Chapter Twenty-Six
Eyes gazing over the field of wreckage in the loft, Alex crouched by a turnt over stool. The Demontra's nose could pick up every scent lingering throughout, that of which included Scott and Kira's but also one she recognized as close to her own.
Kate.
But Kate's presence wasn't the only one she could detect. The amount of ruins narrated the entire scene, and both Alex and Derek knew that Scott and Kira would never be taken under the sole will of Kate. She had help in the form of Berserkers.
The werejaguar and werewolf remained in the loft, an awed silence draped over them, but it was soon broken upon the entrance of Stiles and Sheriff Stilinski. Stiles had learned of his best friend's disappearance though a string of unanswered texts and calls along with a final confirming call from Alex herself.
As Alex rose to her full height, dropping the fragment of wood in her hands, she turned to watch the shock flash over the two Stilinskis' faces.
"What the hell happened," the teenage boy breathed, brown eyes wide.
"It was suppose to be a date," Derek stated.
"They were both here," Stilinski asked, eyebrows furrowing .
Nodding, Alex sighed, "And they're both gone."
She couldn't help hide the sheen of worry that spread of her features. Multiple sources of it spun around in her mind, them ranging from the fact that two of her friends were missing, taken by the one woman who turned her, and the amount of unanswered calls she left on Chris' voicemail throughout the day.
It wasn't like him to disappear for hours without a sign.
A buzz sounded from Stiles' pocket; his hand moved to pull it out instantly. "Hey," his voice rang out, the device pressed to his ear.
"Scott's been taken," Lydia uttered from the other end at the animal clinic. Her voice could be heard as whisper to those farther away from the line.
"Scott and Kira, we just don't know where."
"Mexico," Deaton revealed, "and if you want to save his life, that's where you're going too."
**********
Upon the realization that the True Alpha and Kitsune were taken to Mexico, it sprung the remaining Beacon Hills pack into a frenzy to get them back,
No one dared to close their eyes for a second, spending every moment to prepare for a trip across the border.
As the dawn broke over the horizon, Stiles went to the Sheriff's station to convince his dad into letting him go to Mexico as Alex prepped and packed the mini arsenal in Derek's loft.
With the two standing around the table, an abundance of fire weapons and ammunition before them, Alex reloaded one of handguns. Although she had never fired one for the purpose of hunting, she had use to spend days with her mother at firing ranges, only discharging practices blows a couple of times. Her lack of aim left her practically useless with a gun, yet it gave her the look of a fighter with much greater talents. Although now she didn't nor ever would need it.
"I still don't like relying on these things," Derek sighed, his hands resting on the edge of the table.
"I get," Alex nodded, her voice soft, "You miss your power. I would too."
"It's not about power, it's about being able to help. I don't like feeling helpless."
"Derek, I am a terrible shot. Do I look helpless," she raised an eyebrow, loading a clip into another handgun.
"You look much more intimidating than me," the man cracked a smile but, the brunette could see right into his broken, worried eyes as he turned from her.
"We're gonna find a way out of this," Alex said. She was sure how, but she wasn't going to let him die.
"I heard what you and Matthew were talking about yesterday," he said, eyes glancing up, "Alex, I want you to know how much it means to me, but I just... I feel like there's not enough time."
"Do you really think you won't be coming back," the Demontra turned to face him, concern paired with sadness flooding into her blue eyes.
"Not alive," he admitted, his eyes unable to meet hers.
Placing the gun back on the table, she shook her head as her feet closed the space between them. "You know I'm not okay with that," she breathed.
His expression somber, he rose to his full height from his leaning stance, stepping towards the girl he had grown to care immensely about within the few months. With her eyes gazing into his, trying to read what he was thinking, his hand lifted to gently cup her face. Her heart beat fast in worry, worry originating from everything that could come, but the moment his lips touched hers, she felt it melt away for a moment.
But as their lips slightly parted, and their foreheads rested against each other's, it returned just as fast.
"I am," he breathed, his eyes connecting with hers, "If it saves Scott and Kira." After a pause, they both turned once more. "To be honest, I'm not even if this is even enough firepower to take down one Berserker."
"Not even close," a humored voice belonging neither to them echoed from the spiral staircase along with a pair of descending footsteps.
"Killing a Berserker is next to impossible," Peter Hale revealed, making an appearance on the final step. "It's not just the firepower, it's breaking the animal spirit from the human."
"Well the one person we know with that kind of experience is Argent. And he's not getting back to me," Derek stated.
