20: Partners or Rivals?
2K read special! Thanks so much guys, it really means a lot to me that you're all reading and enjoying this oneshot collection.
Quirk: Fairy
It was our first major event of being at UA, playing Heroes and Villains. If you were the villain, your goal was to guard the fake nuke that the teachers had hidden in a building, and if you were the heroes your goal was to either detain the 'villains' or touch the fake nuke to claim it. I pulled my role from a bucket and found I was going to be a hero, then I pulled out a name and found I was partnered with Todoroki. I looked over to the quiet boy, skeptical, as he had not said much to anyone since being here. He got in on recommendations though, so I knew he must be good.
"Hi! Looks like we're partnered together... although our turn isn't until a while... fancy coming up with a strategy?" I said, trying to be nice but he simply looked at me with no emotion whatsoever.
"I already have a plan."
"Oh, then perhaps you'd like to share it?" I asked.
"No, it's simple and only involves me. You can just follow," he said and I huffed.
"Well then, I'm so glad I was partnered with you," I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes and walking over to the screens to watch the others to see how they got on. I glanced back at my teammate to catch him looking at me, but I snapped my head back, annoyed at his arrogance. Once the first couple of teams were done it was our turn, and we were up against 'villains' Hagakure and Ojiro. We approached the building in silence, the only noise coming from my fluttering wings.
"Just stay back," he said in a deep tone, and I scoffed and rolled my eyes, my arms folded. He stepped his foot in the doorway and ice immediately erupted from it, freezing all the walls both interior and exterior. It went freezing in a matter of seconds, and I began to shiver. "Stay here, you won't be able to deal with the cold," he said, almost bragging, as he walked into the building, however I was too stubborn to leave it at that. I flew straight in, following the footsteps Todoroki took and I tried my best to ignore the pain in my delicate wings from the cold. I saw him and flew quickly past him, into the room with the nuke in to find Hagakure and Ojiro trapped in Todoroki's ice. He could've done it on his own, but I was not going to let him have the pleasure. I flew over the two 'villains', sprinkling my fairy dust on them which made them drowsy and landed elegantly on top of the bomb, wearing a smirk as I looked down at the ice boy.
"Time to get rid of all this ice don't you think? Thanks for trapping them for me," I said cheekily and I noticed him grit his teeth slightly as he melted all the ice. Since that day, we had never truly voiced it but we were each others rivals. Ochaco would get sick of hearing me complain about how uptight and arrogant he is, to the point where she'd just nod and not listen at all. "It's the way he thinks he knows everything, I mean yeah he has a powerful quirk but look at Midoriya! He's got a powerful quirk and he's not got his head shoved up his own arse!" I cried out and Ochaco looked at me, shocked. "Just because I'm a fairy I have to be polite? No. Fuck him, just... UGH!"
"I know you really dislike him but please calm down, your dust is sprinkling off of you again," she said, pointing out all the dust coming from my skin. It often happened whenever I let my emotions take over.
"Oh, right, sorry," I said, brushing it all off and flying over to join her on her living room sofa.
"Are you sure you really dislike him?" Ochaco suddenly said, looking up at me.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, a lot of the time people say they don't like someone, when actually they like them romantically-,"
"Ochaco, no! Yeah he may be handsome but have you not been listening to me for the past hour! He's way too arrogant, just because his fathers famous and he's got a ridiculous quirk he thinks he's mister big-shot, no I don't think of him romantically. I'm much more attracted to a kinder and much more down to Earth person, like Kirishima," I said.
"Okay, that's fair enough, sorry for bringing it up," she said, rubbing the back of her head.
"It's alright. Anyway, how's life between you and 'Deku'," I teased her, and we spent the rest of the night giggling and gossiping.

The time of the UA Sports Festival came and I had been training all year for this one competition, I was going to win and wipe the floor with that straight faced double quirked boy. The whole Hero Course were in one room dedicated to us, and I was chatting with the girls, as we were all wishing each other good luck. I noticed that Bakugou, Kirishima and Kaminari stood close by, and I smiled thinking about how I'd found Kirishima quite cute recently, so Ochaco told me to go over to them. "Good luck today guys," I said with a sweet smile, mainly directed at Kirishima.
"Pfft, I don't need any good luck," Bakugou said, puffing out his chest.
