Survival
-Japan, 1990-
When the first recorded appearances of so-called "Quirks" emerged, the world, at first, was speechless. How could a person be born or have gained a real supernatural ability? But soon, as the decades went by, more and more people developed their own quirks, to the point where the world's population is now 80/20, with the former all having some sort of power, and the latter being dubbed "Quirkless," or having no power at all. And with the appearance of literal superpowers, came the emergence of superheroes and supervillains.
The heroes would do battle with these villains, fighting for the side of hope, freedom, and justice; ensuring a safe world for all to live in. On the side of villainy, these evil-doers fought for destruction, pain, and suffering, aiming to topple the world and gain control. And with so many villains to fight in the world, the heroes began to get overwhelmed by their numbers. So, to ensure there would always be a suitable number of heroes each generation to stand against the villains, governments from around the world created the hero school system. These high schools would teach students, who were the best of the best, how to become proper heroes. They'd learn to fight, think, and act like heroes until they were called into action. For decades, this system remained the same. And to this day, it still does.
-Musutafu, Japan-
Despite 80% of the population now having quirks, the world quickly became adjusted to these conditions. The extraordinary became the new ordinary. People would now look to the sky, occasionally seeing a hero fly overhead, but reacting as if it was something you'd normally see each and every day. In this day and age, becoming a hero was one of the only ways to have a successful career, but despite most having quirks, a good chunk of those with them wound up having less than useless abilities, such as having a horn grow out of the side of your head, or expanding eyeballs. So even when they're superpowered, most of society still went about as if quirks were never there, having normal lives and jobs.
"Look, I'm about 10 minutes out, I won't be late for the meeting, got it?" A business man said into the block that was his mobile phone, fresh off the assembly line. He walked down a sidewalk that was filled to the brim with passersby, and as he went to continue his conversation, he suddenly bumped into someone and the two fell over. "Oh, sorry about that."
"No, no, it's my fault. I wasn't looking where I was going." A girl said as the two helped each other up. The girl was maybe no older than 15, medium length and slightly messy brown hair which touched her shoulders, blue eyes, a black hoodie, black slightly ripped jeans, and brown boots. "Here, I think this is yours, right?"
The girl handed the man his chunky phone and he gladly took it and saw his call didn't end when he dropped it. He gave her a smile and a thumbs up before passing her to continue to his destination. Little did he know, this girl, when she'd bumped into him, had swiped his wallet from one of his pockets. She quickly made her way to a nearby alleyway, ducking behind a dumpster to see what she'd scored.
"Alright, let's see here..... Driver's license, useless...... Health Card, useless..... Where's the money pouch in this thing, it's got so many zipp-AHA! Bingo!" The girl said as she took out a small handful of bills. All in all, she took about 10,000 Yen from the wallet, or about 87 US dollars. Not a bad steal. She then dumped the wallet by tossing it over to where the sidewalk was and walked deeper into the alley, taking some corners to avoid being seen.
The girl's name was Tensho Fuyumi. She has no home, no friends, and no family left who'll take her in. She was a loner, and by now, she was perfectly fine with that. After having received the shaft so many times, she believed the only person she could trust was herself.
Fuyumi's life truly began with the emergence of her own quirk. Like most children, her quirk developed at the age of 4, but it came with some horrific side-effects. Her family attempted to tolerate her quirk for some time, but, once Fuyumi turned 8, they'd had enough and disowned her, deeming her quirk as 'Too villainous and frightening.' And over the next 7 years, Fuyumi would do all she could to survive. Besides observing school teachings from windows, she picked up useful skills such as sleight-of-hand, which came to be extremely helpful once she began her life as a pickpocket for a gang she'd joined.
However, after being caught by the police, she traded her would be time in Juvi for information on her gang which lead them all to being placed in jail, and her walking free. Not too long after, Fuyumi had been discovered by a Yakuza crime boss, claiming he was the leader of a rising group known as the Shie Hassaikai. But after her previous outing with her gang, Fuyumi declined his offer to join them, slowly acquiring her lone wolf status and trusting only in herself.
