Raptor of the Night
After the family had gotten settled in, Kev led them to the monorail.
"You see that paddock up there?" Kev asked the kids, pointing at a large paddock on a hill. He nodded towards it. "That's where Hunter is," he said.
"Is Hunter the indoraptor?" Nikki asked. Kev just smiled at her and walked onto the monorail. Nikki and Peter shared an excited glance and followed him, their mother behind them. The 4 dogs took their seats, Nikki and Peter immediately turning to look out the window.
"Look at all those trees!" Nikki said. "It's like we're in the jungle!" The train began to move away, and the two pups were desperate to spot a dinosaur. During the entire trip, Nikki and Peter kept pointing out a dinosaur.
"Oh. My. Dog. An apatosaurus!" Nikki squeaked.
"There's a gallimimus!" Peter squeaked.
"Over there! Looks like a small brachiosaurus!"
"And there's a raptor!"
Finally, the train stopped at their destination. The dogs walked out of the train, and Kev looked up at the paddock nearby. He began walking towards it with the two pups trotting beside him.
"Hey, the sign says it's closed," Peter said. There was a sign in front of the entrance that read: Attraction is temporarily closed. We apologize for any inconvenience!
"I did that," Kev said. "I wanted your visit with Hunter to be a special private thing."
"Kev!" Myra said, gently pushing him. "You didn't have to do that!"
"Hey, you want the kids to have a good time, right?" Kev asked.
"I think he did the right thing!" Nikki said.
"See? Kid agrees!" Kev said. "Let's go." Myra rolled her eyes with a smile as the family followed Kev into the entrance. "You guys just keep walking forward, ok?" Kev said. Before anyone could answer, he suddenly slid to the side through a door, disappearing into the darkness.
"Kev!" Myra yelled.
"Kev?" Peter asked. Nikki, however, was continuing on.
"Let's go!" Nikki said. "He told us to keep walking forward." Peter and Myra shared a glance, then followed her. Peter could clearly tell Hunter's paddock was meant to be some sort of horror attraction. There were painted blood stains on the walls, cobwebs, and even wooden statues of certain dinosaurs jumping at them. Peter looked at one of the walls and saw that the stone-material the wall was made of was replaced with a patch of bars. The pup slowly looked into the small window. Suddenly, he saw a red eye stare back at him. Peter nearly jumped, but kept still. He waited for a few moments before a black, scaly muzzle revealed itself in the dim light. Its nostrils were twitching, and it had the sharpest teeth Peter had ever seen.
"Hey, big guy," Peter said in a soft voice. The creature sniffed at the steel bars, identifying his visitor's scent.
"Peter!" Nikki yelled. "Hurry up, ya slowpoke!" Peter jumped to hear his sister's voice. The creature gave a soft snarl, as if to say goodbye, before disappearing into the darkness.
"Coming!" Peter said, rushing to his family.
"What do you think the indoraptor will look like?" Nikki asked. "I have never seen a hybrid before! What if he's part pterodactyl?!"
"Wouldn't he have flown away by now?" Peter asked. "There's no roof."
"Maybe they trained him not to fly away," Nikki said. "You never know." Peter chuckled. His sister seemed to always come up with some wacky story for everything. Finally, the three dogs came to a large, long window. There was a flight of stairs that lead to an upstairs window. Nikki immediately ran upstairs, and her family followed. Nikki and Peter presses their paws to the window, looking around for the hybrid dinosaur. Then, they saw Kev walk out into the paddock. He waved at the dogs, then turned to the large jungle. Kev pulled out what looked like a piece of meat and slowly walked towards the trees.
"Hey, Buddy," Kev said in a soft voice. "I need you to come out here for me. I've got some special people I'd like you to meet."
Peter's eyes widened as the plants began to rustle. He looked closer as a large, scaly animal began to show himself from the jungle habitat. He was stood tall on two feet with long arms and a few spikes down his back. The animal was a shiny black, with a yellow stripe going down either side of his body, and deep crimson eyes.
This was Hunter.
"Good," Kev said. He threw the piece of meat at Hunter, and the dinosaur caught it quickly. "See them?" Kev asked, pointing towards Myra and her pups. "Those are my friends. They're here to say hi."
Hunter raised his body up so that his head was at the same level as the window. Nikki stared in awe as the indoraptor walked closer to them. Hunter seemed to recognize Peter, and he moved his snout closet to the window. Peter pressed his nose against the window, and Hunter did the same. Nikki almost squealed with excitement.
"He likes you," Myra said, walking towards her son. Hunter walked away from the window, making a friendly noise before he dropped to all fours.
"Good boy," Kev said. "Now, can you do a roar for us? Wanna do a roar?" Hunter's jaw opened as a loud roar escaped his mouth. Nikki clapped happily. Even Myra was fascinated by the creature. Hunter began making a raptor-call sound.
"Good boy, Hunter," Kev said. He threw another piece of meat for the dinosaur. Hunter began to circle around Kev, his eyes focused on his trainer. He slowly began rising to his two feet. "Oh, now you wanna be all scary?" Kev said. Hunter turned his body to Kev, raising his tail. Kev stared into the dinosaurs eyes. Then, he stamped his paw. Hunter roared and raced towards him. Myra nearly shrieked as Kev leaped out of the way, and Hunter jumped onto a tree. The Indoraptor turned to Kev and gave a small hissed.
"Wow!" Nikki said. "That was cool!" Hunter let go of the tree and faced Kev.
"You don't scare me," Kev said. Hunter snarled at him. Then, Kev turned to the family of dogs, pulling out a button. "You see this?" he said. "This is gonna open a little trapdoor that's gonna bring out food. I'm gonna push this button, and Hunter is gonna go find it and bring it back."
Nikki's eyes widened as she watched Kev push the button. It took a few moments, but Hunter lifted his head with alarm and raced off into his jungle habitat. Peter watched eagerly, hearing the sounds of Hunter as he searched for the hidden meat. Then, Hunter returned with a large chunk of it in his mouth. Peter and Nikki began clapping and cheering.
"Good Hunter!" Nikki said.
"Very nice," Kev said. "Now go on. You've earned it." Hunter pointed his muzzle up as he swallowed the piece of meat down. "Ready for our little finale?" Kev asked. Hunter just snarled at him. The two began to circle eachother again, then Kev began to do a small bow to the dinosaur. Hunter eyed him for a moment, twitching his head, before dropping to all fours and bowing back to him. Kev walked over to Hunter slowly, then climbed onto his back as the indoraptor stood. Hunter raised his head, then let out a loud, long roar. Mira, Nikki, and Peter all clapped for the dinosaur. Hunter lowered his head, allowing Kev to jump back onto the ground.
"Well, that's Hunter for you," Kev said. "He may look scary, but he's real sweet." The Indoraptor rose back up to his two feet, twitching his head to the side.
"He's amazing!" Nikki yelped. "You trained him real good." Kev smiled and nodded.
"Well, I think we should head on with the rest of the tour," he said. "Say goodbye to him, guys.
"Bye Hunter!" Nikki squeaked. Peter simply waved at the dinosaur. Kev turned and gave Hunter a pat on the nose. Hunter closed his eyes and leaned into his trainer's touch.
"Cya later," Kev said softly. He turned and headed out the door to meet up with the others. Hunter watched him leave, then looked up to see Peter and his family leaving as well.
And then he was alone again.