"Thanks, (y/n), you too!" Kirishima said with a nice smile. Why couldn't Todoroki just be nice like him? An announcement sounded telling all of us to get to the field ready for our briefing on the first event. I caught a glimpse at Todoroki who annoyingly glanced at me at the same time. I stood far away from him, waiting for Midnight to start talking. She explained the point system, the whole obstacle race but didn't tell us what to expect on the course. There were so many more people then I expected and the starting line was hectic, but luckily as soon as Midnight began the race I flew high up into the air to avoid all the mayhem. Immediately I sped but saved my energy for the last leg of the race. The first obstacle was the incredibly large robots from the entrance exam. Many people below began pounding at them, attacking them in order to get through. A sudden shot of ice almost caught me but I flew away just in time to see Todoroki skate over the robots. "Watch yourself," he said, and I stomped my foot mid air. I tried to fly high but one of the robots arms just fell off, so I had to fly through which was difficult as there was a lot of dust from people using their quirks and messing up the ground down below, as well as from the robots stumbling around due to everyones attacks. Sheets of metal were falling and I knew if my wings got caught in that then that'd be game over for me.
I decided to fly through as quickly as I could, keeping my senses desperately alert until I was through safely. I sighed in relief, but spotted that there were a number of students ahead of me so I flew quickly to catch up with them. The next obstacle gave me a strong advantage. In front of me there was a large crowd of confused students as they looked over a giant canyon which was littered with platforms, ropes attaching them to each other. The idea would be to climb the ropes, however I was able to fly straight across it leaving everyone behind, although there were a few students still ahead of me, including Todoroki. "I will beat him," I told myself. I flew over the course, continuing until I reached the next obstacle which also played to my advantage. A minefield. I smiled to myself, it was almost as if they wanted me to win. I flew across however got caught in the pink smoke of one of the mines a student below me had set off. That was something I'd have to dodge. People were triggering them left right and centre which made it difficult to dodge, but still it was an easy obstacle for me. I saw Todoroki ahead and he looked back, his teeth gritted as he saw how much I had gained on him.
Ahead of me also was Bakugou, who seemed to be battling it out with Todoroki. I flew as fast as I could, sprinkling some of my fairy dust subtly on the other students below to tire them out a little. The ending flags were in sight, and Todoroki, Bakugou and I were so close to the finish line. Suddenly, on a metal plate flying past me, Midoriya came out of nowhere and over took all three of us, flying through the air. With a last bit of strength, I flew fast, and Todoroki and Bakugou ran fast in order to try and overtake him. Stretching my arms out in front of me, I managed to cross the finish line, making the audience cheer loudly as they witnessed it on the giant screens inside the stadium. Immediately I fell to the ground, only know realising how much weight I put on my wings. I tumbled and rolled on the ground, my wings dropping from them being overworked. Overworking my wings also affected my muscles, so I was having difficulty standing up. That was until Midoriya held out his hand, smiling down at me.
"Well done, that was incredible! You really showed us up," he said with a smile.
"T-thanks, Midoriya," I said, reaching out for his hand, grasping onto it and pulling myself up. He gently tucked his arm under my aching wings and helped me into the stadium where everyone began cheering my name, making me blush insanely. Out the corner of my eye I spotted Todoroki, and he simply stared at me before walking off of the field and into the stadium. Luckily we were having a break now as the first challenge was intensive, and I couldn't help but feel warm inside knowing that I had beaten my rival.
"Are you alright now?" Midoriya asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah I think so," I said with a smile. Most of the class came over to congratulate me as well, making me feel warm inside. I definitely needed water and time to rest before the next challenge, and luckily we had half an hour so I went inside towards the vending machine and got some water and an energy bar. On the way back to the stairs leading to the stand I overheard a conversation, and could pick out Todoroki's voice. I stopped and crept up to the corner, peeking around subtly to see him stood in front of Midoriya.
"In every memory of my mother, I only hear her crying. I remember she called my left side unbearable," Todoroki said, his voice cracking in the middle. My eyebrows knitted, my heart pounding as I listened intently. "Before she poured boiling water on my face." My stomach dropped out of pure shock, my eyes widening further then they ever had before. "I'm going to show my damn old man that I don't need to use his fire to become a hero... I'm going to show him that I reject his power, and I can take first place without using it. I will defeat you, only using my right side... my mothers side."
