Chapter 34

I was sucked into a pool of water. I gasped but then I overheard voices. I saw two silhouettes through some frosty glass and I instantly knew who they were.

I was beside Harry, Hermione and Ron. They couldn't see me but I felt comforted that I wasn't alone whilst watching this scene.

"You have performed extraordinary magic with this wand, my Lord, in the last few hours alone."

My body froze. I thought it was him through the shadows but I didn't want it to be. Was this what he meant?

His voice sent chills down my spine and I felt my cheeks heat up just at his presence.

Severus.

"No, no, I am extraordinary, but the wand resists me," replied the Dark Lord, his voice unwavering and suspicious.

I felt a tear spill down my cheek. I knew all too well why Hermione, Harry and Ron had brought me to the Pensieve.

"There is no wand more powerful. Olivander himself has said." Severus said in response, "Tonight, when the boy comes, it will not fail you. I am sure of it."

Severus spoke again, "It answers to you, and you only."

To anyone else who didn't know him well enough, it would have seemed like he was perfectly accepting of the situation, but to me he was afraid. He knew.

Voldemort's voice was barely a whisper, "Does it?"

Severus' false confusion was evident in his voice, "My Lord?"

Voldemort's footsteps could be heard and I knew it was coming soon, "The wand, does it truly answer to me? You're a clever man, Severus. Surely you must know."

His voice was patronising and cruel. The Dark Lord was silent for a moment before he spoke to Severus again, "Where does its true loyalty lie?"

Severus knew, without a doubt. Yet he continued to pretend he knew nothing and I admired that. It was brave.

"With you, of course, my Lord," Severus told him.

"The Elder wand cannot serve me properly because I am not its true master," Lord Voldemort said hoarsely, "The Elder wand belongs to the wizard who killed its last owner."

He walked closer to Severus. I sucked in a breath I didn't know I was holding as he announced, "You killed Dumbledore, Severus. While you live the Elder wand cannot truly be mine. You've been a good and faithful servant, Severus, but only I can live forever."

The tension was thick in the air. I was just sat there, staring at them blankly. There was nothing I could do. I felt my eyes overfill with tears and I tasted their salty flavour on my lips, but I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I was seeing his last moments.

If only I could have been there properly.

Voldemort struck Severus and he fell heavily against the glass right next to me. I cried out, but no one could hear me.

His treacherous and evil voice came again as he ordered his snake to kill Severus.

The hisses of Nagini rang in my ears and I knew it was something I would remember forever. Severus' groans became quieter and quieter and I thought he was dead.

But then, Voldemort and Nagini were gone. The past Harry, Hermione and Ron rushed in to speak to Severus, but I couldn't bear it.

I cried out, I screamed. The memory wasn't over yet, and I had no idea how to get out of it so I just stayed there, whimpering and balling on the floor.

I shot up as I could overhear Severus' cracking, dying voice, "Take them. Take them. Please."

Harry ordered Hermione to give him something to take whatever Severus was asking them to. I figured it was his tears, for the memory. The memory I was seeing.

"Take them to the Pensieve," he said. I knew he wanted me to see this, so I rushed around the other side of the glass. I choked on my tears as I saw his dying body, pushed up against the glass. Harry was knelt in front of him with the memory in his hand.

"Look at me," Severus spoke softly. I knew he wasn't just speaking to Harry.

He was speaking to me, too.

He turned to Harry, breathlessly saying, "You have your mother's eyes."

He added, "Verita... Winters... The Pensieve."

But then he turned the other way, and I almost felt as if he could see me. Just as his eyes began to close and his life drifted away from me, he said, "I got to spend my last moment with you. In my... heart."

Then he was gone. I screamed as I came out of the memory, collapsing to the floor in front of Harry, Hermione and Ron. The tears flooded down my face like a stream. I couldn't take it.

He was gone, and a part of me had died with him.

A/N: This isn't the end! There will be one more chapter. I'm so sorry for this one. But trust me, you will thank me for the next one.
