12. Forever Young
There was no more time to think about Eero's shocking revelation. No time to discuss it. No time to be angry or bossy.
The moment changed so fast, that Delta doubted she would ever remember exactly what happened.
From behind, the vibration of an explosion as a gun blast split the air followed by the ear piercing screams of Quill and Solaris. Delta flung herself around to see Zoey, struggling on the ground with the bolt of a crossbow thrust through his neck. Blood raged from the wound. His hands flailed erratically grasping at the air and his eyes rolled back in his head.
Delta felt herself scream, but could not hear herself over the high pitched tenor of Quill as she raged in disbelief.
Quill fell to her knees, her fingers digging the ground in white knuckled anguish as she desperately tried to crawl to her little brother.
"NOOOOoooooo---" Her screams echoed through the barren field as the white patches of snow around Zoey's head slowly turned red with his blood. "No Noooo," she gasped gathering another breath to scream.
Jenaro grabbed her as she made a lunge toward his body and Eero grabbed Delta pulling her back from the grisly scene.
Then Eero was yelling. Yelling at Jenaro to go. Delta swung around in Eero's arms and her fist connected with his chin but he was not phased.
"GOOO!" He yelled gutterally.
Jenaro grabbed Quill under his arms as she kicked and screamed and took off into the woods behind them. Solaris ran after them grabbing Quill's hands and pulling back. Jenaro turned and kicked her hard knocking her to the ground.
Solaris had the breath knocked out of her but managed to get up and take chase. Soren hollered and took off after Jenaro, followed by Vaughn who instructed Jrue to stay with Fenix. Renzi, Rayde, Karun and Kaius rushed after them disappearing into the shadowed wood line where Jenaro had gone with Quill.
Eero locked his arm tightly in Delta's and bolted for the trees shouting for the rest of Delta's group to follow him. Delta couldn't stop screaming. She screamed until her throat was raw. She begged Eero between gasps for breath and breathless sobs, that he not leave Zoey's body there but he never gave her as much as a response as what was left of the group, Tia, Fenix, Jrue, Wrennie, Audio, Exton, Karter, Zephy and Freesia all bolted fanning out in several different directions.
The sound of several more gunshots ripped through the area bringing Eero to a sudden halt. He took cover behind a small pile of brush pulling Delta down with him.
"Be quiet," he growled cramming her head down to the ground.
Delta yelped but swallowed her cries holding her breath to keep from screaming more anyway and squeezed her eyes shut to block out her terrified thoughts. If she was about to die she didn't want to see it coming.
Instead she heard the sound of suddenly approaching footsteps followed by a quietly heated shout calling for Eero. She opened her eyes and peered over Eero's shoulder.
From the underbrush three figures emerged, dressed head to toe in some kind of strange camouflage. They stepped forward calculated and careful. All three carried crossbows and Delta's suspicions went sky high. Was it one of these people that killed Zoey?
Eero stood up, waving them over and looking down to Delta with a finger to his lips he cautioned her to be quiet while his other hand motioned her to stay low.
With two fingers one of three, a young asian guy, motioned them to follow indicating that Delta and Eero should watch him. Eero helped Delta to her feet and gave her a nod and a slight smile which she did not return.
She could not see the faces of the other two as they were completely masked. Her heart thumped in her throat as they picked their way through the trees.
Delta did not know what else to do but follow Eero. Everyone else had scattered. Who knew where they might end up.
She could barely understand what had happened. But one thing she knew, Zoey was dead and Quill would certainly never recover from what she had seen.
Another thing she knew, as soon as they were somewhere safe Eero was going to answer some questions.
As if he felt her thoughts and fears, Eero turned slightly and held out his hand to her. She thought strongly about telling him to fuck off, but she was also keen to find her friends and she reluctantly accepted his hand and he helped her down a small incline that led to a small stream. Under the cover of the gently gurgling waters the guy leading them stopped and motioned for everyone to backup against the grassy hill.
Delta followed suit and they stood there for a long time just listening. When Eero was satisfied they hadn't been followed he turned to Delta.
"Delta, I'm sorry about the little boy."
"Zoey. His name was Zoey and you have no idea---," Delta just trailed off. The other two people had taken off their masks and were looking at Delta with expressionless faces.
It was a woman and a young girl, both asian as was the guy. Eero smiled slightly.
"Uh, Delta, this is Lenny, Rachelle, and her daughter Chloe. They are part of my team."
The woman nodded but was stoic, her expression changing very little. Her daughter who looked to be about twelve just stared, saying nothing.
Delta simply nodded back, having no desire to engage in small talk with them.
She wanted answers from Eero, but those would have to wait as he and this Lenny exchanged information and Delta listened anxiously hoping to learn anything she could about what had happened.
"One of my group was killed back there, Lenny. A little boy," Eero shared first.
"Why was a little boy in your group?" Lenny asked straightforwardly.
Eero looked at Delta. "I don't really know yet, but he was with the others."
Lenny looked right at her and she could see the question in his eyes. She found herself looking for a way to defend her decisions but now that she felt forced to explain she saw the error in what she had done.
This Lenny guy waited expectantly.
Delta hung her head in sadness. She had no idea what to say.
