Countdown

"Levy! Look, my timer is down to only one more day! I'm going to find out who my soulmate is in only a day!" I squealed with my blue haired best friend.

"Oh my gosh, Lucy I am so excited! I bet you're hoping its Na-" I clap my hand over my mouth. I cough awkwardly and shake my head quickly.

"He's my best friend! I couldn't..." I give her a small smile and drop my hand.

"Lu-chan, your actions say otherwise." I meet her steady gaze with slight surprise. What in Mavis's name could she mean? My questioning look made her release a small laugh. "I have to go home now, but text me tomorrow after your...encounter." Her eyebrows wiggled and I rolled my eyes.

"Bye Levy, I'll talk to you tomorrow," I wave to her as she hurries out. I had seen her own numbers as she left, they where splayed across her left shoulder blade and her time wasn't much longer than mine. A small grin tugged at the edges of my lips as I gathered my things; stuffing them in my bag so I could head home as well. I walked slowly on my way, thinking about who I wanted my soulmate to be. Levy had hit that nail on the head, but I hadn't seen Natsu's timer so I couldn't know...

Mine had appeared a month ago, making itself known on my right hand. I stared at the numbers as they ticked downward, my stomach turning. What if it wasn't Natsu? Well, I shouldn't worry about that. Whoever it will be...they will make me happy. I felt my phone buzz and I pulled it out. A message from Natsu lit up my screen.

Levy told me your timer is almost out.

I stare at the message, unsure how to respond for a moment. Then I gingerly slid my finger across the screen and selected the reply tab. I quickly typed my response--nothing but an affirmation of the afore mentioned timer--before locking my phone and shoving it back into my pocket. I continued my walk but I was faster this time. I wanted to be home safely just in case the waterworks decided to make an appearance. I felt my phone buzz again and I whipped my phone from my pocket yet again. I read the screen quickly.

Aren't you going to be modeling again?

I bit my lip, realizing what he was saying. I would be busy in front of a camera...all day... I ran my hands through my hair and sighed, reassuring myself I would find them, there was no way I wouldn't. I responded carefully this time: Yeah, I'll be heading into the city to work. I frowned slightly, knowing Natsu didn't love the fact that I traveled in the city alone. But it was something I couldn't avoid, it was where my modeling company was based and their studios aren't exactly mobile.

It wasn't that long of a wait before my pocket buzzed again. I was home, so I unlocked my door and flicked on the lights. I set my bag by the door and pulled my hair from its ponytail as I slammed the door closed with my hip. I grabbed my homework and sat down at the counter to begin completing it. After a few hours, right as I was deciding to eat I dozed off, my exhaustion evident. What later jolted me awake was my phone buzzing beside me on the counter. I flashed a look at the time and realized it was almost eight. I quickly looked at my phone's screen.

Lucy-san! Gray-sama's timer matches mine! .

I laugh softly at Juvia's message. She had been anxious to know what Gray's timer was ever since hers had made an appearance a few days ago. I didn't ask how she found out though, I would leave that piece of information unknown. I smiled at Natsu's text before I got up and grabbed some food. I finished working as I ate, growing more and more clumsy. Finally I gave up and got up one more time, placed my dishes in the sink and neatly put away my homework before shuffling to my room. Once there I changed into a tank top and pajama pants before collapsing on my bed, not even bothering to cover up before completely passing out.

The next morning the second after my eyes opened my heart tightened as I remembered what today was. That thought alone energized me and I raced to get ready. I dressed simply in a black sweater and skinny jeans, bright pink converse to finish it off. I applied a very small amount of makeup and put my hair up in a ponytail before brushing my teeth. I grabbed a quick breakfast and then headed out the door with my phone in hand.

I took the bus into the city and watched the scenery pass me by lazily. My thoughts drifted to Natsu as I wondered what he was up to. Though one look at the time told me he was definitely still asleep. A smile found its way onto my face as I thought about him laying sprawled out across his messy bed, arm hanging over the edge and his normally sharp features reduced to a softer relaxed look. I leaned my head on the window, eyeing my stop not too far ahead. As the bus rolled to a stop I got up and made my way off, my feet carrying me to my modeling agency's studio.

