yaoi fans, yuri fans, etc. (IMPORTANT)
People need to stop make generalizations about yaoi fans.
Let me point out a few things:
1) Yes, SOME yaoi fans objectify gay men.
2) With us living in a heteronormative world, homosexuals are frequently objectified.
3) HOWEVER, NOT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD OBJECTIFIES HOMOSEXUALS.
I, myself, do not think I objectify homosexuals. After all, whether it is in fanfiction or in real life, I recognize that EVERYONE is a person, regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, etc. If you feel that I am objectifying gay men in my stories, please tell me. I would be horrified to not have someone correct my behavior.
Fujoshis: YOU SHOULD NEVER CALL A WOMAN A FUJOSHI! Do you know what fujoshi means in Japanese? IT MEANS TRASHY WOMAN! Even if a woman reads about homosexual relationships, and you find it weird DOES NOT GIVE TO THE RIGHT TO CALL THEM A TRASHY WOMAN!
I AM NOT trying to defend anyone when I say this, but: PEOPLE ARE A PRODUCT OF THEIR CULTURE. If someone lives in a culture (which most of us do) where homosexual relationships are not frequently discussed, objectification WILL HAPPEN. Heck, some people DO NOT EVEN REALIZE WHAT THEY ARE DOING!
So, instead of saying "I hate fujoshis or yaoi fans or yuri fans", EDUCATE THEM! If someone is objectifying homosexuals, TELL THEM WHAT THEY ARE DOING WRONG SO THEY CAN LEARN. DO NOT CALL THEM NAMES! DO NOT SAY MEAN STUFF!
Oh and saying "I hate fujoshis" or "I hate all yaoi fans" is REALLY hurtful. Especially for someone like me who likes it because reading about homosexual relationships since it is a NICE ESCAPE FROM A HETERONORMATIVE WORLD.
I AM SICK OF VARIOUS FORMS OF MEDIA SHOVING STRAIGHT RELATIONSHIPS DOWN MY THROAT.
I AM SICK OF VARIOUS FORMS OF MEDIA KILLING OFF GAY CHARACTERS.
I DO NOT HATE HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS, BUT IT IS NICE TO HAVE A BREAK FROM SEEING THEM.
I'm sorry for the rant... I've just seen some really nasty remarks on the internet lately, which inspired me to write this.
