See the Lights
Play music now. I promise you will never regret it as long as you live.
The girl smiled as she walked the street scattered with leaves. Her boots clacked against the concrete and a breeze sent her red curls soaring around her round rosy face; she only smiled more. There were headphones over her ears and the music made her close her eyes momentarily as she mouthed the words along with Jim Kerr.
Summer's gone, winter's in your eyes.
Memories of the party the night before flooded her mind and she shoved her hands in her pockets. It was irritating above everything else. The way he looked at her; she was sure that he might kiss her.
I can feel the thunderstorms inside.
He didn't.
I wake every morning and the cold winds cover me.
She supposed that was to be expected though. He had a girlfriend for goodness' sake! What, honestly, was she expecting?
All I've got's a ghost of what could be.
Ignoring the sinking feeling inside of her, she continued to walk, kicking a path through the half sodden leaves. Some stuck to her boots. She didn't notice.
If you can see the lights, shine in front of me.
But they had danced. They'd danced and it felt like the world was at her feet. He'd taken her arm and spun her round and she was pressed against his chest and everything that she half-hoped seemed to become real... but they didn't. She kicked the leaves harder.
If you can see the lights, shout out where you'll be.
A familiar figure was approaching her. He had a beanie pulled over his ears and a scarf wrapped tightly about his neck to protect him from the December winds. His eyes lit up like a match being struck the moment he saw her and his walk broke into a run.
I'm in a broken dream, I stare out into space.
Inhaling quickly, her heart began to pound violent tattoos against her chest as he came closer and closer. Her headphones slipped off and fell about her neck, unnoticed.
You know I called you up 'cos nothing takes your place.
She froze in her tracks and he was right in front of her now. The next lines of the song were heard as mumbles over the rustle of the trees.
I've got a heart of stone and it's sinking deep inside.
He cupped her flushing cheeks in his palms and his breath appeared in a haze of vapour before them.
I want to tell you love, that I'm too proud to cry.
And his lips were on hers in a second that lasted a year, and she was gripping his jacket that always smelled of woodsmoke and leather and she was kissing him back and their hands were entwined and his hands were in her hair and on her waist and she couldn't believe this was happening because there was no way he would be doing this if he was in full control of himself, something must be wrong...
If you can see the lights, shine in front of me.
She pulled away, breathing hard and letting go, not daring to meet his gaze.
If you can see the lights, shout out where you'll be.
"Why did you -?" he whispered. One of his hands was still gripping hers. She shook it off.
Summer's gone and I can't tell you lies.
She closed her eyes and couldn't answer.
Oh forgive me love, I'm too proud to cry.
"What did I do wrong?" His eyes were wide and confused. "I'm, I'm sorry - just after yesterday I couldn't stand it any longer, I couldn't go any longer without -"
If you can see the lights, shine in front of me.
"You can't just go around kissing your best friend when you've got a girlfriend!"
If you can see the lights, shout out where you'll be.
"I don't. Not anymore."
Summer's gone and I can't tell you lies.
She stopped in her tracks and turned around.
Forgive me love, I'm too proud to cry.
"It's true." He stepped forward. "She ended it a week ago. I kept meaning to tell you but I just - well, stuff got in the way. Then yesterday with that party and I saw you in that dress and I couldn't speak to you- I was so scared. You looked so - so... I just had to see you."
Too proud to cry.
"This isn't a fleeting thing?" She was whispering now. Words were becoming harder to form in her mouth. "You actually, feel something?" He nodded gently.
"For much longer than I realised."
A/N I've become obsessed with this song right now - I don't care that it was written 20 years ago because damn that melody is beautiful. If you didn't listen to it whilst reading, go back, read it again, and listen to it. I promise you, it'll be the best decision you'll make.
I didn't write all the lyrics but it means you can actually read the story whilst dying from the music. I swear, Simple Minds are sent from heaven. If you like what you heard, look up their greatest hits, Don't You (Forget about Me), Waterfront and Alive and Kicking. I'm guessing you recognise one of those from either The Breakfast Club or Pitch Perfect.
