Chapter 16: Platinum Bastard

Us mighty Avengers (cue extreme sarcasm) gather around the kitchen table with a lovely meal made by Laura. Mixed veggies, baked potatoes and ham, plus some homemade iced tea. Nestle ain't got nothing on Laura Barton. After our meal, Laura and the kids move to the couch and let the superheroes talk business.

"Ultron took you folks out of play to buy himself time. My contacts all sat he's building something. The amount of vibranium he made off with, I don't think it's just one thing." Fury says from the kitchen counter.

Steve leans against the doorway and speaks, "What about Ultron himself?"

"He's easy to track. He's everywhere. The guy is multiplying faster than a Catholic rabbit. It still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans though." Fury continues and sips his iced tea.

"Is he still going after launch codes?" Tony asks, trying to aim a dart.

Fury walks over to the kitchen table and takes a seat at the head, "Yes he is, but he's not making any headway"

Tony throws the dart and misses the bullseye, "I cracked the Pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare"

I scoff and add, "And I hacked SHIELD's servers in less than an hour with a crappy Dell laptop"

Natasha looks at me and smirks, "You also went to Harvard" she whispers to me from across the table.

Fury gives me a look to zip it, so I shut my mouth and listen, "Well, I contacted our friends at the Nexus about that-"

"Nexus?" Steve asks. He's not exactly up to speed with computer related stuff.

"It's the world internet hub in Oslo. Every byte of data flows through there. Fastest access on earth." Bruce says. Good old Brucie always willing to spread the word of nerdville.

Tony takes another try at a bullseye and just misses. However, Clint's dart zooms past his head and lands perfectly centred on the red dot.

"So what did they say?" Tony asks and briefly glares at Clint.

"He's fixated on the missiles. But the codes are constantly being changed" Fury says.

"Any idea about who our little friend might be?" I ask and pour myself a third glass of iced tea.

"Party's unknown. But this little friend might not necessarily be a friend, he just happens to be Ultron's enemy. They aren't the same thing" Fury responds.

"I might need to visit Oslo, find our unknown" Tony says.

Nat leans back in her chair and turns to Fury, "Well, this is good times, boss, but I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that" she says.

Nick Fury stands from his seat and glances at all of us, "I do. I have you. Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere. Ears everywhere else. You kids had all the tech you could dream up. Here we all are, back on Earth with nothing but our wit and our will to save the world. Ultron says the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission. And whether or not he admits it, his mission is global destruction. All this laid in a grave."

I cringe thinking back to the fact that I helped create this monster, I but my heart and soul into him. Now he's a delusional maniac who wants to end the world. What a topsy turvy week this has been.

"So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard" Fury tells us, giving us a big push to get off our asses. Man if Steve was inside my head, he would not appreciate the kind of language I use.

"Steve doesn't like that kind of talk" Natasha chuckles.

Steve just glares at Natasha and smirks, "You know what Romanoff?"

I just chuckle, but regain focus when Fury speaks again, "So what does he want?" he asks.

Steve then takes control of the conversation, answering Fury's question by himself, "To become better, better than us. He keeps building bodies-"

Then Tony cuts in, "Person bodies. The human form is inefficient. Biologically speaking, we're outmoded. But he keeps coming back to it"

I spot Bruce walking over to Natasha. At first I hoped for a dramatic confession of his love for her...but when I realized he was looking at something on the table, my hopes were shattered.

"They don't need to be protected. They need to evolve...Ultron's going to evolve" Bruce says while still staring at the thing on the table, which I assume is a picture that Kayla drew.

"How?" Steve says. Asking the same question that everyone else was planning to ask.

Bruce finally looks up, "Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?"
