Stop
I wonder what would happen if everyone stopped.
We claim that we can all move at our own pace, but the truth is that we force each other into a sprint.
"You can't keep up with the work? Oh, that's okay. You'll just have to think of yourself as inferior to everyone else. Why are you depressed? You're just as good as the rest of us, but you're going to fail in life."
That may not be what you say, but that's what we hear. Don't comfort me by telling people that there's something wrong with me. Just accept me as I am for who I am. Don't try to change me.
Anyone can diagnose someone. "You have the human instinct to perfect everything? You have OCD." "You're not weighed down by the stress of putting you're all into this one, small task? You have ADD."
What if we gave a fancy disorder title to people who wore makeup all the time? Or to people who prefer sports over books? Would you feel worse about the little things you do? Would you feel like you're less of a person?
Don't be a hypocrite.
Stop labeling people.
Stop trying to make us like you.
We're not you and never will be!
And instead of discriminating us for it, embrace it. Make us feel welcomed.