But despite turning to her newfound life of crime, deep down, her true dream, since she was just a child, was to be a hero. She wanted to be a person who could protect those who could not protect themselves. A person who could save the world, a person who could uphold a true code of honor and justice. But that day, when her family got rid of her and told her that her quirk was villainous, Fuyumi's dream shattered. Now whenever she sees a hero, she's reminded of that day, bringing back her most harshest of memories. And she hated it.
Everywhere she went, she'd see something hero related, whether it be merch, a commercial, or even a hero themselves. Her life was a constant reminder of what she'd been told, and she was nearing her tipping point. Even now, she contemplated on the thought of becoming what her parents had called her all those years ago; a villain. But she never came to that decision, and instead would keep on going with the life she has now, rather than potentially putting herself in a situation where she'd be in even more serious trouble than she already was in each day.
"Sun's starting to set. Better head back before it gets too cold out." Fuyumi said to herself after looking over to the sun, descending behind some mountains in the distance. So she called it a day and went to where she called home for the time being; an electrical supply room underneath a bridge. While it wasn't the most spacious, or even safe for that matter, given there were wires right above her head which controlled portions of the railway on the bridge above her, she didn't quite care. The electric currents produced heat which would keep her warm every night, so the risk was well worth it. She huddled up and settled in for the night, happy with what she was able to acquire today. Tomorrow, she'd be able to eat.
"....help.....! Someone, help me!! PLEASE, I NEED HELP!!!" Someone suddenly began screaming as Fuyumi woke from her brief sleep. She poked her head out of the supply room, seeing the sun had fully set now, leaving the sky mostly dark now. However, she was still able to see who was doing all the shouting. It was a little girl, maybe no older than 7, short blonde hair, green eyes, and a school uniform on. She was the one screaming for help. And as she ran across from where Fuyumi was, going under the bridge, Fuyumi panned her head to the left and saw a car in hot pursuit of this little girl. It quickly pulled up next to her and someone inside quickly snatched the little girl and pulled her inside before the car peeled out.
Fuyumi didn't have any words, or even reacted to what she just witnessed. She'd never seen an actual kidnapping before, but she didn't really care. It was none of her business what happens to that girl, right? And yet, she started to feel a heavy pounding in her chest. As if her heart was telling her to do something. Fuyumi thought of that little girl, the terrified expression on her face, the helplessness of her situation. It actually reminded Fuyumi of herself when her family disowned her. And despite it not being in her nature, Fuyumi still believed that no one should have to go through what she did. So, a decision was made, and Fuyumi came out of her temporary home and activated her quirk to give chase.
"Damn it's cold out tonight. Come on, ya damn things, grow!" Fuyumi shouted in frustration as her arms slowly began to morph into red dragon-like wings. The cold was a huge draw back of her quirk though, as it slows or even weakens the process of her transformations. Still,. after a minute, her arms had fully morphed and Fuyumi quickly flapped her wings and began to rise into the air. Soon enough, she took flight and began heading in the direction the car went. Her memory was quite keen, so she remembered the model and even the license plate of the car easily. And after a few minutes of flying around, she spotted the car. It was motoring down a highway but soon pulled off an exit towards the docks. Fuyumi followed from high above and watched 4 armed men exit the vehicle, one of them carrying the little girl who was previously taken.
"Let's see what's going on here." Fuyumi said as she began to descend, just as she saw the men take the girl into a warehouse. Fuyumi quickly but quietly landed on a catwalk along the side of the building and peered inside some windows to see what was going on inside. She could see even more men on the inside, all of them either armed with a fire arm or having some sort of quirk, like a body made of rocks. The little girl had been tied to a chair and gagged and was being approached by who Fuyumi believed was the leader of this group of kidnappers.
"It's about time you guys caught her! Geez, she's a child, how hard can it be!?" The leader berated the others who looked a little ticked to hear their boss say this.
