hurting hermits 11: Oh Dear, there's more of him.
Trigger warning, jevin gets force fead during the backstory
The meeting seems to drone on and on. With more and more problems cropping up as they go. It's exhausting. Jevin feels his slime squishing and starting to drip from boredom.
Solidifying himself, Jevin excuses himself for a moment. As he walks he sets a foot down and squishes into a bright blue pile of slime.
Wels is next to him in an instant, his tail flicking concerned, "You ok?"
"No," Jevin grumbles.
"Do we need to cool you down?" Biffa asks, as Etho bolts for his ice shop.
Jevin melts down further.
"Cauldron," Grian calls, hopping onto the table.
The hermits transfer a confused slime into the cauldron and look over him confused until Etho get's back and dumps some ice under the cauldron. Slowly Jevin reforms and yawns.
"I think we need to talk about that," Xisuma says as he shuffles from his spot on the floor.
Staying in his cauldron, Jevin shrugs, "I don't know why I melted, I was normal, then I got bored and squished."
"Jevin... anything else?" Biffa asks, "You never just melt, not anymore."
"I do when I'm stressed...but I'm not," Jevin sighs, "I miss being human... I've been a slime for so long that if I do get back to normal... it won't end well."
Padding over Ren set's his head on the corner of the cauldron.
Jevin seems to quiver a bit before he sighs, "You want to know how this happened?"
"Are you sssure?" Wels asks as Biffa hovers over his shoulder.
"Yeah, you guys should all know what happened."
~~~~~~~~~~~
Jevin runs to the town walls. It's spring so the slimes have extra plant matter to eat so they've grown absolutely huge. Splitting them into a manageable size and killing them will be nearly impossible. So some volunteers head out to cut them up a bit before the hunters head out.
The only reason he's even out here is Wels. He'd convinced him during a math class to come and intern for the town guards for the spring.
Easy money, he had said, "Wels, we have two very different definitions of easy."
"Oh come on," Wels grins, "It's fun."
"Tripping and getting covered in mud isn't fun."
Wels blinks, "True. Do you really dislike this, that much?"
"No, it's fine," Jevin grins high fiving his best friend, "I'm just complaining."
The cycle continues after school, go out and cut the slimes up so it's easier for the town guards to beat them. Until one day Wels had a dentist's appointment, so Jevin was out on his own.
All at once, a long boring task that's normally easily completed is incredibly difficult. Slipping in the thick swamp mud, Jevin runs from the slime that's swiftly overtaking him.
There's a witch hut up ahead. He bolts for it, clambering up the ladder he huddles inside as the slime squelches against the walls.
Sighing in relief Jevin slumps down and pulls his communicator out to call for some help. He presses a button and looks up.
Sharp laughter comes from behind as a potion is doused over his head. Slumping to the floor he gasps in pain. The witch grabs him and drags him over to her table. She points to the slime outside and frowns.
"I'm sorry," Jevin gasps.
For what feels like hours the witch splashes him with potions or forces him to drink them. Looking him dead in the eye she opens a window, grabs a chunk of slime, and shoves it into his mouth.
Gaging he tries to spit it out but finds his mouth magically bound shut, without a choice he swallows. Moments later the door is kicked open by a familiar cyborg and a sword plunges into the head of the witch.
Instantly the magic holding him still brakes. Gagging again Jevin throws up, the potions and slime mixing in a toxic puddle on the floor. Gently patting his back, Biffa helps him stand.
"You alright there, did she do anything?"
Jevin nods, "I don't know what she did, but there were so many potions. She made me eat slime."
Wincing Biffa helps him up, "Can you handle a teleport?"
Jevin shakes his head no as he shakes softly.
"Ok, we'll walk home."
It takes a few hours and a piggyback ride but they bring Jevin to a local watcher. The watcher takes one look at him and frowns.
"We haven't seen this curse in years."
Jevin pales, "The story kids are told so they stay out of swamps?"
The watcher nods, "An unbreakable witches curse."
Biffa looks down at Jevin and frowns, "Any idea what curse?"
"Did they make you eat anything?"
"Slime," Jevin murmurs.
"Are you hungry?" The watcher asks.
Shrugging Jevin nods, "A little," This is a lie, he's practically starving.
"And where are your parents?" The watcher asks as he writes something down.
"On a trip, they're exploring the far lands or something."
The watcher nods, and hands Jevin a small food bar, "Could you try that for me?"
Unwrapping it, Jevin takes a small bite and then grins.
"Is it good?" Biffa asks, concerned, "It looks weird."
Jevin nods as he finishes the food bar, "It's really good."
The watcher frowns, "I think you already know, but you're going to turn into a slime."
Running a hand through wispy blond hair with light blue tips Jevin nods softly, "How long will it take?"
"After it starts anywhere from two days, to two months."
Jevin swallows hard as Biffa walks him down the street, "If you want to stay with me you can, or ask Wels' parents. Please don't be alone."
Stumbling Jevin walks over, "Can we deal with that tomorrow? I need to sleep..."
Biffa's face softens, "Of course, get some rest."
Wandering into his house Jevin clutches at his stomach and sinks down into his bed. He feels like he got kicked in the stomach.
