Chapter 13: Run

Hermione's POV:

I blinked and rolled over. I sat up in bed, yawning. "Morning, Malfoy!" I chirped. I looked at the couch, where I had banished him after that morning, but he wasn't there. Last night's events washed over me and I started crying. I looked at the time. The clock read, "2:30". It was early... really early so I could just roll back over...

I knew that wasn't going to happen. I stood up and got dressed. I picked a Ravenclaw blue shirt that read "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure." I chortled, thinking back to how Harry, Ron, and I used to hunt for Horcruxes. I silently slipped on a pair of black jeans (I'm starting to see why people like them!) and black converse. I put the Hair-Styling hat from Blaise and Theo on. This time, it braided my hair in a French Braid that went from the top right of my head to the bottom left. Two strands were left to frame my face. I applied a layer of light pink gloss and walked out of my bedroom through the grand double-door.

I took out the phone Harry had gotten me and started to set it up. I took the Xbox and set it up with the TV so everybody could play with it. By the time I had finished, it was about 4:30. Lavender came down the stairs in a white shirt and plaid skirt with black tights underneath. She walked over to me. "Morning, 'Mione!" She chirped. We had placed silencing charms around all the rooms so you could yell or do whatever you wanted without bothering anybody.

"Morning." My voice lacked its usual enthusiasm. Huh, that's weird. "Morning!" I tried again. This time, I sounded much more like myself. I smiled a bit.

Lavender walked next to me. "Hey...how're you feeling?"

I grabbed pans and random ingredients, desperately trying to avoid this subject. "Fine. I'm fine." I started whipping up some pancake batter.

"'Mione..." Lavender said. "You don't have to pretend..."

I preheated the oven and put the skillet on. "I'm not pretending!" I muttered harshly.

"'Mione..." Lavender warned. "It's not good to bottle up your emotions..."

I grabbed a cookbook and flipped to pastry recipes. I decided to make scones, a cake, some cookies, and muffins. "I'm not bottling up my emotions!" I snapped.

Lavender sighed. "Then may I help you with this feast you're preparing?" She walked over to the fridge and pulled out some bacon before I could respond. I sighed and flipped the pancakes. I placed them on a plate with a heating charm so they would stay warm. I glanced at the cookbook.

"Could you prepare some fruit?" I asked Lavender nervously. She gave me a lopsided smile.

"Of course." She grabbed an apple and started to slice it. I spooned out the cookies and put them in the oven. Lavender plopped blueberries and apples into the muffin batter. She mixed it and poured it into the molds.

For some reason, I started to cry. I sobbed and wailed. Lavender shoved the muffins in and gave me a tight squeeze. "What's wrong?" She asked me.

I started to season some chicken wings. "I-I don't know!" I wailed to Lavender. "L-last night after D-Draco gave me the r-ring-" I sobbed again.

She pulled the pastries out of the oven before placing something else in. "Take your time, 'Mione. It's ok to cry." She set a timer and pulled me over to the small table.

I gulped and continued, "I ap-appeared n-next to him a-and he k-kissed m-me!" I blew my nose into a tissue. "A-and after l-like a sec-cond he just r-ran aw-way!" I howled the last part.

Lavender rubbed my back understandingly. "We all know that 'Mione. We still don't know where he is, but why does this upset you so much?"

I sniffled and thought about it. "I-I don't kn-know! I j-just was g-getting used to h-him and I-I...I g-guess I j-just wish it did-n't hap-happen!"

The timer dinged. I solemnly walked towards the kitchen and pulled out a turkey. I frowned in confusion. "W-why's there a t-turkey?" I squeaked.

Lavender gave me a hearty laugh. "I guess when you're upset, you sob cook! You made pancakes, cakes, a turkey, chicken wings, some muffins, like three different flavours of scones, you squeezed some orange juice, some watermelon juice, and you also made a fruit salad bowl!" She pointed to a basket made of watermelon with chunks of different fruit in it. "It's quite the talent!"

I chuckled. "I guess it is! Thanks, Lavender...for...you know..." She gave me another tight squeeze.

"Don't mention it, 'Mione."

"DAMN! SMELLS GOOD!" Ron thundered down the stairs. He looked at the mountain of food piled on the table. "BLOODY HELL!" He ran back up the stairs. A couple minutes later, everybody, except Draco, was seated at the table.

"You made all this? At 4:30 in the morning?" Theo asked, purely shocked.

Lavender laughed. "Yes we did!" She passed me a blueberry and apple muffin. "This one's quite the cooking beast!"

I chortled. "Thanks, Lav."

We ate in silence for a bit, the only sound being the scraping of cutlery. "Let's play a game?" Pansy asked everybody. We all nodded.

"We could try the Xbox? I set that up." I stood up and lead everybody to the TV. "Harry taught you boys how to use the TV, right?" The guys all nodded. "Alright, review time!"
________________________________________________________________________________

It had been nearly an hour before we could all play. It was me, Harry, Luna, and Theo in the final dance battle.

