Chapter Four: The Offering
Alone again, I walked away from the fight that had just been underway. It had been this was for a long time. After Zero appeared, Yuki had given up all interest in me. I suppose she sees him as still injured and wanted to help him. She didn't see that us keeping our distance was what was good for her. Her whole family was demolished by the things Zero and I were part of. Zero and I were part of night and day, we walked a path Yuki could not.
Then why did Kaname have such an interest in her? Purebloods were known to have human pets, but Kaname didn't seem the type. Kaname was silent and calculating; it was hard to decipher if he was acting on emotions or just plain acting. Yuki should keep her distance, even from him.
Suddenly, the world spun and I leaned on one of the many campus buildings. Goddammit, I shakingly pulled out a small container of red pills and dry-swallowed two. My iron levels must have been low. This was one of the negative side effects for my human side, that I needed more meats to sustain myself.
“Anna," a voice sounded from up above. It was Kaien on the balcony above me. I looked around me for any late-night wanderers, but found none. I didn't hesitate to leap up 12 feet and land perfectly next to the headmaster.
“You scare me when you do that,” headmaster commented while clutching his heart.
I shrugged, “It's night time and you're one of the only people that know: I wanted to let some steam off.”
“Yes, I'm aware. Anyways, are you well?”
I clasped my hands together, “As right as I ever am.”
“I just saw you almost collapse, dear. Do we need to visit Dr. Icen, again? We haven't upped your dose in two years,” Kaien was obviously worried. I hated doctors.
“I'm fine, it's just been a long week with St. Xocolatl's Day and all,” I answered quickly, “Humans and vampires are like oil and water, but a bit more annoying.”
Kaien laughed, “I guess, you're right. Why don't you go to bed? Yuki and Zero can handle it.”
I nodded, I had homework to finish. “Thanks, have a good night, dad.”
The headmaster squealed and gave me a hug, “Sleep tight, dearie.”
I smiled and leapt opened the door to his quarters. I would use the hot water while I could. Screw Yuki and Zero and their seniority bullshit.

Today was the dorm inspection day and everyone was upset. Throughout school I had received death glares from the fanatic teenage girls at the school.
And then the inspection started. Photo after photo after photo, I don't even want to think about how many times they've masturbated to these photos. It's gross.
“You're so mean, Annabel! You don't understand!”
“I get they're pretty, but having these photos without consent in against school policy. They're banned.”
Slowly, Yuki and I hauled the contraband up the spiral stone steps. Zero was nowhere in sight.
“Where is Zero? Why are we always doing everything by ourselves?” Yuki complained.
I shrugged, “He's probably taking a nap. We can do this, it's not too heavy.”
Besides, it's me that's always working by themself.

We headed side by side to the night class dorms. A place I have never been to before.
“We've never been inside the night class dorms, I'm a little nervous. Are you?” Yuki asked, but Zero blew her off and hustled forward.
An old wizard-like man sat at a desk dressed in a white robe and hood. He sized us up as we stopped.
“I'm hi, we just-" Yuki started.
“You're from the disciplinary committee, go ahead.” He said in a raspy voice.
Suddenly, Yuki stopped in front of us with her arms to her hips, “Before we go inside. I want to see what you shoved in your pocket earlier.”
Zero looked surprised and annoyed. I looked at them with interest, but I grew nervous as I realized she meant his medication.
“Your hiding something aren't you? As part of the disciplinary committee, there's a moral code-," she said before tripping and falling down the stairs. Zero, being Prince Charming, tried to catch her before falling backwards. I rolled my eyes.
“I got it now,” Yuki taunted while holding a container of medicine, “What is this?”
Zero took it away, “It's none of your business, ok?”
He ran off with her on his tail. Of course, they left. I sighed and slowly walked up the stone steps into a house full of vampires.
A herd of vampires stood in the parlor in a variety of states of anger and of not caring.
“Sup,” I call out nonchalantly. That pissed them off. I smirked in response, “What room is first?”
“Ms. Annabel, for a second it looked like the inspection was being called off,” Kaname said from the top of the staircase.
“No, Zero and Yuki are behind in class and wanted some time to study, I offered to finish up our duties.”
“How gracious of you,” Kaname said with a closed-eye smile.
I nodded, “Just doing my job.”
Kaname headed down the stairs, with the vampires bowing as he passed. Huh, that could have been my life. “Let's get this done quickly then, follow me to the first floor rooms.”
I followed the tall brunette as the vampires opened their doors for us. Everything seemed in order. Everything clean and everything expensive. The sheets were the finest silk, but these vampires hailed from some of the richest families.
