Chapter 23: A New Start
"What... Where am I?" Luna mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she woke up slowly, taking in her surroundings.
She was in bed in a small room that was plain for the most part. The only thing special about it was the window next to her where she could see a cloudy blue sky shining through. On a small table next to that were her tattered clothes and what was left of the Saiyan armor Vegeta had given her.
"What?!" She gasped, lifting the sheet and looking down before sighing in relief to see that she wasn't naked...
She grasped her pendant that was thankfully, still hanging around her neck as she noticed she seemed to wearing some sort of plain white dress. Luna hopped out of bed, intent on finding out just what the hell was going on as she made her way out the door, peering down the hallway before trying to find her way through the maze of corridors.
"This place is huge..." She mumbled to herself, looking around as she made her way down the hall until a voice from behind startled her.
"Hello there! You must be Luna!" A middle aged man with lavender hair and glasses spoke, smiling at her as he held out his hand. "I'm Dr. Breifs, Bulma's father... Pleasure to meet you my dear!"
Luna eyed him for a moment before stepping forward and grasping his hand timidly, feeling a bit uncomfortable the way he seemed to be analyzing her.
"Fascinating..." He said, continuing to look her up and down before he spoke again. "I didn't know there were any Acaiian's left in the universe... I thought your people were extinct! Would you mind if I ran some tests? I'll just need a bit of your hair and your blood... Maybe some skin cells-"
"DAD!" Bulma shouted, interrupting the man as she walked towards where Luna stood wide eyed, not sure of what to say. "Don't scare her! Jeez..."
"Ah, yes, yes... I'm sure there will be time for all that later... That is, if I have your permission to perform the research?" He said quickly, glancing back at Luna who seemed very hesitant to give him an answer.
"Um, I... I don't-"
"Don't worry about that right now!" Bulma said, making Luna sigh in relief as she grabbed her arm while starting to lead her down the hall and away from her father.
"Ah, um... Nice meeting you sir..." Luna mumbled, glancing back over her shoulder at the man who waved happily at her before returning to whatever he was doing before.
"Sorry about my Dad..." Bulma went on, chuckling before shaking her head. "He gets a little too excited about his research... But hey! You must be wondering what happened on Namek..."
Luna stared at her nervously as she was hoping it was good news.
"Come on," Bulma said, tugging her along as she lead them towards another area of the compound. "I'll explain everything on the way..."
Luna listened quietly to her story about how Goku had chosen to stay behind and fight Frieza while everyone else on Namek was wished back to Earth... She told her about how the rest of the Namekians were brought back to life as well and were now staying with her until they could use the dragonballs again to wish for their planet back...
"So, you mean Dende is alive?! They're all alive!" Luna shouted happily, making the blue haired woman next to her smile.
"Yep, you got it! Except we'll have to wait a little longer to wish back Krillin... He was already wished back to life once before with the Earth's dragonballs-"
"You can only be wished back once?" Luna couldn't help but interrupt, as she was interested in knowing how he was going to get wished back at all...
"Yeah... It's against the rules..." Bulma explained as Luna was even more confused.
"There's rules?!"
"Mmhmm..." Bulma nodded, excited to provide her with a lesson on the magical orbs. "Like, you can't bring back anyone who died of old age or natural causes... And you can't wish for anything that is beyond the power of what the creator of the dragonballs can do. Namekian dragonballs have rules too, but they're a little different..." She trailed off, figuring she would tell her about it later.
"Oh! And kind of off topic... But in case you're wondering, I'm the one who changed your clothes after Piccolo brought you inside... We're really going to have to find you something else to wear... That dress is history!" She finished, chuckling as Luna had to agree.
I really owe her...
"Thanks Bulma... Really, I can't thank you enough for everything you've done..."
"Don't mention it! Now come on, I'm sure everyone will be happy to see you're finally up..."
"How long was I out for?"
"Three days."
"THREE DAYS?!" Luna choked, not believing her at first. "Wh-what?"
"Yeah, I was surprised too... A little worried actually!" Bulma laughed, as they turned down another hallway, heading towards the door at the end of it. "You must be starving! We'll get you something to eat after you say hello to everyone! Here we are!" She announced, swinging the door in front of them open as Luna stepped foot outside, loving the feel of the grass underneath her bare feet.
"Hey guys! She's awake!" Bulma shouted, watching as Gohan and Dende both stopped their card game to look over at them.
"Luna!" They shouted in unison, running towards her as she felt her eyes starting to water. She ran forward to greet them, scooping them both up in a tight hug as one tear slid down her cheek.
"I'm so glad that you're both okay..." She laughed happily, swinging them around once before setting them down. "Everyone made it!"
"Everyone but my dad..." Gohan mumbled, looking down before sighing. "But... We're going to wish him back when the dragonballs can be used again! Him and Krillin!" He cheered as Luna nodded to him, placing her hand on the boy's shoulder reassuringly.
A lot of the Namekians seemed eager to meet her as she looked around, noticing Moori among them as she sent him a smile and a wave before he walked over to talk to her.
"Thank you dear child," He said, nodding his head respectfully. "Dende told me about everything you did to help us..."
"I... I tried my best..." Luna said sincerely, looking behind him for a moment while noticing a familiar face was looking right at her. "I'm glad you're all alright..." She finished, smiling at everyone before seeing Piccolo walk off as he sat down a ways away to meditate.
