Sammy was playing with something which really looked like a very banal eraser. The rain was knocking on the window like little stones and the fog outside seemed to dance around the school house, catching the attention of the bored pupil. Balancing on a wooden chair, he searched the glance of his best friend Fanny. The little red haired girl moved nervously her legs under her school desk. Sammy drew a little man who had the moustache of his teacher on his biology sheet and called silently his friend. Fanny turned her head, curious. The boy erased expressively the man, with slow and dramatic movements. Fanny chuckled and smiled. Satisfied by the reaction of his colleague, he moved again his eraser in the direction of the boring teacher and pretended he was erasing him. Both children laughed and couldn't stop doing so until they heard loud shouts in their ears. Sammy became white when he looked in the direction of the blackboard.
"Where is the teacher?"
The whispering from Fanny wasn't heard by the others. Some pupils began to cry, some just looked outside in the forest, shocked. The rain continued to knock on the window, immune to the distress of the humans.
Sammy looked at his eraser. That couldn't be true. He passed a nervous hand in his black hair. He took his rubber and tried to erase the chair of Louise, the girl who was sitting in front of him. She was adjusting her pink glasses on her nose when she fell on the hard floor with a short shriek. An amazed smile grew on the lips of both children.
Sammy became aware of all the possibilities that would confer this eraser. He stood up, took the arm of Fanny and opened a way in the crowd of hysteric students. They rushed into the door. Fanny stopped to breath, waiting for the impact. Her friend didn't slow down and waved his eraser in the air. The door disappeared in front of them.
"What are you doing?" she asked, trying to hold up the rhythm of the young boy.
"Experimenting the possibilities that God give us!"
"And the teacher...?"
"We will see later! Don't be so boring!"
They arrived in the old hall of the establishment. The frightening statue of the school fonder watched severely the two pupils who were running into the calm atmosphere.
"I have always been afraid of this monument", commented Fanny.
"No worries!"
Sammy wiggled the eraser in front of the cold lord. The stone face faded and disappeared with the whole body. The two friends laughed.
"What have you done?! You little... little bastard!"
Sammy turned his head to see the girl with the pink glasses who had followed them. He erased in a violent movement the stairs on which she was standing.
"Don't call me like that, Louise! Stupid daddy's girl, go to hell!"
He rushed out into the garden, followed by Fanny. They heard a piercing shriek behind them. Fanny wanted to return to help Louise but an impatient glance of Sammy convinced her no to do so. The garden was wet and the humid air made Fanny sneeze noisily. Sammy smiled at her and tried to erase the clouds. The sun appeared suddenly and caressed the young faces with its warm rays. Fanny felt like in a maternal cocoon and sat down on the soft grass. She could feel the pulsing earth under her fingers.
"That's... magic!" she whispered, closing her eyes.
"Isn't it? It's so strange and vivid... I'm so happy to be here with you, and not in the boring classroom!"
Sammy finished his sentence with a pleased sigh. He could finally enjoy life which was meandering in front of him. He recognized an apple tree and erased a branch. The desired fruit fell in his hand. He wanted to give it to Fanny but she became pale, looking behind his shoulders.
He followed her gaze and stared at the old man who was looking at him gently. The director. Sammy clutched his eraser and had a defensive reaction.
"Sammy, give me this eraser, please."
"Louise has told you about it, right?! It's my furniture, I don't have to give it away!"
The director squatted and hold out his hand.
"Do you realize how dangerous it is? My little Sammy... Please."
Sammy went a step further and shouted:
"Let... Let us go! Or I'll erase you too! I won't have any hesitations, I can assure you!"
The old man passed a hand in his grey moustache and hesitated. Sammy began to wave his rubber.
"No! Don't do that!" asked Fanny, her panicked eyes rolled from the boy to the man. "Oh God, please don't!"
"Fanny, it's me or him. Choose." said the boy with a cold voice.
He looked at the few clouds which had just appeared, waiting.
"It's all right, Fanny." smiled the director. He gave a glance of warning to the irritated boy and went back to the school.
"We can't just erase the problems, Sammy."
Sammy hold up his weapon in a victorious position with a cheeky smile on his face.
"Come Fanny! We have to find a place to sleep!"
He bit in the apple to hide his nervousness and showed a confident face.
"You... You don't want to go in the dormitory, do you?" whispered the red haired girl.
Grey clouds appeared in the horizon and the temperature fell. She was shaking with cold until Sammy gave her his jacket.
"They would take the eraser during the night. It's much better to stay together."
"Of course."
