LIFE WAS A difficult thing for most people. Caroline thought she had it easy—two loving parents, three sisters and two brothers. She never had to worry about making friends, because her siblings were all she really needed. They were a close knit family.
They spent every weekend in the park, feeding the ducks that you're not supposed to, stuffing themselves with the picnic food their mother spent the morning preparing, and chasing each other on the open field.
Once she turned sixteen, however, everything went downhill, and fast. Her mother had taken her two oldest sisters, twins, to look at colleges. They were both beyond excited for this next step, but the universe had different plans.
While they were touring the campus, a recently fired professor decided to shoot up the place. Her mother and sisters were all murdered in a cold blooded rage.
The news was hard on the rest of the family, but mostly their father. He went from being the most caring person in the world, to neglecting his four remaining children.
They weren't good enough in his eyes, at least not anymore. He used to believe they could quite literally do anything they set their mind to, now nothing seemed to be enough to please him.
Caroline had always admired those who spent their lives saving people. Whether that be in the medical field, or locking up the bad guys. After the college incident, and losing her best friend, her sister Kacy, she figured out what she wanted to do with her life. She was going to join the FBI.
Sofia was something similar. She'd been fascinated with fire since a young age, and when she realised that she could incorporate that into her work, and save lives, she done all the training she possibly could.
Their brother Jacob, the oldest boy, joined the Chicago Police Department. He mostly joined just for the approval from his father—which he didn't receive, but also for himself. He always felt guilty about what happened to his family, even though there was nothing he could have done to prevent it.
Seth was still living with their father. He was still only seventeen, and the rest of the kids had moved all over the country to start their new lives. He was only ever in contact with Caroline, as the other two were too preoccupied for him. He had plans though. Once he graduated he was going to travel.
They were the best versions of themselves,
but how long would that last?
