Chapter 8: Help From New Friends

"Blast! I could kill that Namek for destroying our scouters." Zarbon muttered to himself as he jetted over the landscape, searching for another Namekian village. "Too bad he's already dead..."

Just then, a light in the distance caught his eye as he stopped, watching curiously as something, or rather someone, was approaching fast. His expression changed to that of surprise as he realized who it was, holding his ground as the man flying his way stopped abruptly.

"Vegeta..."

"We finally meet again Zarbon." Vegeta rasped, looking very smug as he stared down at the teal alien in front of him. "What a surprise... I've already disposed of that useless Dodoria... Now I plan to do the same thing to you."

"What?! There's no way you beat Dodoria by yourself!" Zarbon argued, staring at him in disbelief as Vegeta laughed.

"Whatever you say Zarbon."

"I say you're lying!"

"It's easy enough to prove..." The Saiyan Prince teased while getting into a fighting stance. "If you don't believe me, why don't you try me for yourself?"

"You... You're a fool! You should know better than to disobey Frieza!"

"Yes, so I've heard... But unlike you, I've never been suited to the life of a mindless follower. I'm through taking orders! I'm through cowering before Frieza like a dog!" Vegeta proclaimed while glaring at Zarbon fiercely. "And I intend to see him grovel at my feet as soon as I've made my wish."

"You mean with the dragonballs..."

"The winds of change are blowing Zarbon... Soon the power of immortality will be mine. And with it, I will rule this galaxy forever!"

"You're dreaming!" Zarbon argued, wanting more than anything to say something that would wipe that cocky smirk off the Saiyan's face. "Frieza already has five dragonballs. It won't take us long to find the rest!"

"Please, you're blind without your scouters! That's a liability I don't share. My powers have improved in more ways than you can ever imagine."

"Hmpf. So you've learned some new tricks then..." Zarbon said, sounding unimpressed. "It doesn't change a thing. What makes you think your abilities even hold a candle to Frieza's?"

Vegeta growled, sending the other man a deadly glare. "I'd say you already know the answer to that question... Dodoria did too. And before he died, he told me everything! Frieza fears the Saiyans, which means he's afraid of me."

"Don't flatter yourself." Zarbon chuckled condescendingly, "What Frieza feared was the entire Saiyan race rising up against him. All alone you're no threat to anyone."

"Well, we'll see..." Vegeta smirked before vanishing, appearing behind Zarbon's back as he blocked a punch that was aimed at his face. Zarbon appeared shocked at how fast he was just as the Saiyan grabbed his arm, tossing him up a few feet before he recovered. Zarbon growled, holding out his hand as he yelled, putting an enormous amount of power behind a blast headed directly for Vegeta.

The Saiyan Prince merely deflected the attack, sending the beam flying off course as it exploded, making the entire area shake as huge clouds of smoke and debris appeared in the distance.

Vegeta wasted no time, rushing forward as he launched a punch straight at Zarbon's face, catching him off guard and sending him flying back. He dodged every punch and kick Zarbon retaliated with effortlessly, laughing as the other man was clearly becoming frustrated. Once again, Vegeta vanished, as he reappeared above Zarbon's head while upside down, flipping over swiftly before delivering a kick that sent him sailing towards the ground.

Zarbon landed with as much grace as he could, his eyes going wide as a kick to his back sent him skidding across the dirt. He coughed a bit, struggling to get up as Vegeta laughed in the distance. "Well, I think I've proved my point Zarbon!" The Saiyan mocked, feeling truly invincible.

"Well, I have to admit. You do impress me Vegeta..." Zarbon murmured, standing up and turning to face the dark haired man as he wiped a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth. "Your fighting skills have come a long way since the last time we met, but not quite far enough... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha..."

"So, I'm not strong enough to beat you, huh?" Vegeta countered, still sounding pretty sure of himself. "Funny, because that's what I thought I was doing... Oh, wait, unless you're trying to tell me you've been holding back?"

"That's right. You've figured it out... I knew you would."

"Ha! You crack me up!" Vegeta howled as he threw his head back in amusement, truly believing Zarbon was just bluffing.

"Go ahead. Laugh if you want." Zarbon replied, "I'm about to wipe that stupid smile right off your face! It's time I showed you my true power, so watch closely. This isn't something I like to do very often... You ever hear the saying beauty is only skin deep? Well, right now, you're only seeing the beauty..."

"Is that so? Well, pardon me if I hadn't noticed." Vegeta said sarcastically as he continued to laugh, "What are you going to do? Start making faces at me and hope you scare me away? It's hopeless."

"Now, you're being much too hasty Vegeta. Patience... You don't want to spoil the surprise... And it's a good one!"

The wind around them began to pick up, blowing ominously as the two continued to stare each other down.

"Let's see it!" Vegeta shouted, ready to end this once and for all.