“I hope everything is in order, Lord Kaname and the disciplinary committee,” Ruka said. She was obviously just talking to Kaname. Bitch didn't even use my name. She probably doesn't even know it.
The only thing I found was a stash of food that was probably Rima’s.
“Food items over two boxes are not allowed. The additional food must be placed in the dining area or in any other food designated places,” I announced coldly.
“That will be taken care off, I fear Rima is at a photoshoot,” Kaname replied. Ruka bristled at the lack of attention.
More rooms passed.
“Annabel, may I ask you something?” Kaname asked. I looked up at his handsome brown eyes.
“As long as it ain't creepy; shoot.”
“Why did Yuki and Zero really leave?”
I stopped fully and looked at him. Why, out of all things, ask that?
“They got into a fight. Zero probably went to town to get comfort food and Yuki always follows him,” I replied walking toward. The west wing was done and we took the deserted back hallway to the east.
“They always leave you behind, don't they?”
My heart tremored. I looked down at the standard flats I wore and acted like I hadn't heard.
“They leave you to finish the work, don't they. You, the pureblood, is always cleaning up.”
I gritted my teeth and rolled my eyes, “Stop acting like our blood makes us special.”
We entered two big wooden doors. This room was bigger than the others.
“Please, inspect away. I hope I haven't broken any rules, Kaname leaned in the doorway.”
I looked back in realization. This was his room. Suddenly, I smelt something sweet. Kaname stood up straight.
“Please excuse me and stay here. There is an important matter I must get to.” In a blink of an eye, the doors were shut and Kaname was gone.
The first thing I did was go through his stuff. The books were particularly interesting. Most of them I had already read at my mansion back home. I spent most of my time learning everything about vampires. I hoped it would compensate for not being one. It didn't.
His furniture and clothes were of the finest quality, which wasn't surprising. The only accessories he had were cufflinks, but those too were impressive. Bored, I laid down on his large, soft bed and took another pill.
Why didn't he aso me to leave? Why stay here? I could go back to the dorm right now, so why did I stay?
Perhaps, I missed this life. The comfort and prestige. There were very few purebloods families in Europe. In fact, we were the monarchs of them back home. Off course, the public never saw me. I was kept away from the spotlight. Who would believe that King Augustine and Queen Cordelia would have a defected vampire? Their only known child was Princess Emmeline.
No, I didn't miss that. I missed my family. I missed feeling like a vampire.
“What would people say if they saw a girl in my bed?”
I jerked up and saw Kaname with a smirk on his face. “They'd say she was too good for him.”
Kaname laughed and held out a hand to help me up. I smoothed my skirt out and crossed my arms, “So why am I here? It's getting too late to finish the inspection.”
“Straight to the point, aren't we?”
“I like pointy stuff, Kaname.” I flashed my blade. Kuran stayed silent for a while. What was he thinking about?
“Why don't you think our blood is special?”
The question threw me off, “Because, we are people. We're just like anybody else. If we're so powerful, why isn't the world better? Why does it have to make us targets for slaughter? Both of our families-.”
The mirror behind me shattered with a crash. The shards fell to the floor and shattered into splinters. I jumped forward, closer to Kaname. My heart began to race.
“Because we can do that without lifting a finger,” Kaname answered. His eyes were a bright red and it petrified part of me, but another part of me found it hot. “You're an anomaly, Annabel. I wonder why you were placed in this circumstance. I wonder what is the extent of your powers. I wonder if you will, ever be full vampire or full human.”
“You and me both, buddy.”
“I can help you figure out the answer to these questions. I noticed you've been getting sicker, maybe I can help,” Kaname almost whispered.
Sicker? I narrowed my eyes, “What do you mean by “help".”
“With the full extent of my powers, I will help you find the answers you've been looking for. It'll require training that can be done during the day when the night class is asleep,” Kaname explained. I listened carefully.
“What about my classes?”
Kaname raised an eyebrow, “Do you really care about your studies? I'm sure Headmaster Cross can give some explanation to why you are gone some days.”
True. My classes were boring. Kaien could always say that I was taking additional classes or that my blood disease was worsening. “Let me think about it."
I would like your answer soon. There's no telling how much this might take, and I would like to start right away.
Are you in my mind?
A pureblood can communicate to others purebloods if their close enough. I wasn't sure if this would work until I tried it.
I stared at the handsome pureblood in front of me. What power could we even unlock? I walked towards the window and opened it.
“I have patrol,” I spoke quietly.
“I will see you soon, Annabel Quinn.”
And I jumped.
