Chapter 11: I Won't Lie to You

It's late and I'm tired and I don't want Steve to nag me, or start an argument. But I still want to sleep in my own bed in my own home. So we leave Stark Towers a half an hour later, after we've done some clean up and I've grabbed my bag from the guest room I've been living in for the past three days.

We sit in my car for a few minutes, waiting for the other to speak. I know that he'll be the first to break the silence. So I wait.

"I forgot to mention this earlier, but you looked very nice this evening" Steve says. He makes small talk when he wants to avoid a subject, I expected him to get right down to the point.

"I was going to tell you not even five minutes before Ultron waltzed in" I say.

He nods and looks straight ahead, "It's fine. Well it's not fine, you helped create a psychotic robot. But your heart was in the right place. Plus you're you, I couldn't have stopped you if I tried. You're like Tony in that way, headstrong and a stubborn pain in the ass." he says.

I laugh, I guess I half expected an argument to commence. But I got into more of a fight with Tony than I did with Steve. I guess sometimes I just don't understand him.

"You better wash your mouth out after using that kind of language" I say, chuckling.

"Haha, very funny. Let's just get home. I need to sleep after this" Steve says and the next moment I'm driving through the streets of New York City towards my place in Manhattan.

•••••

In the morning, I'm up bright and early along with Steve. I'm not working at Stark towers today, because today I'm an Avenger. Well we're not actually fighting today, we're all just putting our heads together to find Ultron.

I dress in a pair of grey leggings, a blue knit sweater and a pair of converses. By the time 7:30 rolls around, Steve and I are already at Stark towers, heading up to the top floor. Which I assume is still as messy as we left it last night. Thank goodness Tony's rich.

We step into the elevator and press the button to the top floor.

"So did you bring all your brain cells this morning?" I ask Steve.

He smiles at me, "I'm not sure I have that many brain cells to offer" he responds.

"Well some are better than none" I say as the elevator doors slide open.

"I'm going to talk to Maria, she always finds something in cases like these" Steve says heading down the hallway to the right in search of Maria.

"Wait Steve!" I cal after him. He turns his head back and walks back towards me. "I still feel horrible about what happened last night." I confess, wanting to get this off my chest.

"Don't, you had the right idea about wanting to create Ultron. Ultron just didn't seem to have the right idea as you." Steve says patting my shoulder.

I smile and nod, "You aren't lying to me, just to make me feel better, right?" I ask.

Steve shakes his head and jogs off, "I don't lie to you Dahlia!"

I smile as he jogs away. I feel better knowing that he won't lie to me. Then that voice in my head comes back in an instant. That little voice that told me he lied to me just four short days ago. That he lied about not loving me like more than a friend. I can't shake that feeling. But he said he doesn't lie to me, I know everyone lies at some point, but I trust Steve enough to believe him completely. No matter how naive I might be acting.

I make my way to the upper levels where I see the others gathered. As I walk in, Thor shoves a tablet a Tony's chest. Obviously Thor has some pent up anger.

"Ultron killed Strucker" Steve announces.

"Well that's new" I say, peering over Tony's shoulder to look at the disturbing image. Strucker, dead with the word 'peace' written in blood on the wall next to him.

"And he did a Banksy at the crime scene, just for us" Tony adds.

"This is a smoke screen. Why send a message when you've just given a speech?" Natasha asks.

"Strucker knew something that Ultron wanted us to miss" Steve says.

Natasha turns to the computer in front of her and begins to type, "I bet...yup, everything we had on Strucker has been erased."

I sigh, frustrated with Ultron and knowing that I helped to create that wacko.

Tony glances up at us with a twinkle in his eyes, "Not everything"

With that, Tony is off down the hall at a jogging pace. Being curious, Bruce and I soon follow him. We spot him jog around a corner and as we catch up I spot the rest of the Avengers following us from behind. Once we spot Tony again, he's unlocking a door that looks like it leads to a supply room. We walk in after him and see stacks of boxes framing the room.

"Technology isn't always the best way to store information" Tony says and gestures to the boxes, probably filled with hundreds of thousands of files.

"Pepper made you keep these didn't she?" I ask with a chuckle. Tony just glares at me and smirks.

The others soon gather around and start looking through boxes, luckily all of them are beautifully organized and labelled by Pepper. We all search through the boxes that are labelled 'Strucker' or 'Hydra Scientists'.

"Know Associates" Steve chimes in, rummaging through a box, labelled 'Strucker - Known Associates'. Bruce and I walk over to the box and start flipping through files. I glance at the descriptions, arms dealer, mobster, international criminal, terrorist. Those are just some of the esteemed career choices Strucker's friends have chosen.

"Strucker had a lot of friends" Steve says looking at the pile of personnel files that we pulled from the box.

"Well these people are all horrible" Bruce says and places a pile of files onto the table next to him.

Tony glances over at Bruce to laugh, but instead his eyes go wide and he points to an open file in Bruce's hand, "Wait, I know that guy"

Bruce glances down at the file and then hands it to Tony. I walk around the table to stand next to Tony and glance over his shoulder.

"I know him from back in the day, he operates off of the African Coast, black market arms" Tony says, which earns him a glance from Steve, "There are conventions, you meet people, I didn't sell him anything" He says, replying to Steve's look, "He was talking about finding something new, a game changer. It was all very Ahab." Tony says.

Tony then passes the file to Steve and I to look at. I take one glance at the picture before Thor's big finger buds in a points at the man's neck.

"This?" Thor asks, glancing up at Tony.

"It's a tattoo, I don't think he had it" Tony responds.

"No that's a tattoo, this is a brand" Thor says, pointing to a reddish coloured symbol on the man's neck.

Bruce slides over to a computer near him, strums the keys a bit and the symbol pops up on the screen, "Ya it's a word in an African dialect that means thief in a much less friendly way" Bruce says.

"What dialect?" Steve asks.

"Wakanada...Wakanda" Bruce stutters, trying to sound out the word.

Steve and Tony look at each other with a worried expression. At first their expression confuses me, but then I make the connection, "Oh damn".

Steve looks to me, "If this guy got out of Wakanda with some of their trade goods" Steve says.

"I thought your dad got the last of it?" I ask Tony.

The others look at us, confusion obviously plastered on their faces.

"I don't follow. What comes out of Wakanda?" Bruce asks.

The three of us look at each other, "The strongest metal on earth" Steve announces and glances behind him at his shield.

"With that stuff in Ultron's possession, he could build an indestructible body" I say and glance at Steve who looks just as concerned as I am.

"Where is this guy now?" Steve asks Tony.

With that, we suit up and ship out to Wakanda, hopefully this place is prettier than Sokovia.