Immediately I felt like a complete and utter idiot, he had already dealt with enough in his own home, why did I have to add to that? From what he said, it sounded as though his father was incredibly tough on him making Todoroki resent him, and his mother was the cause of his scar. He didn't need a rival, what he needed was a friend, whether he realised it or not. Perhaps his arrogance has settled down a bit, but I never even gave him a chance to prove himself... I knew now that I needed to be the big person and apologise, but would he accept that? We've been nothing but rivals, getting angry at each other, I didn't know if a simple apology would be enough to fix everything between us. All I knew is that the boy was more vulnerable then I expected him to be, especially with a past like that, and I felt so guilty that I needed to apologise him, and I needed to suggest us building a friendship as apposed to constantly trying to one up each other.
I walked away from the conversation and waited in the tunnel leading through to the stadium, guilt piling up on my shoulders. He'd have to pass me eventually, so I raked my brains, thinking of what I could say and how I could start, but nothing was coming to mind. Unfortunately the next event started and I still hadn't seen him to talk to. My team ended up being built of Midoriya and Ochaco at the rear, Tokoyami at the front with Dark Shadow as protection, and me on top. We had an awful lot of points as a team, with me coming first and Midoriya ending up fourth, so we strategised to defend more then attack, however I knew that both Bakugou's team and Todoroki's team were both going to target us. Annoyingly however, I didn't really see Todoroki as a rival anymore, but he was ignorant to that factor.
The game began and I was right, most of the teams went for us, but luckily thanks to my flying quirk I was able to dodge everyone with ease, even when Iida sprinted Todoroki's team towards us. Time was slowly running out and we looked to be doing okay, as a lot of 1-B seemed to be distracting those with lower points, as their tactics were to get as many of the lower points as points as possible so it soon added up. I flew up high and managed to dodge Bakugou's pissed off hand, and the buzzer sounded signalling a minute left. Suddenly I felt cold and my wings began to burn in agony, and I felt myself falling. I screamed out in pain, as the cold began to seriously injure my wings. The weight of whatever was dragging me down made it feel like my wings were being ripped from my back. Hot blood poured from my back, from where my wings grew. I looked behind me and found them encased in my block of ice and I began to panic, as this could cause serious and permanent damage to them. I was screaming and crying, falling fast. I almost passed out from the pain, everything was blurry and I hadn't realised it but my headband had been taken. I landed on the rest of my team before I blacked out from the pain.

I woke up in a white room on a soft bed, laying on my front. Recovery Girl was next to me, with various ointments laid out on the table beside the bed. "W-what happened to me?" I mumbled.
"You're wings received an incredible shock, and the ice that shocked them almost caused permanent damage. I've managed to heal the skin around your wings, they were almost completely ripped off of your back. You're very lucky I was on site, otherwise you may have lost your wings. These competitions can be dangerous if you're quirk is powerful but delicate, so please be careful in future," she said.
"I-I will, thanks Recovery Girl," I mumbled, trying to ignore the harsh pain that still lingered in my back.
"If there's any problem, please tug on this cord. I have other things I need to deal with at this moment," she said, walking out towards the door. My eyes followed her as she left and my heart stopped when I saw who was standing in the door. Todoroki looked on, his face straight as always, however he shifted his weight slightly when I stared over at him. I tried to sit up but he rushed in and stopped me.
"Don't, you don't want to damage them further," he said simply, and I laid back down again. There was an awkward silence between us.
"I think I'm okay to sit, Todoroki, it's just if I lay on them," I said reassuringly as I sat up, wincing at the pain. He opened his arms as if he was going to help me, but stopped.
"I-I'm sorry," he said quietly. I gazed at him, both surprised at his stutter and at the fact he actually apologised.
"That was going to be my line," I mumbled.
"What? Why?"
"I feel as though I never even took a chance to get to know you... I feel as though I may have judged you too quickly, so I'm sorry. I'm sure you're a really nice person once you open up a little bit, and I'd love it if we could get to know each other. I feel like a prick for everything and how I've acted towards you since we've met, so I wanted to say sorry and propose we call a truce for this stupid rivalry we have going on... I think I'd much rather be friends," I said honestly. He simply stared at me, surprised.
"What about what I did to your wings? You could've lost them because of me!" He exclaimed, dumbfounded.
"Well if you apologise for that and promise to never do it again then I'll let it slide," I smiled cheekily.
"I am sorry for it... that's why I came here... the competition was messing with my mind too much, and I guess I was just annoyed as my old man was watching," he mumbled, not looking at me. Him ignorant to the fact I overheard his and Midoriya's conversation, I reached out and took his hand comfortingly. He looked up at me, completely bewildered by my action, and I noticed a slight pink tint on his cheeks.