"Me either," Alex added with her brow furrowing into a scowl at the sight of the older man. Seeing him brought on a strong sense of animosity towards him. He was, after all, the one who began the hunt of all of their heads.
"Well then, we're going to need help. Like Malia, maybe Liam, and definitely me," the man smirked after listing.
But Alex knew deep in her gut that aligning with him wouldn't end well. It never did, but she herself had no idea what they were getting themselves into.
Little did Alex know that it would result with an aftermath much more devastating than Kate could ever cause.
**********
From the moment her and Derek set sail on packing every weapon into the SUV, her phone buzzed with a constant string of messages from Stiles.
Stiles: Hey, can you call Braeden?
Alex: yeah, how come?
Stiles: We're going to need some help taking Liam.
Furrowing her eyebrows in confusion, she sent back another question.
Alex: how come?
Stiles: Because of the full moon...?
Shit, she thought.
The date of the full moon had completely slipped her mind with everything going on, and she suddenly realized it would be in full bloom in less than twelve hours. The thought it of made her veins rush with anxious adrenaline. It brought her back to the first time she drifted with Scott, the pain she felt as her own strength took over him and her. Even though she had a better grip on her shift than most newly bitten shapeshifters, she still felt new to it all.
Finding herself sitting in the back of the SUV, the trunk propped open, she bit her thumbnail, lost in thought, until Derek caught her attention.
"Alex, what's wrong," he ask, a duffle bag of weaponry in hand.
"I forgot it was the full moon tonight," she shook her head. Her worry about everything was increasingly building, reaching her breaking point, but she wouldn't let it show.
"Hey, you're going to be fine," he assured, joining her on the ledge.
"I'm just afraid I'll be too focused on staying in control that I won't be able to help."
"Here's a tip," he leaned in, his voice softening, "Don't even think about it. Don't stress about it." Seeing her crinkle her eyebrows slightly, he continued, "Alex, I have never seen someone with your sense of control, not even Scott. You don't have to worry about it."
He could still see the trepidation in her eyes, and to show her his faith, his fingers brushed along her cheek bone, moving to cradle to the back of her head. With her blue eyes meeting his, she tilted in to match his angle, allowing their lips to meet in a sweet yet longing kiss.
Smiling into it, she fell back, still holding him close to her.
But their moment was broken once more by an unwanted presence.
"That's cute, really," Peter stated, his voice saturated with sarcasm, "but I'd like to be getting going."
The two rose from their perched position in the open trunk, but a scowl soon grew over the brunette's features, "Why do you even care? You started all of this."
"Unintentionally," the man corrected.
"Yet you still don't feel bad about it," Alex fired back as she slid into the back seat.
Caught off guard, the man couldn't think of a response, and he left the air silent as he stepped into the driver's side with Derek pulling into the passenger seat.
The silence remained throughout the car ride to Argent Arms. Alex used the time to ask Braeden for her help and feeling hopeful when the mercenary responded with yes. She also contemplated on telling her father, but she was stuck, not knowing what was to come. Within the short twenty minutes, she decided against telling him; she couldn't risk the chance of losing her only family member left.
The motion of the brakes stopping the SUV and the change of scenery brought her out of her thoughts. As her eyes glanced up, she saw the surroundings of the warehouse along with Braeden and a prison van parked next to her, Stiles, Liam, and Malia already gathering.
"Are we really bringing him," Derek asked Stiles at the sight of Liam, anxiety about the full moon resounding off of him.
"Are we really bring him," the teenager fired back, motioning towards Peter in which earned a stifled laugh from Alex trailing behind them.
"We're bringing everyone we can," Peter cut in, "and considering Scott and Kira were taken the night before the full moon, we should probably get going."
"What's that mean," Malia wondered.
"If Kate took Scott back to the same temple that she took Derek, how do we know she's not planning to do the same thing to him?"
"What, she wants to make him younger," Liam raised his eyebrows with a question Alex began to ponder herself.
"Or taken him back to when he wasn't a werewolf," Derek added.
"A werewolf can't steal an alpha's power, but maybe," Peter shook his head, "a Nagual jaguar with the power of Tezcatlipoca behind her... Maybe she can."
With sharing an equally tensed glance, Alex toyed with her fingers out of nervous habit, and Peter broke the pause once more. Waving his hand, he said, "So, if everyone is sufficiently freaked out, I say we get going."
"We can't," Stiles deadpanned. "Not without Lydia."
