Chapter Five: A Promise Written In Blood
I patted down the hallways of the school. My flashlight needed a new battery as it flickered on and off. The flashlight was for the humans, I could see almost perfectly in the dark. Again, a sweet smell came from across campus. A little lightheaded, I took another pill. Then the smell of blood hit.
Quickly, I opened one of the windows and jumped. Just as I entered the building I could sense Kaname and I halted. I didn't want to see him so soon. He'd take care of the situation.
Please, go to the night class and keep them calm. I need to take care of this.
I gasped at the sudden intrusion. Well, if he said please. I held onto my weapons and ran the other way.
"Annabel, lovely to see you again," Takuma greeted. The teacher was gone. All of the students were drinking their fake blood.
"Whose blood is this?" Ruka cried blatantly. The class quieted done.
"The situation is being handled, just calm down for once," I answered briskly and sat on the teacher's desk. I spun one of my knives around in fake boredom.
"That'd work if we didn't hear how hard your heart is racing." Aido remarked. "Perhaps the situation is frightening or maybe your situation is frightening."
"Perhaps you need to shut the fuck up. Kaname politely asked me to come babysit you and that's what I'm doing. Misbehaving would go against Kaname's word."
"That's quite disrespectful to Lord Kaname. You shouldn't even be allowed to utter his name," Akatsuki said lowly. Steam grew from his glass of fake blood. The other vampires bristled from the negative vibes.
I narrowed my eyes. "Kaname isn't my 'Lord'. We are acquaintances, and I will treat him with that respect. Now, calm down and wait."
My words must have had power as they all stopped talking and sat down. The silence was almost eerie, as was their response. They all sat like blank canvases in their chairs. They didn't move until Kaname entered the room. Promptly, they stood and bowed.
"Annabel, thank you for keeping the peace. I'll take it from here, please go get some rest," Kaname said happily. I mutely nodded and left, but one thought bothered me: why was Kaname acting?

I skipped class the following morning. I hadn't slept the night before. Kaname's offer and the incident with the night class bothered me. Why was he suddenly being so nice? He was nice before, but in a you're-a-friend-of-Yuki way. And why had the class been so submissive last night?
I instead did all of the homework that'd be due this week and got ready for the day an hour before my alarm would go off. As I wasn't planning on going to school, I just wore a black pleated skirt with a white top, my uniform jacket, and black knee sock with combat boots. I placed my jet black hair in a high ponytail and left the day class dorms.
I passed the gatekeeper with a nod and continued on my way inside the dorm. The night class would be getting out of class soon, so I hurried my way to Kaname's room. I didn't bother to knock, as I knew he would sense me here long before he got to the room. I took off my jacket, set it on his desk chair, and sat down on his bed. Maybe it was because the sun had risen, but I curled up on the dark covers and fell asleep.

"You have a habit of being Goldilocks, do you not?"
I jerked awake and fell to the floor with a bam. I groaned and rubbed my bruised hip. "Really? You could've just opened the blinds, you bastard."
Kaname chuckled, "I'll make a note of that for the next time you break and enter my room, where even Takuma is rarely allowed."
I winced, "Sorry, but it was the only way I wouldn't be seen."
Kaname raised an eyebrow, "This is a dorm of vampires. They smelt you as soon as they got within 20 feet of the building."
Yah, I'm an idiot. I got up from the floor and dusted myself off.
"Listen," I started, "I'm taking up your offer. Teach me how to break things with my mind, Jedi master."
He either didn't get the reference or didn't care. Instead, he took off his uniform jacket and hung it up in his closet. "I thought you'd be here to talk me out of transferring Zero to the Night Class."
I stopped, "What?"
"Think back to last night, what did you sense?"
I gave him an odd look as I sat down on the bed before closing my eyes. He was obviously talking about the attack. I remember going down the hallway before smelling something sweet. I had to take my meds, but then I smelt blood. As I approached, Kaname told me to handle the Night Class. Beyond that, nothing.
"Think deeper," Kaname added, "figure it out."
Wow. That helps.
With my eyes closed I gave him the middle finger as I went back to the smells. I've smelt the sweet smell before, when Yuki was attacked in town. Yuki...was attacked...she bled. I let out a gasp and looked towards Kaname, "Yuki, I smelt Yuki's blood last night."
"What did it smell like?"
"Something sweet, I can't tell, but then it smelt like copper," I answered. Why did he want to know that? He obviously smelt it too.
"You're sense of smell is interesting; first what a vampire would smell, then a human," Kaname said while moving to sit in one of the many chairs. "Especially since it's vampire first."