"You'll show that prick that you can be strong with your ice side. You took me down, after all," I smiled, trying to build up his confidence. He apparently wasn't the arrogant boy I took him to be, and behind his stoic appearance there was a vulnerable boy.
"T-thanks," he stuttered, and I pulled my hand away. "But I am still seriously sorry about that... I didn't realise how sensitive they were," he mumbled, and I just shrugged my shoulders. "The next event is one on one battles, and the names have already been pulled. You're up against Tokoyami, will you be alright?"
"Oh please, I'll be fine, I won the first challenge, didn't I?" I smirked.
"And the second," he said.
"Wait... really? But you took my headband!"
"Well Tokoyami managed to pull enough of my headbands from my neck to get you in the lead by a couple hundred points," he smiled. I had never seen him smile before and... I liked it.
"Wow... well I guess I better get ready for the next round," I said, going to stand up.
"Are you sure you're ready?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I smiled confidently, fluttering my wings slightly. I held out my hand for him to shake to seal our truce, which he took. We held onto each other for a little longer then one usually would, before pulling away quickly and looking away from one another. "I - er - ought to go get prepared... good luck," I mumbled, walking out of the recovery room, unwillingly flustered.
Todoroki got through his first round against Sero with ease, and soon enough it was my turn against Tokoyami. I was in the tunnel, breathing deeply when Todoroki came over to me. "Have you seen what they've done to the floor?" He asked when he approached me. I shook my head and he pointed behind towards the filed, where I saw large slightly transparent holographic walls surrounding the field. "For your flying," he pointed out, which made me laugh. "Good luck," he said, not looking at me but looking straight ahead with his stoic expression. I smiled, confidence building inside of me as I went out onto the pitch for my battle with Tokoyami.
Now having Todoroki's support managed to fill me with newly found confidence, so with my fists clenched I entered the ring and waited for Midnights signal. Dark Shadow was already protruding out of Tokoyami, and as soon as the gun was shot signalling the start, I flew up high, Dark Shadow close on my tail. I tried to create as much fairy dust as I could to knock out Tokoyami, but with Dark Shadow being so vicious it was very difficult. Luckily my agility meant that I could dodge him easily, and I managed to get some dust to land on Tokoyami. He stumbled a bit and Dark Shadow paused for a moment, so I took this opportunity to fly up high and try to create more fairy dust and have it sprinkling from my entire body. Suddenly Dark Shadow hit me square in the stomach but I was able to control myself easily, regaining balance, and Dark Shadow was now covered in the dust.
Unfortunately, however, it didn't work on Dark Shadow, and he had created a large barrier between me and Tokoyami, so it would be difficult to get to him. It was then that Dark Shadow became extremely vicious, and he took one of my legs in his beak, and pulled me harshly to the ground, my wings not strong enough to break out of his hold. I was pulled straight to the ground, my breath completely knocked out of me as I hit the floor. I tried to wriggle free but his grip was strong, and he began thrashing me about angrily, pulling me by my ankles and slamming me down to the ground. My already injured wings began to sear with pain, and I couldn't help but let out a shriek, the agony running through my body. I felt blood seeping from the wounds again. I tried to get up, and fluttered my wings, despite the pain. I looked up into the stands and saw Todoroki leaning over the barrier, watching intently, and a warm feeling filled my stomach, this feeling giving me strength. I flew back up however Dark Shadow overpowered me once again, encasing my entire body, thrashing me around again and actually throwing me out of the ring. I landed in a heap outside the lines.
"(l/n) is out of bounds! Tokoyami is the winner!" Midnight called and the crowd cheered. I slowly got to my feet, humiliated at how badly I had done, especially compared to the other two rounds. I scrambled to my feet, fluttering my wings slightly, and walked off of the field, hiding my face from the embarrassment.
"(y/n)," Todoroki called out to me. I turned but refused to look into his eye. "You did good out there."
"Oh please, I was beat in a matter of minutes-,"
"Tokoyami is a difficult person to beat... with a bit more training, you could definitely get there," he said softly, and I looked up into his eyes, surprised.
"W-wow, thanks," I said, surprised at his compliment. "Well done on your victory, you annihilated Sero."
"Thanks," he murmured.
"Good luck in your next round... I'll be cheering for you," I said quietly. I saw him smile again, which made me smile. It's fair to say that today, our relationship changed dramatically in that one day.
