As winter break rolled around, most students were packing up for the holidays, the excitement flourishing throughout the decorated corridors was infectious to the point that even Tokoyami had been caught smiling a few times, most excitingly one of those smile was elicited from joke you told.
This small interaction between you both was enough to fuel your courage. You put the memory on repeat as if to convince yourself he did enjoy being around you as you stood nervously before his dorm room door.
The slight tremor that kept your arms from staying steady get like you were practically vibrating. A withered groan pulled out from your nose, your hand forcing itself up to meet the door in a brazen knock.
There was a slight shuffling and thump within the room, but it was clear he swiftly approached the other side of the door. The tremors in your body suddenly got so bad your quirk activated, sucking the present into an open portal beneath your hands, shooting it down into a deep darkness with a ripped pattern along the sides of box from your digging nails.
A horrified expression lit ablaze across your face as you only stared down at the present floating about farther and farther away. The purple and blue wisps around the portal quickly sewed themselves back together, pulling the edges of reality closed again.
The door clicked open and hesitantly opened, Tokoyami poking his head around the door until it swung open more confidently at the sight of you. "Oh, hello L/n."
You, who was still staring where the gift just disappeared into, suddenly snapped your now owlish eyes up back up to meet Tokoyami, who was slowly catching onto your odd energy.
"Uh.." You shook your head a little as a bright smile cracked across your face, dropping your arms from their stiff position of holding the now self sabotaged gift. "Hi Tokoyami." Your shaken vibe was soon cleaned away as you recollected yourself.
He cocked his head to the side. "What brings you here?"
A warmth stared to crawl up your neck. "Oh well, I just wanted to hang out a little before you left for home." Your eyes drifted past him to a half packed suitcase on his floor, shirts and cloaks strewn about his room haphazardly. The e/c eyes flit back to the bird. "Unless you're busy, Of course!"
He hummed to himself. "I certainly don't mind the company."
Dark shadow suddenly flew into view, smiling wildly at you. "Hello Y/n!!" He cried, nudging you with his head.
A laugh erupted from your chest at the clear horror painting itself across Tokoyami's face as the affectionate shadow shamelessly rubbed against you.
"Hurry up, Y/n! Get in here!" The shadow cheered, wrapping around your back and guiding you quickly into Tokoyami's room, nearly shoving you straight into your friend if he didn't dodge at the last second.
The embarrassment radiating from him was palpable as he raised his voice. "Wh—?! Dark Shadow! Contain yourself!" He scolded hurriedly as his throat tightened. He must have gotten a tighter control on his quirk because shadow swiftly, yet reluctantly, pulled away from you. "I-I'm so sorry, L/n. This won't happen again!"
You chuckled and plopped yourself on his bed. "Didn't you say that last time?" The playfulness you had about the situation always flustered Tokoyami to no end.
"Well I mean it this time." He claimed, sending an annoyed glare at Dark Shadow.
The shadow being shrunk under the scrutiny before turning his big eyes towards you. You laughed before cooing at the shadow. "Aww, it's okay Tokoyami, I really don't mind." You flopped back onto his bed. "It's nice, I don't get hugs too often anyway."
He tutted at you as he kneeled to the ground amongst his messy packing process. "You encouraging him isn't helpful L/n."
There was a loose comic book next to your head that you curiously picked up, flipping through the pages. "Well, he's a part of you right? Maybe you shouldn't try to suppress him all the time. It might not be healthy for you." You mused, turning back to the first page of the strange comic.
There was a noticeable silence that followed your words, it was enough to start to make you feel embarrassed as the familiar tremor raked through your arms. Was that the best thing to say?
You buried your nose a bit further into the vampire comic.
"So, what're you hoping for during break?" You asked, greedily grasping at a different topic.
Tokoyami hummed thoughtfully, stopping momentarily in packing his suitcase. "... I'm not completely sure. But I know I want to rest as much as I'll be allowed."
"Ooh, that's what I'm looking forward to the most too." You rolled onto your stomach, putting the comic to the side as you began to work up your courage again. "But, like, in gift terms. What are you hoping for?" You probed.
He turning his head towards you, curiosity and confusion fighting for dominance over his expression. "I don't know. I'll probably be okay with anything I might get... why?"
