning round to Shoto who sent him a scowl. "Sorry about this (y/n), I just had to deliver some... bad news to Shoto. I'll - er - get out of your hair. Call me later," he added, and Shoto nodded.

"See you later Deku," he said as Deku walked out of the office.

"Is - er - everything okay?" I asked nervously.

"It's... not really. Sit down, I need to tell you something," he said, gesturing one of the sofas in the room. We got comfortable and he started explaining something to me, something that made me go pale. A villain under the name of Mutilator escaped from police custody just that morning, after months of effort from Shoto, Deku and a number of other heroes who caught him and brought him in. Mutilator had killed more then fifty citizens, either skinning their bodies and handing them in random alleyways throughout the city, or draining their blood and leaving them on the doorstep of their families. Mutilator had also started going after heroes too, already killing five and seriously injuring another six.

"Oh my god... I-I think I've heard about him," I whispered, shaking.

"Now he's escaped he's probably more dangerous then he was. I felt like I had to tell you... we're going to have to look for him, (y/n)," Shoto said deeply and my heart missed a beat. We were both silent for a second, but I accepted this factor as being a hero meant saving people from bad guys.

"Okay, I'll help. It's what a hero does after all," I said, wearing a determined smile. He nodded, smiling too.

"Thanks (y/n), you've managed to calm me down a little," he said softly.

"R-really? I-I didn't even do anything," I stuttered, blushing. He looked down towards my hands that were in my lap, shaking his head slightly.

"Trust me, you did more then you know. You're presence is enough," he said quietly, and my eyes widened in shock. "I'm afraid we're going to have to jump straight into action. We'll have to head to the police station in order to get details first," he added and I nodded, hanging onto his every word. Shoto's driver took us all the way to the police station, and as we entered the hectic building filled with officers running around trying to work out how the villain escaped, I realised the severity of the situation. "You okay (y/n)?" He whispered to me, nudging my arm.

"I-I think so... it's just kind of hitting me how real this situation is," I admitted.

"Listen, you don't have to be a part of this, I can have you taken back to the agency if you want... I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you got hurt, so perhaps that'd be best-,"

"No, Shoto, it's okay. I want to do everything I can to help," I said with a reassuring smile. It made me happy to see how much he seemed to care for me, and together we walked to find the chief of police. He and Shoto spoke for what felt like a very long time, and I waited behind him listening to every word intently. I felt completely overwhelmed as a number of other heroes came in, learning about the situation and figuring out how to handle it, Deku also coming in and greeting me quickly before joining the rest of them.

Once everyone was brought up to speed, Shoto relayed the information back to me. "So, because this villain has been ranked as Class S, it's not safe for any one person to look for him. Heroes will be patrolling in groups of three, that means it'll be you, me and Deku," he informed me.

"But I'm not a hero yet," I said nervously but he smirked at me.

"I believe you are," he said confidently and I smiled brightly. I got lost in his eyes, before realising he too was staring right back at me.

"Ahem," Deku's voice suddenly sounded. We both broke our trance and looked over towards him. He seemed to be staring at Shoto with an arched eyebrow, Shoto looking away from the pair of us awkwardly. "We've been told to take the east side of the city, we'll be patrolling every night from eight until midnight, unless of course he's caught elsewhere and backup is needed there," he said, and both Shoto and I nodded.

"You won't be able to get back on UA campus that late, perhaps you ought to stay with me this week," Shoto said to me, and I blushed darker then I had before.

"Huh?" Both Deku and I said at the same time.

"Er, Shoto, can I talk to you a moment?" Deku asked, taking him away from me as he began talking to him in the corner of the room. Awkwardly I stood alone, a few people glancing over to me curiously. Subtly I tried glancing over to them, and I saw Deku rubbing this temples whilst Shoto was talking. I managed to hear a little bit of their conversation as I carefully stepped closer, being as discreet as possible. "Shoto, what the hell are you thinking?"

"I have to keep her safe," Shoto said.

"This is next level though, how are you supposed to get over it if she's staying with you?" Deku asked. I wondered what he meant by 'get over it', and furrowed my eyebrows, even more curious.

"It'll be fine Deku, I swear-,"

"It won't! It's so inappropriate! You're feelings are just going to get stronger-,"

"Keep it down!" Shoto hissed. 'Feelings?' I thought to myself, my heart stopping. "I'm just trying to keep her safe, that's all," Shoto said sternly.

"Fine," Deku said after a pause. I stepped away from them and missed the last part of their conversation, but they soon approached me, both smiling awkwardly. It was incredibly difficult going the rest of the day without letting on that I had heard parts of their conversation, and I was busy debating in my mind if what I heard was even what I was even what I was thinking. It couldn't be, why would Shoto Todoroki, popular Pro Hero, be interested in me who's just a simple intern who he met yesterday?

I tried my hardest to forget about what had been said, and tried to distract myself with preparing for the evening patrol. Shoto was kind to me all day, giving me words of encouragement however my cheeks had a habit of reddening quite quickly, my mind wandering to places it shouldn't. He couldn't like me, it was impossible... wasn't it?

The evening patrol approached, and Deku came over to the agency. "Are you ready (y/n)?" He asked me as he came in.

