The London Eye
"Come ON Hiccup!" Merida grinned, tugging her boyfriend's hand as the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, all lit up at night came into view as they headed out of Bond Street underground station. "Jack and Punzie are ahead!"
"By two steps Merida," Hiccup shook his head but grinned and allowed Merida to drag him into the light. A souvenir stall was selling plaster models and 'I ♥ London' hoodies that Hiccup caught a glimpse of as they made their way through the crowds of people as they tried to get space on the pavement. Jack and Rapunzel were already taking a selfie on Rapunzel's selfie stick and Merida snatched her camera off of the clasp that was round her neck and held it up, beckoning for Hiccup to join her. He grinned and smiled lopsidedly at the camera as Merida almost got run over by a taxi because she was on the edge of the pavement.
"Be careful!" Hiccup's heart was beating pretty fast now as he tugged Merida close to him so she couldn't fall back. "Jeez Merida, I thought you were gone for good -"
"Me?" Merida laughed. "It'll take more than a car to get rid of me."
"GUYS!" Rapunzel yelled, still clutching the selfie stick. "Get over here!"
The four of them took a couple of slightly blurred pictures before they got a decent one without a ton of other tourists walking behind them. They headed towards the London Eye, just over the river. Hiccup glanced up and gasped. In that moment it hit him, this thing was pretty damn tall. Plus, they were about to go on it. One problem. Hiccup was afraid of heights.
They showed their passes to the man at the front of the queue who scanned them and let them through; Hiccup was still staring in part horror and part wonder at the massive structure above them. They got into the queue pretty quickly and within twenty minutes they were standing at the front, waiting for the next available capsule. Rapunzel and Jack were scrolling through their phones, re-living the day and laughing. Hiccup's knees were trembling and he felt his breathing become fast and off-beat. Merida laughed.
"C'mon Hiccup! You've wanted to go on the Eye for years!"
"Only because it was an incredible feat of mechanical work and -"
"True expertise in design, particularly in the framework," Merida finished his sentence for him. He'd been saying this for so long she could quote his monologues on engineering. "You've been so excited for ages. You'll be fine."
"Yeah," Hiccup glanced up again, gulping. Merida's lips curled into a tiny smile and she slipped her hand in his. She moved closer to him and whispered,
"You've been telling me what an amazing feat of engineering it is for months on end. If it's this good then I promise it'll be okay. D'you trust me?"
Hiccup nodded at her and gave her a small smile back.
Right at that moment the staff ushered them onto the next capsule and Hiccup swore he was going to fall into the Thames but of course he was fine. That didn't stop him trembling though, even when they were in the capsule. He kept looking down and wondering how he could live if they fell. Jack was leaning casually against the doors of the capsule and Hiccup caught a glimpse of the sign written in red behind him.
DO NOT LEAN ON CAPSULE DOORS
"JACK!" Hiccup yell-whispered as to not annoy everyone else in there. "Get away from the doors!"
"Relax Hiccup!" Jack grinned and walked over to the bench in the middle of the small capsule with his hands held up in mock surrender. Merida sighed and walked over to him.
"What are we going to have to do to make you relax?"
Hiccup looked at her with an apologetic look in his eye.
"Merida - I'm sorry. I'm really bad at, well," he gestured to everything around him, "this."
"You're not," Merida held his hand again. Immediately she felt him relax into her touch and she allowed herself to smile internally. "You're great. You just need to relax, that's all."
"But what if it breaks?" Hiccup started to panic. "What if it stops, right at the top, and we all fall into the Thames and -"
The rest of his words were muffled by Merida who had wrapped her arms around his and ran her fingers through his hair. This always calmed him, her touch was like a drug, an antidepressant of some kind.
"Did that help?"
"Y-Yeah," Hiccup stammered slightly. Merida's hair was glowing with the light from the streetlights below them. She looked as if she should be married to the moon.
"I thought it might," she smiled and held both of his hands tight. He smiled weakly at her, kissed her cheek softly then glanced over her shoulder.
"What -?" Merida turned and her breath stopped midway through her throat. Jack was holding up his camera in triumph and Rapunzel was trying not to laugh.
"You didn't," Merida said as she realised what they'd done. "Frost - you're dead."
"You say this every time," Jack grinned and held the camera out of her reach. "Anyway, no violence! You'll get thrown off!"
At these last words Hiccup froze and panic washed over him again. His breathing turned ragged and his eyes went wide. Merida turned to Jack and whispered angrily -
"Now look what you did!"
She shoved Jack in the stomach and walked over to Hiccup. She took hold of his arm and walked him to the edge of the capsule. They were almost at the very top of the Eye now.
"Hiccup," she whispered, "look here. We've been waiting for ages for this. This is the London Eye. Please, can you enjoy it?" She felt for his hand and he gripped on tight, like a lifeline. "For us?"
Hiccup looked at the view. London, lit up with night-lights. Tiny taxis drove across minuscule bridges, Big Ben towered tall, trains made their way across his field of vision every now and then. He marvelled at the sight, it was even better now they were at the top of the Eye. This wasn't so bad actually, in fact it was beautiful. He placed an arm round Merida cautiously and she started slightly.
"You okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine!" she laughed. "I just didn't think you would be."
"I'm fine now," he grinned, "I've got you."
"You're so cheesy."
"I know."
A/N This is dedicated to LennyArts because she gave me the idea for this one-shot when we were actually on the London Eye. I live in England, pretty close to London so we've been quite a few times. I think I got the journey that they took right!