A smile lit across your face as the tremors worsened. Just keep it together, he likes you, you are his friend, he laughed at your joke. "Well, because it so happens that I have something here for you!" You flicked your wrist, opening one of many pocket dimensions you were connected to.
Tokoyami's eyes widened slightly as his voice became flustered. "Oh! L/n, you didn't have to do that."
"Psh! Sure I did!" You shoved your arm deep in the pocket. "Ah geez, hang on." You put your upper body through the pockets opening, rummaging through some other things floating about until you came upon the present. "Ah!" You eagerly grabbed it and slipped out of the dimension.
"Here you go!" You cheered, handing him the messily wrapped present. The nerves attacked your entire body as he stared at it for a few seconds.
He seemed almost timid to grab it, but did and sat cross legged on the floor in front of you. "Thank you, L/n." He gingerly tore apart the paper and lifted open the lid on the box.
His eyes stared down at the fabric nestled perfectly in the box between his legs. He looked up to you again, surprised.
"Go on!" You urged with a wide, encouraging grin.
He looked down to the gift once more before pulling out a soft, breathable cloak that wrapped thickly around the neck. The underside was coloured a deep, wine red as the outside was a dark, inky black that seemed to suck away any light that landed on it.
He rubbed the material between his fingers in awe.
You scooted forwards on the bed, your legs off the side in front of him as you awaited excitedly for his opinion on it. "It's reversible too! I-I went to the support course and they were nice enough to teach me how to work with the material! Mai owed me a favour anyways."
His eyes enlarged as his stare turned to you, gawking. "You... sewed this?"
An immediate spell of insecurity wracked through you. "Oh!- don't worry! We tested it and the none of the seems are going anywhere! It's fireproof on both sides too so if you're in a tough situation you can just duck inside. Dark Shadow will have a nice space to stay shaded!"
He stayed silent as he stared at you, the fabric bunching into his clenched fists. After a few moments of silence you eyed his form quickly then offered an awkward grin.
His feathers abruptly puffed up. "L/n... I-I don't know what to say." He broke eye contact to inspect the cloak again.
"Well... Do you like it?" You asked, your hands locking and twisting into each other timidly.
He brought his head up to meet your eyes in surprise. "Of course! It's an incredibly thoughtful gift." The cloak spread across his lap as he smoothed it under his palm. "I love it. Truly."
A relieved grin burst across your face, beaming down on him. "Well go ahead! Try it on!" You cheered as your cheeks burned in a bashful glow.
He chuckled softly to himself as he stood from the ground. In a graceful flourish, he wrapped the cloak over his shoulders, fiddling with the clasps in the front.
You clapped your hands together in front of your face. "Oh! It looks so good! And I know it'll help you on patrols, if you decide to wear it out there." The way your face lit up as you looked up at him sent a fluster through him again, making the clasps go from difficult to impossible to figure out.
The way he fumbled with the heavy duty clasps took your attention from his reaction. "Oh here, let me help." You stood up from his bed and stepped towards him, your hands brushing against his as you grasped the clasps from him.
A heat flooded his face at your concentration on the clasps around his neck. You made quick work of the clasps, easily latching them together before adjusting the bunched neck of the cloak to sit in its proper place over them, then straighten the neck a little bit until you deemed it suitable. That was until you remembered the last feature. "Oh! I nearly forgot the best part." Your fingers ran around the neck, pulling you closer to him as you gripped the apex at the back of the large bunched neck. With a delicate touch, you lifted it up and over his head, showing the hidden owl hood of the neck. "There." You hummed softly, running your loose grips down the sides of the hood to straighten it, achingly close to his cheeks. "Perfect."
Tokoyami was barely able to keep himself together, much less the suddenly needy Dark Shadow the desperately tried to break free and get to you.
It only really clicked in your head that you were a little too close in that moment. A sheepish air over came you as you took a quick step back. "Uh... so —ahem— how's it feel?"
He stiffly pulled his floating mind back to earth, opting to take a few steps away himself in the form of walking towards his mirror. "It feels very nice, it's light but thick." The cloak billowed with each push on the inside from his hands. "Thank you, L/n." He spots you through the mirrors reflection before turning back towards you. "This is very generous of you."