"Alright then. So be it. But consider yourself warned! Uaaaa!" Zarbon shouted as his muscles expanded, becoming more beastly as his whole body grew larger. Even his face had changed from it's normally human-like appearance, to something that resembled a lizard or some other reptile. His skin and hair were the same but he was easily twice as big, snarling wildly as he stared down the shorter man.

"Huh! What the!?"

"As I said," Zarbon chuckled, his voice deeper and more scratchy due to his transformation. "You only saw the beauty side of me before, now with great pleasure, I introduce you to the beast!"

He rushed forward, kneeing Vegeta in the gut before punching him across the face and following it up with a volley of attacks that the Saiyan never saw coming. He tossed him around like a rag doll before grabbing his ankle and slamming him into the ground once more. Just as Vegeta tried to get up, Zarbon grabbed both sides of his face, headbutting him over and over again as blood began to leak from his forehead. The Saiyan Prince cried out in anguish as Zarbon dropped him, watching with delight as he collapsed at his feet for a moment.

Vegeta stood up on shaky legs, growling before launching himself at the teal monster as the two traded blows at an incredible speed. This time however, Vegeta was the one receiving the majority of the punches and kicks. Before he could recover, Zarbon delivered another brutal knee to Vegeta's stomach, knocking the wind out of him before literally sending him flying through part of the mountainside.

The Saiyan fought for air, looking up through one eye as Zarbon landed gracefully in front of him, sending him a boastful grin before speaking. "And you wouldn't believe me when I told you you couldn't win!"

Now it was Zarbon's turn to be condescending as he watched in satisfaction while the 'Prince of all Saiyans' tried to get up. Vegeta bared his teeth as he blasted forward, using the last of his strength as he engaged him once again in hand to hand combat. Zarbon dodged his attacks easily, smirking before appearing behind the Saiyan as he placed him in a choke hold.

"Enough of this... I'm through toying with you. It's time to end this little game right now!"

Zarbon flew up a good distance before turning around and rocketing towards the ground head first. "It's lights out for you Vegeta!" He cackled, as the shorter man struggled in his grip before he sent him deep into the rocks with a yell. Dust and fragments of the now destroyed mountain scattered across the field as Zarbon smirked victoriously. A large crater was all that was left as the water from the lakes around it began rushing forward, filling the hole that was now Vegeta's grave quickly.

"Heh, perfect. If he was somehow still breathing after that, he won't be for long..." Zarbon commented, returning to his human form while continuing to stare at the water intently. "It serves him right for making me go to all the trouble of transforming. Now, I'd better get back to Frieza. He'll want to hear this news..."

...

Back at Bulma's hideout...

...

"And that's what happened..." Krillin finished while Bulma stared at him with wide eyes.

"W-wow..."

Luna was listening to him retell the story as she munched on a piece of strawberry cake Bulma had given her. It was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted and she just couldn't stop eating it. She was rather hungry and the food on Frieza's ship was less than desirable...

"So... Luna..." Bulma asked, wondering if it was really alright to bring up the topic. "How did you get involved with someone like Frieza in the first place?"

Luna nearly choked on the bite of cake she was swallowing as she patted on her chest a few times, clearing her throat while noticing that everyone was staring at her. "Um, well..." She began nervously, unsure of how much information she wanted to divulge. "Frieza attacked my planet... Him and his men came one day and started killing people... I don't know why. I was younger at the time and didn't understand what evil truly was, as the inhabitants of our world were peaceful for the most part... My mother..." Luna mumbled, her voice cracking a bit as she tried her hardest to continue. "She was injured and I-I tried to heal her... That's when I met Frieza..."

She paused for a moment, her tone of voice sounding more angry now than upset. "He saw what I was... The kind of powers I had... And he decided that I would be a useful servant for him. He killed my mother right in front of my eyes and I couldn't do anything to stop him... That was four years ago-"

"You've been on a ship with those guys for four years?!" Gohan interrupted, his eyes wide as he thought about what a horrible fate that would be.

"Oh, Luna..." Bulma whispered, regretting her question as she stared at the purple haired girl sadly. "I'm so sorry..."

"I wanted to get my revenge..." Luna admitted, somehow feeling better now that she was able to tell someone her story. "I thought that if I could make Frieza believe I was loyal to him... Make him think that he could trust me... Maybe I would be able to find some sort of weakness of his that I could exploit to take him down. In all my years of service to that monster... I discovered nothing that would help me or anyone else..." She stared down at the table in front of her, memories of the hell she had been through playing before her eyes. "I... I let him use me to destroy other people's home... Just like he did mine..."

Bulma was staring at her with an unreadable expression as Dende grabbed her hand, breaking her out of her trance. She jumped, looking down at the child before sending him a small smile, thankful for the distraction as everyone fell into an awkward silence.

"I think what you did was really brave..." Krillin said finally, surprising Luna as she stared at the bald man curiously. "Most people would have just given up," He explained, "But you stayed strong even when everything you ever knew was taken from you... And you didn't let that darkness taint your heart... You did what was right even when you were unsure about what the consequences might be..."