"Give us a break boss, we ambushed her transport this afternoon but she slipped away when we took out her chauffer. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find and chase a kid of this size, wearing the most generic school uniform out there, through a large city? It ain't easy, so cut us some damn slack!" One of the kidnappers replied as their leader just rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Okay, enough. I get it. Now go get the tub ready, alright? I've got business with our little guest." The leader ordered as some of his men went into another room. "Well now that you're here, little girl, i'm sure you're wondering what we're gonna do with you, right? Well, we've been keeping our eye on you and your family for quite a while, and we know your daddy's an owner of one of the top companies in the city. I'm sure he'd do anything to have his precious daughter back safely, right? So, we're just gonna take a simple ransom video with you, send it to your father, along with our demands, he'll send us what we want, and we'll let you go, sound good?"
The little girl was so terrified that she couldn't even nod or shake her head. The leader just assumed she understood his explanation and fetched a camera. He handed it off to one of his goons and they began to make the video. Fuyumi watched it all from the catwalk until they were done. She watched as the leader received a call on his own brick of a mobile phone. She assumed it was the little girls father, sending the money to the kidnappers. However, once the call was finished and the leader hung up, something Fuyumi didn't expect happened.
"Alright, he's sent the cash. Now get rid of the girl. Her new shoes ready yet?" The leader asked as one of the goons gave him a nod.
"Yes, sir, the cement's ready to go." The goon replied which made the little girl freak out a bit, hearing that she was about to be dunked in a tub of cement.
"Perfect. After all, you've seen our faces, right? Even if you're young, i'm sure you can give a good enough description of how we look, so we're not taking any chances. Hope you can hold your breath for a while kiddo, you're gonna need every second you can get in mere moments. Take her away, boys." The leader ordered as the girl was quickly untied from her chair before being dragged away to where their tub of cement was. Fuyumi saw them take the girl outside and she dropped down from the catwalk, heading to the corner of the building to get a closer look. These guys had set of their tub at the edge of one of the docks, and once the cement had hardened around the little girls feet, they'd toss her in the water and watch her drown.
"Stop squirming, no one's comin' to save ya, girly!" One of the goons said as they lifted the little girl off the ground and prepared to dunk her legs into the cold, wet cement. However, just before they could, something flew into view and struck the goon holding the girl right in the head, knocking him out with one shot.
"What the hell was that?" Another goon said as he quickly pulled out his firearm and began looking around for whoever threw what they identified as a brick. Unbeknownst to them all, it was Fuyumi who'd thrown it, thankful she managed to hit the guy she was aiming for.
"Alright, well that's one. Only, like, half a dozen more to go. Yeah..... should be easy..... if I knew what I was doing...." Fuyumi said to herself, trying to boost her confidence even though she didn't really have any right now. Not when she was up against 6 or 7 people with guns and quirks of their own. But since they knew she was somewhere around them, she figured it was time to crank up the damage.
Activating her quirk once more, this time, she morphed the shape of her head. It became a dragon-like head, minus her hair which remained the same. Red scales grew all around her neck upwards, and her teeth sharpened into fangs. And, from deep within her throat, a fire brewed as she came around the corner and, with a mighty roar, she unleashed a wicked fireball which was aimed right at the grouping of goons.
"Oh shit, look out!" A goon screamed but the attack was so fast, none of them could react in time. The fireball struck the ground in between where they all stood, which erupted in an explosion which sent them all flying. Luckily for Fuyumi, the little girl was safe from the blast as she had hid behind a crate after she'd been dropped. Fuyumi, now having an opening, quickly ran over to where the little girl was.
"Hey, kid, don't worry, i'm here to get ya out of here, alright!?" Fuyumi said but the girl looked so afraid, she didn't move at all. Fuyumi looked to the goons and saw them start to get up, meaning she was running out of time. She had to act fast or risk being overwhelmed by them, or worse, killed. "Screw it, we're leaving now. Hang on, kid, or else i'll drop you, got it!?"