With a soft crackle, his communicator appears on his nightstand.
Turning away from it he curls up and falls asleep.
The next morning Jevin gets up and looks at the clock and curls back into bed. He hums a bit before shooting Wels a message to come to his place after school.
Judging from his response Biffa had told him at least some of the details.
After sleeping for most of the day Jevin pads around the kitchen looking for something to eat.
Nothing looks good. So he returns to his spot on the couch.
A little after two o'clock Wels shows up with Biffa following a few feet back.
"Hey."
"Hi."
Biffa nods as he hands Jevin a bag of food, "Here, the slimes seem to like these foods."
"you really don't need to," Jevin mutters as he looks at the fruits.
"I'm in charge of you interns, and I'm going to say this now you'll have more to deal with than you think."
Wels leans over, "What do you mean?"
"Slimes don't think the same way we do," Biffa explains, "they are completely different organisms."
They talk about things for a while drifting from topic to topic. Then Jevin runs a hand through his hair and it comes back sticky.
Starting to panic Jevin stands up and paces around until he crumples to the floor and starts to melt.
The next time he awakes he's in a boat and feels all icky and flat, "Mmrrmph."
"Oh shoot," Wels jumps up and over to Jevin, "Hey."
As Wels reaches into the boat Jevin shies away from his hand.
"Uh, can you see?"
Trying to nod Jevin freezes, Moving feels all kinds of wrong. Like everything has liquified then reformed slightly off.
"Uh, try to reform your mouth," Wels suggests, scared.
Jevin readies himself and raises a hand to his face, his skin is transparent. Eww, his arm looks normal, but with transparent skin and muscle, "Mm- you can see my bones."
"Hey, you did it," Wels grins, "How do you feel?"
"I was hit by a truck," Jevin mutters.
Wels wrinkles his nose, "My parents want me to go home, do you want to come with me?"
Jevin frowns, "I don't think I can go that far."
"Ok, I'll come over in the morning. Biffa's out front talking to the watchers."
Jevin sinks back into the boat, "See you."
"See you," Wels frowns at his friend.
Once Wels is gone Jevin squishes down and wiggles out of the boat. As he trips over to the bathroom he bumps into a vase. It falls, he manages to catch the vase but the flowers end up in his upper arm.
Panicking Jevin watches as the bright blue of the flowers spread across his body. Struggling to keep his form he looks at his face.
Burning tears drip down his face and he touches the mirror to make sure it's him. His face is unrecognizable, the slime slowly dissolving him.
As he watches he melts softly. Slowly walking to his room he pulls some blankets over and sleeps in the boat. Biffa on the couch nearby.
In the middle of the night, he wakes up and can't move. Taking a quick look he finds he's mostly melted down into a shapeless blob.
The melting works its way up to his neck and over his head. Suddenly he can feel it. The slime tugging at his human bits and devouring them... It's not as painful as he expected.
Once the slime is finished Jevin huddles into a small ball and falls asleep.
A voice calling his name draws his attention and he peeks up over the side of the boat.
"Hey Jevin," Biffa murmurs, "You're almost done, it's halfway over."
"How'd you get all blue?" Wels asks.
Jevin makes a small popping sound before sinking back into himself.
"It's ok you don't need to explain," Biffa murmurs as he sets an apple in the boat.
Not thinking, Jevin slinks onto the apple and devolves it.
Wels looks at him, "What else can you eat?"
Jevin perks up and wiggles excitedly.
They mess around for a few hours, Jevin learning how to move and reform and Wels helping and giving encouragement, he's given a variety of foods and he can devolve almost anything.
It took weeks for Jevin to get back to a normal kind of mindset. He still slips into a more slime-based one but he's getting better.
One unfortunate thing about slimes is they can't smell. They don't have any scent receptors.
Jevin doesn't go out on the slime hunts anymore, it's not that fighting them feels wrong. He's just afraid he'll get absorbed.
~~~~~~~~~
Wels cracks a smile as his wings flutter, "You never told me how you turned blue."
Jevin laughs, "Yeah, it never came up again."
The hermits ask Jevin a few more questions and he answers them.
An odd look passes his face and suddenly he's gone and the four mini Jevin's are sitting on the floor confused.
"We didn't mean to do that," One of them murmurs.
Another nods, "I think we're unstable."
"Anyone have baking soda?" One asks as its form starts to slip.
"Why do you want that?" Joe asks softly, blinking around the room.
The fourth mini Jevin sighs, "We're too watery so that'll help us stabilize."
"And?" Biffa mutters softly grinning at the four kids.
"Maybe a volcano?"
The hermit's laugh softly and help the Mini Jevin's out. It'll take a bit for Jevin to fuse back together.
"Is it just me or are they extra bouncy today?" Hypno groans as he slumps next to Wels.
"I think so," Wels murmurs as he helps Cub onto the couch.
Nodding Cub looks at his paws then over at the Jevin's, he paws at Wels then looks towards the four Jevin's.
After a moment Wels pulls on one of his new horns, "Maybe, you think the meteor gave him extra slime stuff?"
Cub nods again and curls up into the corner. As the Mini Jevin's slowly work down from their excitement they refuse and Jevin is able to confirm he's more slime-like.
