Chapter 35
After what have been hours of screaming and crying, I had the courage to choke out, "H-Hermione."
My voice was hoarse and I could barely talk. But I had something to do.
"Yes?" She replied politely, approaching me. Her and Ron, who had kept (rather insensitively) telling me that Severus and I had done a good job hiding our relationship, had stayed with me for a while but Ron left not to long ago to assist Harry.
"T-Time Turner."
Hermione gulped. She dug a small hand into her enchanted bag and brought out the golden, spinning necklace.
"It's dangerous, Verita," she told me quietly, "You could end up-"
"It doesn't matter," I whispered, "It doesn't."
Hermione smiled sadly at me, her friendly brown eyes filling with emotion. I felt my own eyes brim with tears again but I blinked them away. I held out a shaking hand and Hermione placed the Time Turner in it.
"You keep it," she mumbled as I put it around my neck, "I haven't used it for a few years anyway."
I managed to laugh even if it was a bit forced. I tried to smile but it was too fake, so instead I just muttered, "Thanks."
Hermione helped me work out the number of turns I'd need before she stepped away from me and wished me luck. I thanked her again, ending our time together with a small hug. She responded by putting her arms around me.
"Goodbye, Verita. I hope everything works out."
"He's not going to die," I whispered back, but it was mostly for myself, "I told him not to say things like that. I should've told him to stay with me."
Hermione just smiled gingerly and left the room in search of her friends. I felt a pang of jealousy that Draco, my only friend, wasn't here to support me, but I knew he'd be preparing for the oncoming war.
The turning of the necklace was extremely tiring and boring, so eventually I got my wand to assist me. I breathed in as I reached the correct number of spins and then I was next to Severus.
Voldemort wasn't here yet.
I rushed to him, yelling, "You have to go!"
Severus blinked at me. It felt wrong. He was dead.
"Verita? What are you doing here?" He asked innocently.
I shook my head vigorously, "Never mind that! Let's go."
I grabbed his hand as tight as my body would allow me to but he didn't budge.
"I've accepted it, Verita. I am unsure of how you got here or why you came, but you need to live," Severus said, planting a soft kiss on my lips, "You need to live for me."
"No! I refuse. I've seen it, I-"
His fingers lifted the Time Turner around my neck, "I see. I must have spoken to you in death."
I began to cry again, frustratedly hitting him in the chest, "You won't even leave so you can spend your life with me? I thought you loved me!"
Something inside of him must have snapped because within seconds we had apparated. I didn't know where we were, but we were certainly far, far away from Voldemort. It was some sort of rocky beach.
We sat down on the stones. It was a little painful but it didn't matter. I noticed tears falling down Severus' cheeks.
"I didn't want to die," he cried out, holding me in his arms, "I want to spend my life with you, but he's going to find me."
"Are you kidding me?" I asked in disbelief, "Severus, we have magic. You can modify yourself. You can change. He'll never know who you are if you look like a completely different wizard, will he?"
Severus' dark eyes widened and he gripped onto my hands in what must've been excitement. His face broke out into a childish smile, "Do you think it will work, Verita?"
"Well, yeah," I told him. It was true. I was faithful. I would go to any lengths just to spend my time with Severus.
"And... You wouldn't mind?"
I tilted my head in confusion. He laughed, and added, "You would still feel for me even if I looked completely different?"
It was my turn to burst into laughter. I was hysterical.
"Severus, as long as you are the same man in here," I said, poking his chest where his heart should be, "I don't care what you look like."
Severus broke out into another grin, "I love you, Verita Winters."
"Perhaps you should become Severus Winters. Maybe I'd love you even more," I joked. I didn't mean marriage, but I certainly didn't complain when Severus knelt down on one knee, right there and then in the rocks and asked me to marry him for real.
I nodded madly, pushing myself into his arms. We fell down to the waterside and laid there as the tide soaked our clothes, our hands intertwined between us.
Severus did change. Before the wedding, he went to some professionals to get his appearance magically modified.
One of his only requests was that he looked like a younger man. This was so that no one got suspicious that I was still with Severus, considering that he would have still been the same age if he just changed his appearance. He was still mentally the same age, and he would still die at the same time he would have before.
So a younger appearance was what Severus got. His skin was smoothed and evened out; he became paler and had short, dark brown hair instead, but his eyes stayed the same under my request. The shape of his nose became slimmer and more rounded at the end. His lips were plumped and his eye shape was stretched out slightly, making those coal eyes bigger and more juvenile. They also changed his body slightly so he was just a little taller and slimmer; it was the body of a young man. His age was changed so that he'd be born a similar year to me.
He looked completely different and only someone who had spent as much time with him as I did would have known he was Severus Snape.
We moved onto that very beach he had apparated us to after discovering that there were houses just a little behind us. We were finally married, we were together.
We may have had children or we might have not, I'll leave that up to your interpretation. I was in love with Severus Snape no matter what, and I knew we would spend the rest of our lives together. And we did.
The End
A/N: Well, this is the end. I know it's a bit unrealistic, but this is a story. Plus, it was either this or Verita dying along with Severus (which I may actually write as an alternate ending. I think it would be interesting). This has been a rather emotional journey, hasn't it? I want to thank everyone who read this story and especially those who commented and voted because it means a lot to me! So thank you.