I swung the doors open and I was greeted with a set, cameras and the familiar crew. After calling my greeting out I was whisked away, already beginning. We where taking shots for the winter edition of Ink, a popular magazine among teens and young adults. I had fun throughout the shoot, but my mind was distracted. I kept glancing at the dwindling time on my hand, something that would be edited out of the photos later no doubt. As the camera flashes and I posed again and again I kept thinking of who it could possibly be.

Lunch break came and went, I barely had time to eat before I was pulled back into taking pictures with Mirajane and a few other models. Mira and I would talk between sets, while we had our makeup and clothing done. I expressed my worries that my soulmate wouldn't be who I wanted it to be. She gave me her winning smile and leaned over to me. "Don't fret too much, I'm sure things will turn out as they should be." Her words sent a wave of reassurance and calm over me. She was right, and I had no need to be worried. I breathed out a soft sigh of relief.

"Thanks Mira," I smile back at her and she laughs.

"No problem Lucy. Just make sure to tell me who it ends up being. I'm rooting for Natsu too you know." She got up and made her way out to the set and my cheeks flushed. I hadn't mentioned who it was that I wanted, and I turned to watch her leave with a surprised look on my face. I shook my head and got up as well, ready to face the last half of my work day. By the end of it I was tired, but nothing I wasn't used to. I only had a few minutes left on my timer as I left, my goodbyes echoed by a chorused response from the others. My phone vibrated not long after I walked out and I pulled it out, seeing that Natsu was calling me.

"Hey," I respond as I hold my phone to my ear.

"Luce, I found my girl." My heart leapt into my throat.

"W-what?" I stammered. My hands where shaking and I forced myself to be calm.

"I found my soulmate, she's right in front of me, and she's the most gorgeous girl I've ever laid eyes on." My thoughts whirled. His timer must have been earlier than mine...

"Congratulations...Natsu. Who...who is it?" My voice was quiet, timid even. I was afraid to know.

"Well, her name is Lucy...she's my best friend." The voice came from behind me--not my phone--and I whirled around.

"Natsu!" I exclaimed as I looked up at him, his phone in hand. He was grinning from ear to ear and I breathed deeply, realizing I had been holding my breath the whole time.

"Hey there, soulmate." He smirks and I blush at the word. Is this even happening...? Natsu grabbed me by the waist and led me to his car. "I'm going to take you home, alright?" He murmurs into my hair and I nod, my words evading me. Natsu had noticed and laughed softly. He got in on the other side of the car and drove out of the city.

"I don't think I've ever rendered you speechless this long," Natsu's teasing voice made me jump a little.

"I'm not speechless." I protest with a slight pout.

"Oh then you just don't wanna talk?" He chuckled.

"Uh..well no," I mutter shyly.

"Then say something," there was challenging in his voice. I glance at him with a small smile.

"Who's home are you taking me too exactly?" I question.

"Mine." His answer was quick and my heart rate quickened. I turn to him fully.

"Yours?!" I repeat surprised.

"Of course, where else would we go?" He turns to me and I'm inches from his face. My breath hitches and I quickly draw back.

"Sorry.." I murmur as red coloring spread across my face. Natsu doesn't respond as he pulls into his driveway. He gets out and I hesitantly follow in suit. He walks over to me and grabs my wrist, pulling me close.

"I couldn't tell you how long I've waited for this Lucy," he whispered into my ear, his breath tickling the sensitive skin.

"Do what?" I ask on instinct and turn towards him. When I do his lips meet mine and my heart skips a beat. Natsu's other hand slid it's way around my waist and pulled me closer. When we pull back I was nearly breathless.

"That," he grins and I lean my head against his chest. He suddenly lifts me up and I squeak in surprise as he makes his way inside. I protested at first but eventually just went along with it, enjoying every moment. I mean, who wouldn't? My soulmate is my best friend after all.