When the two friends entered the school, a heavy silence seemed to fall on the regrouped students. A way opened up in front of them and they walked in this compact block of fear and anxiety. Sammy tried not to run. A drop of sweat ran from his face. After what seemed hours, they reached the exit.
"Wow! That was cool! Have you seen how they have looked at us?"
Fanny nodded and sniffed. She followed her friend, in a great turmoil and felt as if the winds of the window had blown through her brain. Their steps echoed in the long corridor. One student came along, saw them and turned away, the face transfigured by a bestial fear. The fear of being erased from the world, without anything from you remaining on earth. Sammy thought one moment he could try to erase the fright he could see everywhere, but the risk was huge and a failure would be dramatic. He was not sure that Fanny would agree.
The two friends arrived in front of the steep staircase which led to the attic. He felt comfortable and safe there. No one would disturb them.
Entering the room, Fanny winced and sat directly on the ground, exhausted by the events. The attic was large but a lot of various objects were scattered in the whole space. A red bike, marbles which had fallen from the shelf, the abstract drawing of the youngest... Memories were hidden behind each corner. A little dust floated in the air and the ticking of an old clock resounded like a threat in Fanny's ears. Sammy opened a wardrobe, searching for mattresses and blankets. He found some, but there were torn and dirty. He promised Fanny to find a better one for the next days. He didn't hear Fanny's murmuring. "There is no future here."
"I'm hungry! Do you want to come with me to take something to eat?"
"You can go, I prefer to stay here, if it is good for you."
Sammy shrugged and went away with his eraser. Fanny felt like a stone had fallen from her heart. She was finally alone. The sound of the rain against the roof rocked her into a profound sleep. When Sammy came back with chunks of fresh bread, he found his only friend in the arms of Morpheus, curled up like a little kitten. He caressed tenderly her face, and wrinkled his fingers in her red hair that he liked so much. After a last loving glance, he went to sleep on the other mattress and extinguished the light. He was about to fall asleep when he remembered that Fanny was afraid of the darkness. He got up and saw her going the stairs down.
"Fanny?"
The girl froze. Her green eyes showed her culpability and stress.
"Give me back my eraser."
"It's... it's not what you think."
"I don't think anything! Give it back!"
"This thing is dangerous, Sammy, don't you see that?"
"It will be even more dangerous in the hands of grown-ups! You have the freedom in your hands! Freedom, Fanny! I'm sure you also want to be free."
"The costs and the risks are too high! No one will like you, they will all be afraid that you erase them in an impulsive act."
Their voices rang in the cold floors. Sammy approached her.
"Someone has to take this responsibility. I will. Please, stay with me Fanny. I will be more careful. I won't erase people, if you don't want it. I promise."
He caught her arm before she could answer and turned it behind her. The little object flopped on the floor. On the wrong side. The ground disappeared and the two children fell in an empty classroom. In spite of the sudden pain in his back, Sammy grasped for the eraser and got it.
"What do you want to do now, Fanny?" he threatened.
"You have changed because of this eraser. I'll take it. All will be fine. I assure you."
She moved forward with an insane smile on her lips and jumped on him. A strange light sparkled in jer green eyes. Sammy instinctively put the eraser in front of him. Fanny screamed in a such a horrific manner that he would never forget it and disappeared. He could see the tears running from her green eyes before she was gone forever.
He felt suddenly alone in the empty room. His respiration accelerated, he fell on his knees, the eyes lost in thought. Warm tears fell on the ground. He couldn't believe what he had just done. He wouldn't hear her laugh, wouldn't see her smile or her cheeky eyes flicker. How he hated the eraser in this moment. He would have liked to throw it out of the window but the damage could have been even more important.
The night passed in what seemed to be an eternity. He didn't notice the wild storm, which shacked the whole establishment. The thunder didn't come to his ears, the lightning didn't come to his eyes. He was like cut from the exterior world.
At dawn, he took a decision. He walked on the floor overwhelmed by the humid air which entered from the broken windows and entered into the director's bureau. A few people had gathered in it and looked at him with an amazed glance. Louise was curious to know what would happen.
"Who wants to have the Eraser?" asked Sammy.
The people saw at each other.
"All of us, naturally." answered the director.
"All right. You just should know one thing. Quite important. The possessor of the eraser has to deal with the fact that he disappears from this world. With other words: if you want to have the power of erasing, you have to understand the fear of being erased. I'll throw this eraser in the air. Catch it if you want it, but be cautious; if you touch the eraser on the wrong side, you'll be erased."
Sammy smiled. A relieved smile. He was sure, Fanny would approve. He would deserve this power. He threw the rubber. No one moved. He sneered and hold out the arm in the direction of the falling eraser.
