Chapter 4
While Levy laughed along with her roommates, directly across the street from their dorm room in the building for the boys' dorms, Gajeel was far from satisfied with his room mates.
Natsu Dragneel, a salmon-haired kid with a stomach the size of a black hole, was trying to provoke Gajeel into a fight to see who was stronger. He seemed determined to duke it out right then and there, but Gajeel was slightly concerned about angering his second room mate.
Laxus Dreyar, a tall, broad-shouldered man with spiky yellow hair, had the air that if you annoyed him you were screwed. His arms were crossed in front of his dark purple shirt, and he was frowning in disapproval at Natsu.
"C'mon," Natsu beckoned to Laxus, "Bet I could beat ya!"
Laxus grabbed Natsu's outstretched hand, flipping the fiery teenager over his shoulder and on to the top of the bunk bed. "There. Stay down if ya know what's good for you."
But Natsu popped back up, attacking again with a satisfied grin.
Gajeel scowled, rolling his eyes. If that idiot tackled him like that, he'd pound him without hesitation. He sat down by the window, glancing out and realized that he could see people walking past the open window to the dorm directly across from them. He recognized the small bluenette he'd seen on the bus the night before. "Hey, saw her last night.
Natsu smirked at him, and Gajeel glowered at him, " On the bus! I saw her on the bus!"
"Yeah, I think that's Levy McGarden. I've seen her picture in the newspaper," Laxus said, glancing out the window to see what they were looking at, "Writes a few articles that I've seen."
"Does she?" Gajeel blinked, and Laxus tossed him a newspaper.
"Here. Educate yourself."
"Hold on," Gajeel said as he found her name beside an article. "She's the one who writes all that hate stuff on Blacksteel! What the hell, she seemed really nice too...."
"Did she now?" Natsu asked for the sole sake of annoying him.
"Shut up!" Gajeel scowled, dropping the newspaper on the twin bed Laxus had claimed, "Dunno why she has to hate Blacksteel so much. All he's tryin' to do is stop the idiots who try to hurt people."
"How do you know that's all he wants to do?" Laxus raised an eyebrow suspiciously, "He wears a mask and doesn't talk to anyone. No one knows what he's tryin' to do."
Gajeel muttered something under his breath, turning away. He knew it would be suspicious to continue to argue about it. He glanced out the window to see Levy leaning out her window into the warm, sunny air. A blonde stuck her head out too, nearly making Levy fall, and both girls dissolved into a fit of giggles.
There was a scuffle behind him, and a thump, and Gajeel turned to see Natsu on the floor with his spirit trailing out of his mouth. "What the hell did you do to him?!" He shouted at Laxus in annoyance.
"He shouldn't jump me if he ain't interested in getting hurt," Laxus shrugged, turning away, then glanced back with a slight frown, "I didn't kill him, did I?"
"Crap, I don't think he's breathing!"
"I almost feel bad."
"You're gonna get us expelled! Hey Fire Face, wake up!"
(Time Skip)
Levy was five minutes early for her first class the next day, and she sat down in her seat in the center front row of the classroom. She pulled her book into her lap, studying it yet again before class started.
More students trickled in, yawning and complaining, but the teacher walked in and the bell rang on time.
Levy was too focused on her book to notice Gajeel walk in, frown at her, then sit down a few seats behind her with Laxus and a recently revived Natsu.
"Okay," their teacher, Jellal Fernandes, said to begin the class, "Today we're going to start with the different systems of the human body, shall we? There are twelve systems in all, can anyone tell me what a few of these might be?"
Levy raised her hand, "There's the muscular, skeletal, digestive, lymphoid, and respiratory systems."
"Yes, very good," Jellal wrote all of these and a few more onto the chalkboard behind him, "Now, for the rest of the year, you'll have your go-to biology partners. Principal Macarov has chosen the pairs, and I'll read them off to you. Leo Patra with Cleo Valdez."
Two people in the back highfived.
"Harry Vorter and Jenny Wesly. Laxus Dreyar with Mirajane Strauss. Annabelle Chase and Peter Johnson. Kat Nis and Pete Ah. Natsu Dragneel with Lucy Heartfilia, Gray Fullbuster with Juvia Lockser. Era Gorn with Eo Win."
Levy tapped her pencil absently on her desk, vaguely listening for her name. Then she heard it:
"Levy McGarden with Gajeel Redfox. "
Wait... Gajeel? Wasn't that the name of the person she'd met on the bus the night before? Levy twisted around to see him, but frowned to see his glare was far from friendly. So she gave him a meek wave and turned back around to face Jellal, who continued to read off names from a list.
The rest of the class passed uneventfully, and at the end, Jellal said, "For homework, you have to fill out this study guide, and write up a one page essay on the meaning of death and if you agree with it. Also, for your first lab, you will measure your partner and they will measure you. Record your measurements and write about possible comparisons, such as the arm span is equal if not similar to your height. Due by next Monday."
Levy diligently recorded all of this in her folder, and stood up as the bell rang. Finally. Time for lunch!!