"You're going down, losers!" Theo chanted.

"Not if I can help it!" I sneered at him.

"Nah...c'mon...we all know that I'm the best!" Harry stepped forward.

"You're all forgetting I dance every day!" Luna piped up. Ginny clicked the "GO" button and the dance began.

"On the Floor" by J-LO started playing. I was having fun, flailing my arms and swaying my hips as the dancer on the screen did.

Just as I was about to twirl into Harry, the door burst open. Narcissa Malfoy was dragging her son in by the ear. Luna, Theo, Harry, and I kept dancing and the others kept watching us as Draco was being dragged up the stairs. We heard a door slam shut and I twirled back out of Harry's arms. We heard an extra silencing charm being put up before bursting out laughing.

We struck our final posed. I was in a handstand, Harry was standing on top of Blaise who was balancing on one leg and an arm. Luna was in a scorpion pose.

"YES!" I heard Astoria squeal. "YES LUNA!" I fell out of my handstand and checked the score. Luna had beat me by one point! Both boys were several hundred behind us. I huffed and drank a bit of water.

"Nice job, Luna!" I high-fived her.

Malfoy came out of our room, paler than I've ever seen him. Narcissa smoothed out imaginary wrinkles from her skirt before walking down the stairs. "Don't you all have a life class soon?" I checked the clock, it was 10:55! We had class in five minutes!

I bolted out the door and into the classroom. My friends all arrived at the same time as me and sat at the table with me. Draco came in just as class started.

"Hello, class!" Professor Sinistra sang. "Today, you are going to simply talk about your relationship with your spouse. You won't need to make an entry during today's lesson, but you must each write an entry every day until our next class! Begin!" She sat down and started to grade some other work.

I turned towards Malfoy. "So-"

"I'm sorry!" He blurted. "Oh! Um...sorry you go..."

I chuckled awkwardly. "Um, so last night..."

He blushed, a little bit of colour returning to his face. "Y-yeah um last night...look I'm sorry I made a mistake and..." All I heard after that was "blah blah blah". A mistake? How was last night a mistake? "And...I'm sorry." He finished.

I looked around the see all the other couples in our class getting along. Some were snogging and others were cuddled up together. I scooted my chair back. "Yeah..it...was a mistake..." I trailed off and set my chin in my hands, staring at the ceiling. My heart broke. For some reason, I had really enjoyed that kiss. It had lasted no more than a second, but it was far more memorable than any kiss I'd shared with Ron or Viktor! (Scratch that, every kiss with Viktor was memorable. He's the world's most famous seeker!)

"...Granger? We're...supposed to talk." Malfoy put his arm around my shoulder. I recoiled at his touch.

"And what is there to talk about?" I sneered. How dare he! How dare he kiss me, say it was a mistake even though it quite clearly wasn't then put his arm around me as if nothing had happened!

He looked taken aback. "Granger, I said I'm sorry-"

I lifted his arm off my shoulder. "Save it!" I snapped. "It was a mistake, right? I guess that stupid potion made one too, pairing me with you!" I quickly stood up, grabbed my stuff and accidentally knocked a glass of water down.

Everything after that happened in slow motion. Ginny looked at me, eyes wide, knowing I had forgotten to take the potion. She mouthed, "RUN!" to me. I dropped my bags and ran. I started to feel my legs turn into jelly.

Five steps to the door. I can get there!

Four steps to the door. My legs are turning into jello!

Three steps! Oh god, I may not be able to make it!

Two more steps! Run you dang idiot!

Just...one step! R! U! N!

I burst through the classroom door and started to roll down the stairs. I was free! Well...somewhat...

I went crashing down the stairs as the door to the Life classroom burst open. Ginny, Astoria, Malfoy, and Harry came out.

"You two, check over there! We'll see if she's down there!" Ginny called, looking at me for a brief second. I flapped my tail impatiently.

"Damn, I messed up!" Malfoy sprinted down the hall, Harry hot on his tail.

Astoria and Ginny slid down the railing and knelt by my side. "I've never seen your tail, 'Mione!" Astoria panted. "It's beautiful!"

"Fancy a swim?" Ginny joked. I raised my eyebrows. She saw my face and quickly tried to get the idea out of my head. "No, no, no! That was a joke!-"

"Class is almost over...let's go to the Black Lake!" I propped myself up on my elbows and raised my hand above my tail. I started to steam-dry it. Astoria was staring at me in awe.

"I'll...uh...tell the other girls to...get...bathing suits...on..." Astoria gawped.

There was a quiet 'clink!' and I had legs again. I stood up and brushed myself off. "I'll change into one so when I dry off I don't seem suspicious. Let's go!" Ginny groaned and Astoria yipped with glee.
