Chapter 15

Levy could hardly sit still during class the next day. She squirmed in her chair, her mind still swirling from last night's events. Part of her wanted to be mad at Gajeel for not telling her he was Blacksteel, but the other part of her was relieved. Now she knew why she had been so torn between them-- she had fallen in love with the same person. And she had fallen for him twice.

She barely cared about the lecture the teacher was giving the class, her chin in her hand as she stared out of the window. He hadn't been in biology earlier, and she wondered if he was avoiding her. She hoped not.

Time seemed to be passing at a crawl for a change. Usually classes went by pretty quickly and she had no trouble waiting for lunch. But the clock seemed to want to tick as slow as possible today. And it had no mercy.

By the time the bell rang, Levy was all ready to leave. She stood up and swept out of the room before the bell could even stop in its alarm. She headed straight for the lockers, deciding to collect her books for her next class before heading to the cafeteria.

However, when she arrived at her locker, there was a folded up note stuck to it with a tiny piece of tape. She blinked, glancing around to see if anyone was in the hallway with her. It was empty.

She unfolded the note, reading the cramped and messy handwriting she knew was Gajeel's.

"Meet me on the roof during lunch -- Gajeel"

Levy smiled, tucking the note carefully in her pocket. She crammed her things into her locker, not bothering to stack her books neatly like usual. Then she took off at a run down the empty halls to the stairs.

She pushed open the door to the roof, smiling in relief to see Gajeel's back to her as he stared down at the ground so far below. His long, black hair was blowing in the light breeze that brushed her skin, and she walked towards him uncertainly. Why had he called her up here? For good or bad?

She tapped his shoulder, and he nodded his head to acknowledge that he knew she was there. She frowned, crossing her arms over her torso. "Don't tell me you're mad! I--"

He raked a hand through his hair as he turned to face her. "I ain't mad, shrimp. But why the hell wouldn't you tell me?"

She jabbed a finger into his chest defiantly. "Well, you didn't exactly tell me you were the vigilante! If you'd told me, I wouldn't have been so torn up trying to figure out which one to choose!"

"I couldn't exactly just walk up to you and say 'hey! I'm Blacksteel, the guy you bash in all of your newspaper articles'!"

      "Well, you could've--"

"Wait," his studded brow furrowed as he suddenly considered what she had said. "Why would you choose?"

Levy broke off, taken aback. "What?"

"You said you had to figure out which one you would choose," Gajeel repeated, curiosity crossing his dark eyes as he lowered his head to make eye contact. "Why would you have to choose?"

Levy glanced away uncomfortably, rubbing her arm. "Well, um... you can't exactly love two people, can you?"

He stared at her, and she snorted.

"Whatever! I'm not done yelling at you for not telling me you were Blacksteel!" She opened her mouth to continue scolding, but broke off as he gripped her shoulders beneath his scarred hands.

"You love Blacksteel?" His eyes were suddenly serious, and she felt her face burn like a stove top.

"Wh-why do you think I kissed him?" She huffed, avoiding looking him in the eye.

"But that was me." Gajeel tilted his head to the side as he studied her face. She determinedly turned her head, refusing to look at his face. She could feel the heat climbing higher into her cheeks as he continued to stare at her.

"I'm aware," she managed to reply.

"So you... you love me?" Gajeel's face finally took on a slightly red hue, his grip on her shoulders tightening. She looked up in time to see a flicker of doubt cross his face.

"I kissed you, didn't I?" She mumbled, glancing down again to stare at her feet. "I wouldn't have done it if I didn't. You don't exactly kiss people you don't love."

She felt his hand slide beneath her chin, and her head was tilted back as he rested his forehead against hers. "Then I guess this is long overdue."

Levy stiffened in shock as he closed the gap between them, closing his eyes as he kissed her gently. She slowly relaxed, closing her eyes and allowing him to pull her closer to him. She tilted her head to the side to deepen the kiss, sinking into his warmth with a small smile spreading across her lips.

He broke the kiss a moment later, face red. He stepped away quickly, blushing and rubbing the back of his neck. "S-sorry, I just..."

She smiled warmly up at him. "I know."

There was a long silence between them, then Levy stared down at her hands. "Well... Shadow Script got her revenge. I guess she's gone now."

"Well, if you want," Gajeel began, scratching his cheek. "You could be my sidekick or something."

She elbowed him playfully in the stomach, a small smile creeping up her face. "You could be the sidekick. I'm stronger than you anyway." She laughed at the indignant look on his face.

"No way! I'm stronger, you be the sidekick"

She smiled teasingly at him. "Prove it! But in the meantime, you can be the sidekick."

He snorted with a laugh, ruffling her hair with a gloved hand. "Hell no. How 'bout we both just team up?"

     "Hm... no."

     "Levy! I'm tryin' to compromise!"

      "Great! Be the sidekick."

"Yeah right, I ain't gonna be the--" he broke off as she leaned up, giving him a small kiss on the mouth. He looked startled, and she laughed, taking his hand.

      "Were you saying something?"

"Gihi, I was just thinkin' we could be a team," he pulled her closer to him. "After all, it worked well in biology class."

Levy pretended to think this over, then smiled. "Alright. I think I can work with that."

He grinned at her, patting her head affectionately. His grin faded, and he rubbed the back of his neck with an awkward look at her. "But, uh... when we ain't heroes or vigilantes or whatever... maybe you'd like to grab lunch with me or somethin' sometime, I dunno..."

"Are you asking me out?" Levy clasped her hands behind her back as she smiled at him.

He blushed, "No-- well, uh... yeah, I guess I am. Is that... cool with you?"

Levy gave his hand an affectionate squeeze. "I'd like that, yes." She rested her head against his shoulder with a warm smile. "Call me tomorrow and we'll set something up, okay?"

"Yeah," he cracked a grin, ruffling her cerulean hair, "That'd be cool."

She grinned back, but a beeping sound interrupted them. Gajeel pulled his set of headphones from his pocket, putting it against his ear. "Crap, there's an emergency by the bank. You wanna both go get this one?"

"Of course!" Levy grinned at him, resting a hand on her hip. "After all, we're heroes. What could happen?"

And that's the end!! Hope you all liked it, and thank you SO much for sticking around to the finish. You guys are amazing supporters, and I appreciate every single one of you so much! Thanks for encouraging me to write another book. Hope to see you soon!
