Car Boots and Maps
"COME ON HICCUP!"
"Calm down Merida -"
"We'll never reach Scotland if you're this slow!"
"We said we'd set off at approximately nine in the morning. Approximately."
"I want to get there on time!"
"And I want to sleep."
"You can sleep in the car. Come on!"
Hiccup laughed to himself quietly and shoved the two suitcases into the boot of the car. This would be the first proper holiday they were going on together since they got together a month ago and Hiccup was certainly looking forward to it. They'd known each other since they were kids but he'd never confessed until they'd both gone to a party, gotten slightly drunk and a game of truth or dare was played. Hiccup had been dared to either kiss someone in the circle or he'd have to tell everyone who he liked. He weighed up the two options and, a burst of confidence surging through him, had gone up to Merida, held her face in his palms and kissed her on the lips softly.
The next day she'd come up to him and asked him why he'd done it. He confessed then that he'd liked her for years and had begun to walk away, not thinking there'd be any hope with her. In turn she'd grabbed his shirt, pulling him to her and silenced his muffled yelp with a kiss planted on his lips. Since then they'd been together for a while, very happily Hiccup might add.
"Get in!" Merida was practically bouncing on the driver's seat she was so excited, causing Hiccup to grin widely as he closed the passenger door. She started the engine and, finally, they started out on their road trip.
About five minutes in Hiccup frowned at the stereo.
"What is this?"
"Coldplay."
"Sounds suicidal."
"Well this is one of the sadder ones."
"Please can we skip it?"
Merida grudgingly skipped it and let the next one play.
"Oh come on," Hiccup groaned. "This is even worse!"
"What was that?"
"It's rubbish!"
"Okay, tell me how it's rubbish."
"It's too repetitive!"
"It's beautiful is what it is!"
"So according to Chris Martin every-thing's yell-ooow?" Hiccup mocked the lead singer's voice, earning an elbow to the ribs. "Ow! That hurt!"
"That's what you get when you insult my music taste." Hiccup was about to argue when he realised his wasn't much better. Merida grinned. "That's what I figured."
"Still rubbish," Hiccup muttered under his breath. He and Merida bickered constantly but honestly he found it funnier above anything else. The make up kisses were worth it anyway.
*Play music now if you want to hear the song they listen to*
After another couple of miles they'd pretty much forgiven each other and slipped in the mash-up CD they'd made for this holiday specifically. They were on an open country road, the roof was open, the sun was shining and they were belting the lyrics as loud as they dared, alternating the separate parts of the songs between them.
"It's not about what you've done, it's about what you're doing -"
"CROSS MY HEART AND I HOPE TO DIIIIEE..."
"It's all about where you goin' no matter where you been -"
"AND I'LL ONLY STAY WITH YOU ONE MORE NIIIIGHT..."
They grinned at each other before dancing to the 'Call Me Maybe' part as much as their seatbelts would allow them. Jessie J belted out of the speakers like a bullet as Merida drove quite a bit faster than the speed limit allowed her to.
"Dirty dancing in the moonlight - take me DOWN like I'm a DOMINO..."
They were having so much fun Hiccup forgot to tell Merida which junction to turn off and she ended up going the wrong way, but neither of them had noticed. It was only when they saw they were heading towards Glasgow instead of Edinburgh that they realised their mistake.
"We should have taken a right turn!"
"Well I wasn't the one reading the map!"
"I couldn't see the sign post!"
"You weren't the one who was supposed to be driving!"
"You said you wanted to drive!"
"That's not the point!"
Merida grumbled as she shifted the gear stick as they turned around, only to notice that it was getting quite cold, dark and they didn't really have much idea where they were. Plus, according to the map, they were now about fifty miles from the camp site.
"Well, what're we supposed to do now?" Hiccup asked as he shifted his glasses up his nose, fumbling with the many pages of the map.
"I wasn't the one map reading," Merida huffed, "how am I supposed to know?"
Hiccup sighed.
"Our best bet is to camp out for the night, in a field somewhere."
"You what?"
"We're ages away from the camp site, it's dark and cold and I want to sleep."
"No, no way," Merida retorted, refusing point blank. "There is no way I'm sleeping in this car..."
*~*~*
"I can't believe I'm sleeping in this car," Merida muttered under her breath. Luckily for them, Hiccup's car had a massive back seat, literally, it was like a bench, except slightly more comfortable. The only problem was that because everything was so tightly packed in the boot, they only managed to unpack one sleeping bag. As a result the pair of them had to squish into just the one, causing a lot of struggling and fumbling in the dark. "Budge up, you're taking all the sleeping bag."
"I am not!" Hiccup retorted.
"You are so."
"Am not."
"Are so."
"Shut up."
"Aw come on, you love me really," Merida grinned up at him. Hiccup pouted and she stole a quick kiss. "Knew it."
"Technically I didn't ask for it."
"You were preparing your lips for it."
"Doesn't mean I wanted it."
"I'll just ignore you for the rest of the night then."
"That'll be quite difficult, considering our current situation."
He was right. It was difficult to turn away in a huff when the person you were trying to get away from was zipped into the same sleeping bag as you and you were pressed against their chest.
"I'll just have to not speak then," Merida smirked. Hiccup softened, grinned and eventually leant down to give her a sleepy kiss, their lips running slightly awry as they held onto each other inside the sleeping bag. She smiled.
"I told you that you loved me."
"Never said that."
"You were the one who kissed me this time."
"Shut up."
Merida only grinned in reply.
A/N I'm trying out some newer, slightly funnier (I hope!) ideas, do you like this new style? I just thought it flowed better - they seem more in character. Let me know what you think!