Luna blushed as she wiped away a tear that had yet to fall, smiling a bit as she felt blessed in this moment to be surrounded by good people. "Thank you... That means more to me than you know..."

"Don't worry Luna!" Bulma cheered, wanting desperately to raise everyone's morale. "Goku will be here soon and he'll make Frieza pay for everything he's done!"

The purple haired girl nodded, thankful for the other woman's enthusiasm as she felt the weight on her shoulders get a bit lighter now that some of her past was out in the open. Just as Bulma was about to say something else, Krillin and Gohan looked at each other suddenly, jumping out of their seats before rushing outside.

"W-what is it you guys?!" Bulma questioned in a panicked tone, dashing out after them as Luna and Dende followed suit.

"Did they find us? Is someone coming?!" Bulma cried as Luna watched Gohan and Krillin just standing there, a mixture of shock and anger playing out across their faces.

"N-no..." Krillin explained, sounding sincerely troubled as Gohan continued to stare off into the distance with his fists clenched. "It's a whole bunch of power levels... And they're all fading!"

"Huh?" Bulma looked back and forth between the two, very confused.

"It means somewhere out there... The Nameks are dying!" Gohan explained, growling as he felt more of their energies flicker out.

Dende gasped, looking terrified as Luna reached out, placing a hand on his shoulder while moving to stand next to him.

"It's Vegeta..." Krillin said matter of factly. "He's attacking one of the villages... That bastard! Those Nameks never even had a chance..."

"Why... He's just an animal, isn't he!" The blue haired woman seethed, getting angry as well.

"Yeah..." Krillin agreed, "And from the looks of it, now he knows how to sense power levels without a scouter... So we're stuck. If we try to fly anywhere, he'll find us. I don't know if he's working with Frieza or not, but if either one of them gets their hands on all seven dragonballs... We're gonna be in some serious trouble... I don't think anyone will be able to stand up to them!"

"We may not be able to fight them directly," Bulma said, sounding more determined as she went on. "But if we can manage to find just one of the dragonballs and hide it, we could stop them from making a wish-"

"No, that's not enough..." Gohan interrupted, "It won't stop them from looking for it... They'll kill every Namek on this planet until they find it!"

"O-oh no..." Dende inched closer to Luna subconsciously as she listened, unsure of what to say as she was slowly discovering more and more about these mysterious dragonballs.

So if you can gather all seven... She realized, understanding now why Frieza and Vegeta both wanted to get their hands on them. You can make a wish... Gohan, Krillin and Bulma want to wish their friends back from the dead... Can something like that really be possible? Her stomach dropped as she thought about what kind of wish Frieza or Vegeta might make, knowing in her heart that it would surely be something that only served their best interests.

"What are we supposed to do?" Krillin asked, sounding defeated as he sank to his knees. "I mean, Vegeta on his own is bad enough! But Vegeta and Frieza together... Man, I don't even know if Goku's strong enough to fight them both!" He growled, shaking in frustration as he punched the ground. "Dammit! I should have killed Vegeta when I had the chance..." He finished in a whisper.

"I... I still don't understand..." Dende said, stepping away from Luna as everyone turned to look at him. "Who are you? You seem to know everything about the dragonballs and these evil men who attack my people..." He continued shakily, tears in his eyes as he stared at all of them desperately. "Please... Please tell me that you've come here to help us!"

"Dende..." Gohan said sadly, looking at the shaking child with pity as Krillin began to tell the boy their story.

This was almost more than Luna could bare. She listened to their story, thinking to herself as he spoke. She could relate to the Namekian so much... Both of them had their families taken from them by Frieza and his men... Both of them saw it happen right before their eyes. She could understand why he would be upset and untrusting...

"So we thought if we came to Kami's home planet, there might be another set of dragonballs here..." Krillin explained, hoping that Dende could sympathize with them. "We hoped we'd be able to wish all of our friends that Vegeta and his partner killed back to life... That's all we're trying to do."

Gohan nodded seriously as Dende seemed to be thinking about his words.

Luna knew exactly who they were talking about. Vegeta and Nappa... She thought, remembering the large man who was always at the Prince's side. I was aiding them both in destroying these people's friends and family... This whole time... They've all been so nice to me and I had a hand in hurting them... Luna looked away from their conversation, while the cake she had eaten earlier felt like a rock in her stomach.

"Not only that," Bulma added while looking at Dende. "If our wish is granted, it means the Earth's dragonballs will come back too."

"So your world has been terrorized by these men too..." Dende realized sadly, looking down for a moment before continuing with a new found strength. "Then we must fight them! Together! And I know someone who can help!"

"Really?" Luna questioned, hopeful about getting the chance to right some of her wrongdoings as Dende nodded to her.

"Yes... I must take you to see the eldest Namek!"