"So my vampire senses are stronger?" I smiled.
"You're senses are incredibly weak for a vampire, nevermind a Pureblood, but stronger than a human's," Kaname replied quickly. My face fell. I thought I was doing well. "Figure out who attacked her."
"Duh," I waved him off, "Zero. He's the only vampire with the clearance to be out, besides you. And you just told me about transferring him."
"Do you not consider yourself a vampire?" Kaname asked, his chocolate brown eyes looked into my sapphire ones. I looked away.
My gaze drifted to his private library, "Read any good books lately?"
"You are a vampire, and you are a human," Kaname said standing up to sit next to me on the bed. "You are incredibly unique, and rare."
I stared down at my legs as he got up and went over to his library. He came back with a stack a foot high, "I want you to read these."
I gasped at the amount of material. Hesitantly, I took the pile and combed through the titles: A Complete History of the Vampyre, Purity: A Purebloods Place, Vampires and Humans through the Ages, Unlocking Your True Potential, Pureblood Families, and The Hunters Hunting Hunters. I took out the titles I had already read leaving me with The Hunters Hunting Hunters, Purity: A Purebloods Place, and Pureblood Families.
"I read most of your books back in Europe," I explained in a bored tone. Reading, really? Reading! Ugh, I wasn't thinking that I'd be doing this. I placed my collection of books beside me and laid down, "So, what happened to the Night Class last night? They got weird."
I looked up when the silence got too long. Kaname was staring down at me with an unreadable expression. I sat up, "What?"
"You don't know? You couldn't feel it?"
I looked up at him in confusion, "Feel what?"
"You controlled them, Annabel, a power only Purebloods possess. Thankfully, none of them realised what had happened."
"I-I did what?" I stared down at my hands, "How was that even possible?"
Kaname sighed, "There's a test that I-"
Yuki's voice carried down the corridor. My blood froze. Why was she here! Aido's voice accompanied her, and he sounded angry.
"Let me go deal with this. This will mark the end of our training," Kaname spoke, suddenly somber. I nodded. As the door closed, I sighed. Yuki was getting carried away again. My thoughts drifted to the night before when I smelt her blood as it was being devoured by Zero. I could see why Kaname wanted him transferred.
Would Zero really let himself go to the night class, surrounded by those he hated? For four years, he has slowly fallen into his vampire instincts. He had fought the urge to drink blood, an instinct I lacked in.
I knew the urge well, despite this. My sister experienced it when we were on the run. Her pureblood bite didn't make me anymore of a vampire, but the feeling was addictive, like nicotine. A part of me missed it. Despite all of this, I could control vampires. How?
I watched Yuki run out of the night class dorm. A couple minutes later Kaname entered his room.
"Why are you still here."
"I was thinking."
He didn't ask any further and took to one of the many extravagant chairs in the room. We sat in silence; me trying to read a book, while he sat in thought. Why? Why was he so attached to Yuki? Why was he giving me this offer? Why make your rival Pureblood stronger?
A sensation overcame my mouth. Part of me thought I was a vampire and got confused when the fangs weren't there. Honestly, the feeling made me feel like chewing, like I was teething.
"What's the test? On how well I know vampire history? Trust me, I will ace it."
"I wanted to see how your blood could possibly be human and vampire, but that would require some testing," Kaname answered slowly.
I stood up and held out my arm, "So? Take a sample and get over it. I'm not afraid of needles."
Kaname fidgeted, he actually fidgeted. He stood up, "I meant something along the lines of 'taste-testing'."
My arm fell to my side. Oh. Ohhhh. It wasn't like I hadn't done this before, what harm could it do? I pulled my long black hair over to my right and loosened my shoulders, "Test away."
Kaname seemed surprised by my lack of hesitancy, but it wasn't like my blood was the Holy Grail. Blood was just blood.
Still, my heart raced faster and faster as he got closer. He placed his left hand on my hip and the right on my back. His breath was warm on my neck as he drew closer. There was hardly any room left between us. And then he bit.
For a second, it stung, but the calming agent relaxed me. I fell against him and placed my hands on his muscular back. I clamped down on lip to keep myself from making any noise, but that just made my lip bleed. I could hear him sucking my blood. I could feel the blood leaving my body. I felt faint again and Kaname held me up as even my eyelids felt heavy. Then he was done. I looked up at him, it had been almost a decade ago since my blood had been taken. My lack of iron took over and my eyes closed, but before unconsciousness took me, I felt a pressure on my lips. Then all there was was darkness.
