Blood Brothers part 1

Merida gripped her dark blue folder tightly as she waited in anticipation outside the drama classroom. She had no idea who was in her new class, she'd just moved here from Burgess because there was some really bad bullying issues at her old school.

This new place, Berk, was nice but she missed the comfort of Dunbroch. They'd had to move in the first place because her father had been offered a new job position which they really couldn't refuse and then Merida's school issues meant they moved a few miles away so she could always keep in contact with her old friends, mainly Punzie.

She sighed. She missed her, badly. Merida pulled a straight face quickly as she saw some of her new classmates lining up too. They looked okay, some better than others. There was about ten of them in total, but, hold up!

Who was that?

Forest green eyes, flecked with gold and hints of hazel. Freckles littered his face and were sprinkled over his beautifully defined cheekbones. He was clutching a black folder to his chest which was covered in doodles from where he'd stuck loose pieces of paper on it.

Now - there was someone she wouldn't mind talking to.

Wait, was he looking at her?!

Merida looked down immediately; sheilding her face with her fiery hair she fiddled with her pen that was in her pocket, just to give herself something to do with her hands.

She glanced up.

He was still looking at her.

A blush crept over her cheeks.

The teacher arrived and they were led into the classroom. They pulled some chairs into a circle and Merida sat slightly awkwardly away from everyone else. The boy was still looking at her from the other side of the room; when she caught him looking he blushed furiously and looked away again. She spotted the name on his folder, Hiccup Haddock.

The new topic was explained to them and scripts were handed out. Merida read the title of the play. Blood Brothers. The teacher suddenly announced that all of them would be auditioning there and then, to decide their roles. This included singing.

The song the girls would have to sing was played and Merida, as the new girl, was elected by everyone else (apart from Hiccup, who just sat there, watching her) to go first. Luckily Merida knew the song before and had started this musical the week before they had to move.

She cleared her throat as the music began and she started to sing, focusing on the props box at the back of the room so she wouldn't have to look into those gorgeous green eyes again. (start music)

"Once I had a husband

You know the sort of chap

I met him at a dance

And how he came on with the chat

He said my eyes were deep blue pools

My skin as soft as snow,"

Merida smiled slightly as she sang and realised Hiccup was looking into her eyes the entire time.

"He told me I was sexier than Marilyn Monroe,"

A blush crept over his cheeks and Merida smiled wider.

"And we went dancing

We went dancing

Then of course, I found

That I was six weeks overdue

We got married at the registry

An’ then we had a “do”

They said the bride was lovelier than Marilyn Monroe

And we went dancing

Yes, we went dancing

Then the baby came along

We called him

Darren Wayne

Then three months on I found that I was

In the club again

An’ though I still fancied dancing

My husband wouldn’t go

With a wife he said was twice the size

Of Marylin Monroe.

No more dancing.

No more dancing.

By the time I was 25,

I looked like 42.

With seven hungry mouths to feed,

And one more nearly due."

The music was slowing now and the notes were hanging for longer. She dragged them for as long as she dared.

"Me husband he walked out on me,

A month or two ago.

For a girl they say,

Who looks a bit like Marilyn Monroe.

And they go dancing.

They go dancing.

Yes, they go dancing.

They go dancing."

The music faded and the class erupted into applause. The teacher was smiling widely.

"Merida, you're Linda. She suits you perfectly. You sang Mrs Johnstone perfectly but Linda, she's perfect for you."

"Thanks Miss," Merida grinned. Hiccup was wearing a small smile, however a girl with a blonde braid was looking at her with a glare Merida could tell was reserved especially for people she wanted to run through with a kitchen knife. Merida didn't let anything affect her and she went to sit down, her face completely neutral. The only seat free was next to Hiccup.

She sat tentatively, acknowledging him with a small nod and the ghost of a smile. He whispered to her:

"You were really good, just then, in your audition."

"Thanks," Merida looked up at him, then down at her script, blushing very slightly.

"You moved from Burgess didn't you?" Hiccup asked.

"Yeah, issues at school," she replied, not looking at him.

"Your name's Merida, right?"

She looked up at him and nodded.

"It's a nice name," Hiccup said innocently and Merida felt touched. Hiccup was called up that very second to avoid anymore awkward conversation. He was singing another song from the script, one he'd already rehearsed, by the looks of it. The song started, and Merida's mind was blown from the beginning.

"If I was like him,

I'd know all the right words.

If I was like him -

I'd know some real birds.

Apart from those in my dreams,

And in magazines.

Just look at his hair.

His hair's dark and wavy,

It just isn't fair.

Mine's the colour of gravy.

Each part of his face,

Is in just the right place,

Is he laughing at me?

At my nose, did he notice?

I should wear a brace,

That i've got halitosis.

When nature picked on me,

She chose to stick on me,

Eyes that don't match,

I've got ears that stand out,

She picked the wrong batch,

When she handed mine out.

And then she attacked me

With permanent acne.

I wish I was a bit like -

Wish that I could score a hit like -

Be just a little bit like -

That guy.

That guy.

I wish that I could be like,

Just a little less like me,

Like the kinda guy I see, like -

That guy.

That guy."

An impressed look was covering their teacher's face, whilst only astonishment covered Merida's. This guy could sing.

"Hiccup, that was truly fantastic. You'll be Mickey, definitely, yes, your acting last year was sublime. You're the perfect Mickey."

Merida skipped though the script and found the character list.

Mickey was one of the main characters, who got married to Linda. Who Merida was playing.

This should be an interesting performance.

A/N I chose this play because I'm doing it in my Drama class at the moment and there are some seriously good parts in it. It's about two brothers, Edward and Mickey who are twins separated at birth. They both call in love with the same girl, Linda. It's a really tragic but also very funny story. I'm looking forward to writing part 2 :)

P.S. I had to read Linda (!)