"I-I think so," I mumbled.

"I've been meaning to ask, do you have a hero name?"

"Oh yeah, it's Night Witch," I said and he smiled, nodding.

"You'll do great, Night Witch," he said. As soon as Shoto came out of his office, we set off towards the East side of the city, me trying to mentally and physically prepare myself for what might happen. Deku walked in front whilst Shoto and I tailed behind; I didn't want to read too much into it but it seemed as though Deku was trying to give us some alone time.

"Shoto, I've been meaning to ask... what do we do if we run into another villain, a villain that's not Mutilator?"

"Then we'll capture them. Yeah we're looking for Mutilator but if we come across any low-life thugs then we'll get them too, any chance to rid the streets of idiots and villains like them," he said, looking at me with a small smile. I stared into his hypnotic eyes, appreciating his good looks more and more with every glance at him. I tried to shake myself out of it, knowing I needed to focus on patrolling. Hours ticked away and there was no sign of Mutilator, and no one had beeped through on the radio saying that they had caught sight of him. It was a quiet night, with no other villains or thugs to apprehend. I was quite relieved we didn't come across Mutilator, although I did understand the fact that the quicker we found him, the quicker he'd be off the street and away from harming anyone.

"Well, that's our patrol over. Mt Lady has just beeped in saying her group is taking over in the Eastern sector, so we're done for the night," Deku said.

"Looks like it's time to head home. (y/n), you still alright staying at mine?" Shoto asked. I saw Deku send Shoto a glance with one raised eyebrow, but Shoto ignored him.

"Y-yeah of course," I mumbled timidly. Shoto phoned his driver to pick us all up, us dropping Deku off first before heading to his.

"Goodnight (y/n)," Deku had said as he got out the car. "Hope you sleep well at Shoto's." 'What did he mean by that?'

"Y-yeah, goodnight," I mumbled awkwardly back. Once we reached Shoto's, I appreciated the fact that he didn't have an obnoxiously large house, just a simple two story traditional Japanese house. It did still look quite expensive, however, as he let me in and handed me a pair of slippers. "Wow, nice place you have here," I complimented as I walked further into the house.

"Thanks, it can get a little lonely sometimes," he said without looking at me. I couldn't help but stare at him, my heart rate excelling. "So, I'll get you a spare change of clothes and you can stay in the spare bedroom, is that alright?"

"Perfect, thank you," I smiled and I actually saw him blush. He quickly ran upstairs to fetch some clothes whilst I attempted to get my head around what was happening. As he was gone I explored the house, ending up in the comfortable looking lounge and sitting myself down on one of the sofas. Minutes later he came in, holding out a comfy looking top and lounging trousers. He himself had changed into a similar attire, and I couldn't help but stare at his biceps that were usually covered by his hero suit.

"You're room is the first door on the left as you walk up the stairs if you wanna get changed. I'll make us some noodles," he said and I nodded, leaving the lounge and heading for my designated room. I changed as quickly as I could, desperate to spend more time with him and hoping maybe we could get even closer then we already were, now that we weren't working.

"Mm, it smells delicious," I said as I made my way towards the kitchen.

"I'm not much of a cook but I hope it's alright," he said, serving it into bowls. I sat down on one of the stools that surrounded the island as he turned around, but at the sight of me he froze.

"Are you okay?" I asked, feeling a little self conscious as he stared.

"Y-yeah, fine," he mumbled, breaking eye contact and placing the bowl in front of me. I thought I saw a slight blush on his cheeks, but I wondered whether I was just reading too much into it as his earlier conversation with Deku kept playing on repeat inside my head. He sat on the stool opposite me, and quietly we began eating. I felt a bit of awkwardness build up before he thankfully broke the silence. "So how did you find your first patrol?"

"It was okay, I can't lie though, I was incredibly nervous," I admitted.

"You have nothing to worry about, I wouldn't let anything happen to you," he mumbled before slurping up some noodles.

"T-thanks," I couldn't think of any other way to respond. He sent me a sweet smile which I returned. "Oh, and thanks for letting me stay here tonight.

"No need to thank me, I thought here would be the safest place for you," he said sweetly. I thought back to the fact that the UA dorms were incredibly safe also, but I just couldn't help but be happy he invited me over. "Well, I think I'm going to head to bed," he added, finishing his noodles.

"Right, yeah, I'm right behind you," I agreed, putting my bowl next to the sink. We both walked upstairs and stopped outside the spare room. We were standing incredibly close and my heart was beating unbelievably fast as I looked into his heterochromatic eyes that were also boring into (e/c) ones. I saw his adams apple move slightly, and my chest started to rise and fall quicker as my breathing quickened.

"Well... goodnight," he whispered in a husky voice.

"Yeah... goodnight," I responded. We still remained standing close. After a moment or two however he suddenly shook his head and stepped backwards, making me feel a little disheartened.

"R-right, see you in the morning," he said rather quickly before walking towards his bedroom. I watched him go and when he was out of sight I entered my room, unable to comprehend the moment we just shared. I couldn't help but lean against my closed door and slowly slide down it, curling into a ball as my feelings for the male suddenly peaked. I seriously hoped that after what had just happened, that tomorrow wouldn't be awkward between us.