With that, Fuyumi turned her arms into wings once more, and even morphed her legs this time. From the waste down, they turned draconic like everything else before, red scales growing from her skin, and her feet becoming razor sharp talons. Fuyumi quickly flapped her wings and hovered in the air, then carefully grabbed the girl by her shoulders, being careful not to hurt her with her talons, and then took off with the little girl into the skies.
"Shit, she's taking off with the girl! Shoot 'em down!" A goon yelled as any of them with guns started to open fire. Fuyumi took evasive actions to avoid the gun fire, and the night sky aided in concealing her with help from her already dark clothing.
"Put me down, i'm afraid of heights! I wanna go home!" The little girl suddenly started screaming as she was struggling in Fuyumi's grip.
"Hey, stop or else you'll slip out of my talons! Do you want to fall to your death? Don't think so, so please, try and stay still, and do not look down!" Fuyumi ordered as they couldn't hear the gunfire anymore. They were too far out of range for them to be tracked as well.
"Where are you taking me?" The little girl asked.
"Well, you wanted to go home, right? So where do you live?" Fuyumi asked as the little girl began to look around, scanning the buildings they were flying over to determine what direction her home was in.
"I think I live over there!" The little girl said, pointing West. Fuyumi soon turned them in that direction, but their now peaceful flight was cut short when the gun fire continued once more.
"Damn it, how can they be shooting at us!? We're like a mile away already!" Fuyumi questioned as she looked back, seeing only one person pursuing them. It was the leader of the gang of kidnappers, and he had a quirk that let him fly as well. From his back, two literal rockets were coming out of his skin, and the propulsion from them were making him catch up, and fast.
"I believe you have something that belongs to me, girl! Give the kid back to me or i'll end both of your lives here and now!" The leader said as he took aim with his fire arm.
"I may be no hero, but i'm sure as hell not letting you kill this little girl! Hang on, kid, it's about to get rough!" Fuyumi said as she suddenly went into a dive, the little girl screaming the whole way down. The leader soon followed, trying to readjust his aim to hit them.
"No one runs from me, girl. Now..... die." The leader said as he pulled the trigger and fired a bullet at Fuyumi. She heard his gun fire and quickly did a roll to avoid the shot. She heard it whiz past them as she leveled out and went around a building. "Playing hard to get, eh? Alright, i'll play your game."
Fuyumi flew around several buildings, hoping her winding path would eventually lose the leader. And, after a short while, it appeared it did. Exhausted from all the flying, Fuyumi stopped in midair to catch her breath.
"How're you doing down there, kid?" Fuyumi asked as the little girl was grasping Fuyumi's scaly legs for dear life. She looked mortified from all the flying they were doing hundreds of feet above the ground, let alone the maniac trying to kill them as well. "Hey, don't worry, we lost that guy, so now I can take you ho-"
Fuyumi suddenly felt an immense stinging sensation in one of her wings as she let out an ear deafening scream. She'd been shot. And with one of her wings injured, she was starting to struggle to stay in the air.
"Play time's over, girl. You lose." The leader said as Fuyumi saw him fly into view. She hadn't lost him after all. He made it appear so, and Fuyumi dropped her guard. "Now, as I said before, die!"
The leader shot at Fuyumi two more times, and both times she was struck. Once in her lower right chest area, and the second in her left thigh area. She screamed some more as she and the little girl were dropping to the ground fast. With so much pain coursing through her body, Fuyumi could no longer keep them in the air, and they went into a full descent. They quickly approached the ground but, just before they hit it, Fuyumi morphed her wings and talons back into her normal arms and legs, flipped herself over so her back was to the ground, and held the little girl tight to her chest. Fuyumi hit the ground hard, her whole body feeling the impact and shock the moment she landed. To her surprise, she could still move which meant her spine didn't break, but after being shot three times and hitting the ground so hard, she was in no condition to do anything now. But thankfully, her actions saved the little girl as she seemed okay in her clutches.