Another grin broke out on you, but a bit more shy this time. "You know, you can call me Y/n." You offer, forcing yourself to maintain eye contact.
The young man's eyes are wide as he stares back at you. "...Really?"
A horrid feeling of self-consciousness attacked you. Your hands began to frantically wave. "Y-You don't need to if you don't want to! Don't feel pressured or anything!"
He jumped at this before sweeping toward you, his voice frantic. "No! No I didn't mean it that way." He squawked. "I just— I'd be happy too."
"Oh, well great!..."
You both just stood in an awkward silence punctuated with the speedy heartbeats in both parties.
"You..." He cleared his throat. "You can call me Fumikage, if you'd like to."
You wrung your fingers with a nervous smile. "Okay, Fumikage... uh... well... merry Christmas." You said before moving towards his door. "Better let you get back to it."
He nodded. "Uh— right... merry Christmas."
However, just as your hand met with the doorknob, Fumikage spoke up. "Y/n—"
Unfortunately, he didn't get to finish his thought before Dark Shadow burst forth, wrapping tightly around you and dragging you back. "Waah!?" You yelped in shock until your back bumped into Fumikage.
"Y-Y/n! I didn't!— I'm sorry!" He burned up as you whipped around, staring at him wide-eyed.
Dark Shadow was still wrapped around your waist and torso, happily purring, or at least making a sound similar to purring.
Still attempting to get your bearings, you placed a hand on Dark Shadows head, trying to mentally catch up. "I-It's alright." You murmured, blinking rapidly.
Fumikage's concerned horror turned to a quiet angry rage as he stared Dark Shadow down.
Dark Shadow didn't back down so easily this time. "Hey, don't glare at me like that! You wanted to hug them too!" He cried, unabashedly.
Now he was truly and completely overwhelmed. The situation had spun so far out of his control he couldn't find a believable way to explain away what had transpired.
You blinked, a slight frown forming between your brows as you lifted your gaze to Fumikage again. "You wanted a hug?"
He couldn't deny it, lest he be branded a liar, and an obvious one at that. In fact finding any words proved difficult, so he opted to simply drop his head, hiding behind the hood you'd placed atop his head.
Somehow it could get worse. Dark Shadow took Fumikage's silence as an invitation to basically read his journal aloud to you. "He definitely wants to. He has for a long time too, but he's always saying how embarrassing feeling like this is. He's been like this since first year! It's absolute torture for me!" Dark Shadow all but weeped as he tightened around you slightly.
At this point Fumikage's feathers had puffed so much his head almost looked like a ball of black down filling out the hood on his head.
You couldn't help the intense warmth creeping up your neck and to the tips of your ears. A potent tension clouded the entire room as you swallowed thickly. "Is that true?" You asked quietly.
Fumikage stood totally still for an unnerving amount of time, gripping the inside of his cloak tightly.
Finally, he slowly nodded. "Yes, it's true."
You took in a deep breath, marinating on his confirmation before boldly stepped close and wrapped him up in your embrace.
He was stunned for a few seconds, his arms stiff at his sides until it registered in his mind what was happening. His arms slowly caged around you until they made full contact with your body.
The way you melted into him slowly soaked away his hesitation as he soon firmly pulled you closer to him, hooking his chin over your shoulder. His strong arms were far more gentle and comforting then you might've expected from the guarded young man, so it was a pleasant surprise and eager to reciprocate your touch.
After a long hug, he pulled away just enough to look you in the eyes. "I'll bring you a gift when school starts again." He promised as his hands squeezed your shoulders.
You laughed and shook your head. "Thank you, but it's really not needed. As long as we can hug more often."
His eyes became saucer-like at your bold words. "I-uh—! A-Alright."
You chuckled, your hands resting on his forearms. "I should go soon, I still have to pack. I hope you have a good break Fumikage." Your hands rubbed his forearms as his hands were still attached to your shoulders before you hooked under his hands, holding them between you both. "I'll see you later, okay?"
He nodded, blinking away his stupefaction as best as he could.
Your grin only widened at his shy demeanour. "Alrighty then." With that you slipped from his hands, finally managing to get past the threshold of his dorm without Dark Shadow interfering.
Although he agreed not to, he immediately started to think up gift ideas for you as he continued packing, still wearing the cloak.
