(Takes Place in Maximum, stampede begins post prologue)

When Vash is still too young to care for himself at all, on the cusp of teething and barely some three months old, Rem starts to wake him and Knives in the mornings consistently. She takes them along her morning routine, brushing her hair, washing her face and other such things. She tells them about what she's doing and why, how humans take care of their teeth because they only have two sets of them. She talks about remembering to wash behind your ears and under your nails and whatnot.

Many of Rems lessons end up repeated a few short weeks later, when Vash and Knives start talking and properly remembering things, but she doesn't mind at all when she gets to watch them learn with excitement and joy.

Vash gets up in the mornings with Knives about an hour after Rem does. He brushes his teeth while his brother combs his hair for him before they switch off some minutes later. After they've both combed each others' hair and brushed their own teeth, they wash their faces and run off to eat breakfast with Rem, who is usually done with her morning checklist of tasks by then.

During the time when the ship's crew are woken and when Vash and Knives find out about Tesla, the two go about their mornings more skittishly, quiet and shy. Time, of course, still runs its course, and the dynamic eventually shifts back in place. Vash slowly grows out of it with time, but he can't help but notice that Knives doesn't quite seem to do the same. It's a little late to do anything when he realizes he should have.

Vash wakes up with the suns, blinking tiredly as he shifts from his spot in the sand or on a rock and watching as the first sun peeks up from the horizon to follow in his morning journey. He glances around until his eyes catch on his brother, who is usually staring in the direction they'd be headed. Vash counts the seconds of silence between them before quickly giving up, rising to stand and follow his brother once more.
