Chapter 12

To clear something up-- in one of the chapters (maybe five, I think) Levy called Blacksteel Gajeel as if she knew who he was. That was actually an error on my part, writing Gajeel instead of Blacksteel. She doesn't know who he is, so I apologize over and over for the mistake. So without further ado, the actual story.

When Levy got back to her dorms, she entered in as quietly as possible, trying to hide the bubbly feeling in her stomach. But Mira caught a glimpse of her face and was cued in immediately. "Ooh, Levy, where were you?"

Lucy lifted her head from the textbook she had been attempting to read, but had gotten bored and taken to doodling in the corner. "Yeah, where did you go? It's so boring in here without you."

"Well..." Levy sat down on her bed, wondering if she should carry through and ask. Before she could actually decide, the words were out of her mouth "Can I... ask for some advice?"

Lucy slid off her bed to sit beside Levy. "Of course, what can we do?"

Levy poked the tips of her index fingers together, not looking at either of them. "Well... Gajeel might have... well, he might've kissed me."

There was a moment of dead silence, and she looked up with a cringe, waiting for the response. Then she clapped her hands over her ears as they exploded "WHAAAAAT?!!!!! HE KISSED YOU?!!!!"

They fell silent long enough for her to nod, then they went back into freak out mode. Mira was dancing around with delighted exclamations, and Lucy just looked shocked. She grabbed Levy's hands in hers, "Well? Do you like him?"

"I don't actually know..." Levy continued, ducking beneath the spray of saliva as Mirajane gasped dramatically.

"How do you not know? Either you like him or you don't!!"

Levy sighed, turning her eyes to the window beside her bed. She let her shoulders slump as she raked back the loose strands that had fallen from her headband. "I think I... sort of like someone else? But at the same time... I do like him. So it's just..."

Lucy shoved Mira away as the white-haired model gasped again. "Levy, don't worry about it. I've been told the heart knows what it's doing even if it confuses your head. I mean, look at me! I'm in love with a hot headed idiot!"

Levy managed a laugh, but Mira was watching her with narrow eyes. "No one's even going to question who the other guy she likes is?"

Levy shook her head, "I'd rather not talk about it. I think I'm going to go to the roof to clear my head, okay?"

"Go for it, girl," Lucy gave her a thumbs up, "If you need us for anything, we're not exactly going anywhere."

Levy got to her feet, smiling at her friends. "Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on that soon." She opened the door, giving Lucy one last smile before bolting to the stairs. The roof had become her chill zone since she had gone there. It was a quiet place she could change into Shadow Script without worrying about being walked in on. And it was isolated, a piece of calm in the turmoil of college and vigilante life.

She reached the top less than a few minutes later, and she was startled to see just the person she wanted to at the edge, staring down at the city.

     "Blacksteel!"

The masked man paused, slowly turning around to face her. "Levy?" He sounded as if he was grinning, and he turned from the edge towards her. She wished she could see the grin beneath his mask, but she pushed this away. Every hero needed an identity. And she didn't want to take that from him.

"You okay?" Blacksteel took another step towards her. "You look kinda tired."

"I am, but... can I ask you a bit of a personal question?"

He paused in his advance, the silver face of his mask glinting in the moonlight. "Sure... I guess if you want. What is it?"

"Have you ever been kissed before?" Levy asked, and he stiffened. There was a long pause, then he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"I-I... kinda. You... uh, you kinda kissed me last time you saw me." He tapped the cheek of his mask, and she flushed, remembering. Her blush made her even cuter than usual, and he had to look away before saying something stupid.

"W-well, yes," she mumbled, looking away as well. "But I meant besides me."

"Nah," Blacksteel muttered, but curiosity was prickling in his stomach so strongly he had to ask, "Does this have something to do with the, uh... random guy you kissed earlier?"

Her flush deepened. "O-oh, you saw that? H-he kissed me first, and I..."

Blacksteel felt a twinge of disappointment, "Was it really that bad?"

"O-oh, no," she shook her head, and he had to withhold a sigh of relief. "But the thing is... I think I like someone else."

The sigh was replaced with horror. If that was true, then he had made a horrible mistake. Kissing her when she didn't feel the same for him... that was a busload of trouble he didn't want to suffer through. He didn't know how to respond, and he didn't trust himself to. He kept quiet so she could continue.

"But at the same time, I kinda like him too," Levy admitted, rubbing her hands together nervously. "He's nice once you get to know him, he's got a bit of a soft side, and he's pretty cool too... Lucy says the heart knows what it's doing, but how can it when it's making me like two different people?"

Blacksteel felt a prickle of guilt, and he stared at her for a moment. "Well... who's the guy you like?"

She blushed furiously, tugging at the hem of her shirt to avoid his eyes.  "I... well, it's... it's complicated."

"Who is it?" he pressed, "I ain't gonna tell anyone."

"You won't need to... he'll already know." Levy glanced away uncomfortably, rubbing her arms with her head down.

Blacksteel paused, thinking this through as his brow furrowed. "H-hold on... you don't... you don't mean me?" He stared at her in shock, his heart racing as she gave him a tiny, apologetic nod in confirmation.

She glanced away, chewing her lip. "I-I'm sorry."

Blacksteel stared at her, weighing his odds. "No, don't apologize." he shifted closer, feeling his face burn beneath the mask. "'Cause I kinda like ya too. A lot."

It was her turn to look surprised, and her mouth fell open. She stared at him, and he suddenly realized that this was the perfect time to tell her. He could show her who he really was, clear her cluttered mind and tell the truth. But he hadn't told anyone before... would she be mad at him?

His hands clenched into fists, and he inhaled deeply. He wanted to tell her. Only time would tell if he could find the right words to tell the truth.
