Patton bowed his head, taking in a few deep breaths. The two detectives opposite him glanced at each other. Roman was the first to turn back to Patton. "What on earth do you mean by that? What are you hiding?"
The butler wrapped his arms around himself. "Ali has given us all a reason to hate him... And they don't want to admit it because they don't want you to ruin this family..."
"What do you mean?" Logan said, narrowing his eyes. "For Gods' sake, sit down, you look like you're gonna faint!" He took Patton by the shoulders, pushing him down onto one of the beds.
Patton swallowed dryly, quaking. He shook his head fearfully, biting his lip and Roman rushed to his aid. "Patton, it's okay," The young man promised. "We won't repeat a single syllable of what you say here to anyone else in the house. You're safe, Pat..."
"I don't wanna be a snitch," Patton whimpered.
"You won't be," Logan promised, sitting on the bed next to Patton while Roman crouched before them. "You'd be doing the right thing," He assured, putting his hand on the butler's' back.
Patton hesitated and said, "Okay. Okay, I can do this." He breathed in and Roman subtly turned on the recorder.
"Ali wasn't nice to anyone, especially Virgil," Patton began. "He was always bigger and stronger than Vee and he used that to his advantage by scaring Virgil and breaking Virgil's' stuff. Ali would-" His voice stammered. "Ali used to hit him a lot when bad things happened. He blamed Virge for a lot and I'm not Virgil's really that sad that he's dead," Admitted Patton shamefully.
"And the others?" Logan asked gently.
Patton nodded, to himself more than anyone else. "Joan and Talyn. A-Ali made them use he/him and she/her pronouns. He'd only ever refer to them as such and they hated it. Then Janus and Remus..." Almost instantly, something hardened in Patton's' eyes and he sighed. "I shouldn't talk about it. It's none of my business."
Roman looked slightly disappointed but he didn't try to object. "That's completely fine, Pat. Thank you for helping us."
"We really appreciate it," Logan smiled. "Stuff like this is scary, but you're handling this really well."
Patton bit his lip and slowly began to stand up, keeping his eyes fixated on nothing, unwilling to glance at the two others. "I probably have loads of work to do, I-I'll leave you to get settled in," he mumbled before rushing out as calmly as he could, closing the day behind him.
The detectives waited for a moment before turning to each other and chorusing, "We need to talk."
Logan went first. "Patton had just given us a lot of information and has told us more than he actually did."
"Explain," Roman replied.
"For starters, he's basically told us why Virgil's' mirror was broken. Ali would remind Virgil of his power over him by breaking his things. The mirror was punched and the fist honestly seemed too big to have been done by Virgil. Also, it gives Virgil's' reaction to his brother's' death more of an excuse," Logan pointed out, gesturing with his hands as he explained his thinking. "Virgil wouldn't be mourning over a brother who'd hit him, tried to force him to change his sexuality and broke his things. However, it could also push Virgil's' motive. Not only did they have a bad relationship but it was also physical. That increases the chance of an escalated fight being the cause of Ali's' death."
Roman nodded, then swooped in with his own realisation. "Also, it gives some motives to Joan and this Talyn person. They were angry with the misuse of their pronouns, maybe they were just so tired of it that they lashed out and killed him."
Logan hummed in agreement. "Very plausible. And then, what he didn't tell us about Janus and Remus has, at the same time, told us a lot."
This caused his partner to frown. "What do you mean?"
"It shows that whatever went on between Ali and they was related somehow back to each other. Also, how they act around each other-"
"But they haven't interacted with each other the whole time we've been here," Roman interrupted.
Logan shook his head. "That's not exactly true, please refrain from interrupting. The first sign I had that something was going on was when Remus told us that, if we accused Janus of the murder, he'd 'slaughter' us." Roman nodded and Logan felt a small smile on his face as he excitedly explained, feeling that old exhilaration in his blood. "He hasn't jumped to anyone else's' defence like that during the whole time we've known him. It symbolises a closer relationship. Besides, Roman, you were wrong." Roman frowned and Logan just smiled a little wider. "They have interacted. Virgil sent Remus to fetch Janus and Patton and Janus's' room would be the closest, seeming as he is the chef. Remus would've gone to Janus first and he definitely looked like he had."
Roman's' frown deepened. "What the hell are you talking about? No, he didn't."
"He did!" Logan insisted. "When we first met Remus, his shirt was tucked into his trousers. When he came back with Patton and Janus, they weren't. That means something must've happened between he and Janus, or Patton. But, from the behaviour we saw before, it was most likely Janus."
"Specs, you're a genius!" Roman said brightly, eyes wide in awe.
"I know."
"No, seriously!" Roman stood up. "We already know Janus was going to be fired and who's not to say Remus was to be fired as well? We know Ali was homophobic and maybe the two were dating, or at least into each other. Ali founds out and fires them. In order to keep their jobs and each other, they murder Ali!"
Logan frowned. "Okay, when you say it like that, it sounds like a cheesy, romantic fanfic-" Then his phone began buzzing. Logan picked up, holding it to his ear. "Hello, Archie. What is it?"
"I know you're probably working on the case, right now," His friend said. "But I've got some good news for ya!"
"What is it?"
"The autopsy place says they're ready for you to see the body."