"Aw, how cute. Honestly, i'm surprised you both survived that fall. You're tough, girl, i'll give ya that. But your luck's run out." The leader suddenly said as he landed in front of Fuyumi and the little girl, who Fuyumi grasped and turned her head away.
"It'll be okay, kid, just don't look." Fuyumi said as she waited for everything to end. But, as the leader took aim to shoot both of them, two spotlights suddenly turned on and lit up the leader.
"What now!?" The leader questioned as, from behind Fuyumi and the little girl, a canine-like creature leaped over them and tackled the leader to the ground. It howled before ripping into him with sharp claws. The leader was the one screaming now as the creature took his gun away with its jaws and crushed it to pieces with a single bite. It then delivered one last punch to the leaders face and knocked him out cold. It let out another howl to the moon as Fuyumi finally got a good look at the thing. This furry dog-like creature before her was both half man, half canine; a werewolf. And it stood up and looked at Fuyumi and the little girl.
"Are you two okay?" A man's voiced as them as it came from the werewolf.
"Yeah.... yeah, we're good..... just..... a little tired..... that's all....." Fuyumi told him as she suddenly blacked out from blood loss.
-Some Time Later-
Fuyumi slowly began to wake. Her body felt weak, and her vision was incredibly hazy. She could tell it was the next day as it was light out, but she didn't know where she was.
"Ah, good, i'm so glad you're able to wake up. I was beginning to worry you weren't going to make it." A man's voice said, but Fuyumi couldn't yet tell who was speaking to her.
"Who.... said that....?" She questioned as she rubbed her eyes a bit. They then began to adjust and focus, allowing her to see she was in some sort of infirmary. She looked to her right and saw a well- built man sitting next to the bed she was in. This man had brown eyes and short grayish black hair, putting him maybe..... mid-late 40's? He was wearing a brown suit with a white undershirt, a navy blue tie, brown dress pants, and black dress shoes.
"That was a mighty rough fall you took last night. We were amazed to see you were able to keep moving afterwards. You're lucky there was still staff around at that time, otherwise, we might not've been there to save you." The man explained as Fuyumi sat up and shook her head a bit. Her body was still in pain, but it wasn't quite as severe. She looked to the places where she'd been shot, and saw scars where the bullets had penetrated her body. Someone had healed her wounds!
"Who are you? And where the hell am I?" Fuyumi asked, glaring at the man.
"My apologies, miss. You're in the infirmary wing at U.A High. And my name is Yatsuhashi Doma. I am the principal of this school." The man told her.
"Must be a pretty wealthy school if you can afford an infirmary this big." Fuyumi replied, looking around the room to see it held well over 3 dozens beds for anyone injured.
"Well, when you're one of the top hero schools in the world, it's easy to afford it. But let's talk about you, miss." Doma said as a word he said caught the attention of Fuyumi.
"Did you say 'hero?'" She asked as Doma gave her a nod.
"That's right. U.A High school, ground zero for hero education in Japan. We've popped out some of the top heroes in the world, from the likes of All Might to Mastermind. It's our duty here to train the next generation to become heroes, so when the pros step down, they can take their place in the spotlight." He explained to her as she grew curious.
"So then why am I here?" Fuyumi asked.
"Well, the teacher who saved you examined your wounds after you fainted. You would not have made it to the nearest hospital, so he brought you here. However, after what he told me, I grew curious of your actions. And after a look into your history, miss, it appears you've got quite the tale to tell. Now why would someone like you, a run-of-the-mill hoodlum, risk your life to save a little girl?" Doma asked as Fuyumi came to the realization that she didn't know where the girl was now.
"Wait, that girl, what happened to her!? Is she safe?" Fuyumi asked as Doma chuckled a bit.
"Relax, she's fine. Her parents picked her up earlier. And despite the fact you hadn't woken yet, that girl still thanked you for saving her life. Which brings me back to my question. Why did you choose to save her?" Doma repeated as Fuyumi laid her head back into her pillow and sighed.
"Because she needed help, and I was the only person who could give it to her. I felt like..... that I couldn't live with myself if I just let her be taken, even if I didn't know what would've happened to her. It.... it reminded me of myself. She was alone and afraid, just like how I am now. Despite how I appear, I wouldn't want anyone to share that feeling. It hurts more than anything else." Fuyumi explained as Doma shook his head and cleared his throat.
"I see. Now, what if I told you I had the power to fix all that?" He told hehr as Fuyumi's eyes lit up with a spark of hope for a moment.
"What did you say?" She asked him.
"Very recently, a student in one of our first year classes seriously injured one of our teachers and rendered him in a coma. That student has since been expelled from U.A, and that's left one free spot in that class for a new student. Now, normally, we'd go through trials of determining if a student from one of our other courses such as general studies, support, or even business should claim that spot in the hero course, however, after hearing about your actions last night, you've more than proved you have what it takes to enter this school." Doma explained as Fuyumi was trying to register everything she was just told.
"So.... you're telling me.... you want me to enroll into this hero high school?" She questioned as Doma gave her another nod.
"That's correct. However, as we're already finished the first semester, you'll be leagues behind everyone else in your class. This means you'll have to work twice as hard to catch up, understand? But what you'll gain from this, it'll more than make up for all the hardships you'll have to overcome. Proper hero training, education, as well as making friends and family; that is what you will gain by enrolling in this school. And, I can even offer you a place to stay here until you graduate. So, Tensho Fuyumi, I offer you this: You can accept my proposal and enroll into U.A and learn to become a hero? Or, you can return to the life you currently have now, a good-for-nothing hoodlum who's just asking for trouble. It's your choice." Doma stated as Fuyumi went deep into thought about what she should do.
She thought long and hard, the words of her parents echoing through her head about how villainous her quirk is. It had haunted her for her entire life since she was disowned by them. But this could potentially be her chance to rid those words from her memories once and for all.
"Would you really accept someone like me.... someone whose quirk has been stated to be 'too villainous?'" Fuyumi asked as she was extra curious as to what Doma would say now.
"Fuyumi, no quirk is truly villainous. Quirks do not depict who we are, it is how we use them, how we act that shows people who we are. You are the only person who knows who and what you are, Fuyumi. Do not let what others have said choose what you are for you. You decide how to shape your life. You tell others what you stand for." Doma told her as, from within Fuyumi, a heavy weight was lifted off her. Her mind was clearing from the harsh words her parents had told her all those years ago. For once, she felt free.
"Sir, i'll..... i'll...... I ACCEPT!!" Fuyumi declared with a roar full of confidence. Doma could do nothing but smile at her answer.
"Then it's settled! You begin tomorrow when the sports festival begins! I'll fill out all the paperwork and show you to your living quarters later. For now, get some rest. You won't exactly have time to meet your new classmates in an actual class just yet, so be prepared to meet them through combat." Doma explained as he got up from his seat and was heading for the exit.
"Wait, sports festival!? Hold on, can't you set something up so I can at least learn about my classmates ahead of time!?" Fuyumi shouted to him as he opened the door to leave.
"Nope! They don't know about you or your quirk, and you know nothing of them so it's all fair! Now then, I have a schedule to keep so I must be going! Oh, and welcome to U.A High, Miss Fuyumi!" Doma cheerfully said as he closed the door, leaving Fuyumi alone to rest. She was a bit baffled though. Her dream which had shattered so many years ago had literally pieced itself back together and was happening right now. But already, she'd being thrown from the frying pan and into a literal fire. Guess Doma wasn't joking when he said she'd have to work twice as hard as everyone else. But even so, she could not be more thankful for all this. A chance to turn her life around and star anew. This was a once in a life time chance. and Fuyumi wasn't going to let it go to waste.
Just wanna take a brief moment and say, this story was long in the making, over a month in planning, plus a few extra weeks to make OC's, even have some art done for down the road, it's my most difficult and, literally, expensive story to date. And I was certainly not on this alone, I had plenty of help so i'd just like to say thank you, ahead of time, to those who gave me assistance and where you can find them.