Suddenly a woman with dark hair and eyes to match was right in her face, smiling at her before grabbing her hands. "Thank you for keeping an eye on my little boy!" She said gratefully, pulling her into a hug as Luna didn't quite know how to react.
"Mom..." Gohan mumbled, his cheeks turning a bit pink as he scratched the back of his head.
"So... You're Gohan's mother?" Luna asked, trying to breathe as the the woman gave her one last squeeze. "It's nice to meet you..."
Wow, she's got quite the grip...
She nodded, finally letting Luna go as she placed an arm around Gohan before speaking. "Anything you need, don't hesitate to ask... My name's Chi Chi and you're welcome to visit Gohan anytime!" Chi Chi insisted, giving Luna a look that said she meant business. "I mean it! No being shy..."
Luna nodded happily, smiling at everyone as she finally felt at peace for once. It's... It's so nice to be around these people... They're all so welcoming and kind...
"Alright, come on Luna..." Bulma said, turning back towards the door as she thought about everything they had to do. "First, you can take a shower and wash all that hair of yours, then-"
"Bulma?" Luna said suddenly, interrupting the woman.
"What's up?"
"There's one more person I want to talk to first..."
"Hmm... Fine. But then we're going to get you cleaned up and it's straight to the mall! This is a perfect excuse to go shopping!"
"Um, o-okay..." Luna stuttered, knowing the blue haired woman wasn't going to take no for an answer. "...What's a mall?"
Bulma's nearly fell over as she stared at her friend with a shocked expression before remembering that she did come from another planet, which was most likely, very different than Earth. "Don't worry, it's a magical place..." She smiled, giggling to herself in excitement. "Just hurry up!"
Luna nodded, jogging over to where she saw Piccolo sitting with his arms crossed as she stood in front of him for a second before speaking.
"Hi..." She said nervously, smiling as he opened his eyes to look at her. "I... I just wanted to say thanks for helping me back there... And... And I wanted to thank Nail too..." She trailed off, fidgeting as she remembered what Dende had said. "But I guess I'm talking to both of you now, huh?"
"Hmpf. You're talking more to me than anyone else..." Piccolo grunted, frowning as he thought about what happened on Namek. "But even I'm not sure about how this kind of thing works..."
"Ah, I see... Well, thank you... I'm glad you and Gohan were able to make it back safe..."
"Thanks for looking out for him." Piccolo said seriously, surprised the words actually left his mouth as he watched the corners of her mouth turn up.
"It was no problem at all! He's like the little brother I never had..." Luna admitted, giggling a bit before continuing. "Well, a little brother that's crazy strong-"
"Luna! Hurry up!" Bulma shouted, looking rather impatient. "I wanna get to the store before it closes!"
"Coming Bulma!" She yelled back before turning to Piccolo and giving him a small bow. "I guess I'll see you around then..." She grinned, watching as he nodded before she turned to leave.
Piccolo observed her as she hurried over to where Bulma stood, the blue haired woman practically screaming something about her love for clothes and other human things. Tch, what a waste of time... I do owe her one for saving Gohan when I wasn't there... He thought seriously, not liking the idea of being in anyone's debt.
"I'm going to make you more adorable than you already are! If that's even possible!" Bulma teased, pinching the girl's cheek as Piccolo watched her face turn red before closing his eyes, thinking back on how fiercely she had fought against Frieza.
Impressive... I've never seen anything like that before...
With the right kind of training, she could become a very formidable fighter...
...
A few months later...
...
So much has happened in such a short amount of time... Luna thought, sitting under one of her favorite trees as she listened to the soothing sound of the waterfall beside her. She stretched her arms above her head, yawning as she leaned back, thinking about everything that had occurred in the last four months...
As soon as the Namekian dragonballs could be used again, Porunga was summoned, as well as a new planet for the Nameks... Tearful goodbyes were said as Luna wished Dende, Moori and the rest of the Namekians farewell, promising that they would see each other again someday. Krillin, Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha were all brought back to life with the dragon's help, all of them very eager to meet the girl they had heard so much about from King Kai...
Porunga attempted to bring Goku back to the land of the living as well, but surprised everyone by saying that he was unable to grant that wish because Goku was still alive and didn't wish to come back yet for some reason. Once Vegeta learned that Kakarot was probably training on another planet, perfecting his new found Super Saiyan ability, he jumped in one of Dr. Brief's ships, taking off before anyone could stop him.
Luna had to admit, she was kind of sad to see him go. As much of a jerk as he was, he was a great sparing partner and actually taught her a lot about strategy and fighting techniques during their time spent training together. After he left however, she found she had more time to relax and now spent most of her days training with Piccolo and playing with Gohan, whenever his mother would actually let the boy outside that is...
Luna sighed, closing her eyes for a moment as she almost dozed off before a voice beside her spoke.
"Napping?" Piccolo asked, a smirk on his face as he stared down at her while crossing his arms. "I thought you were out fishing with Gohan..."
"His mom made him go home to study..."
Luna yawned, stretching again before standing up and dusting herself off. "She was very... Adamant about it."
"Hmpf. Sounds like Chi Chi alright..." He replied, frowning as he thought about all the training the boy was missing out on because of her. "Aren't you staying with them tonight?"
"Heh, I probably would have just slept out here all night if you hadn't woken me up... But I'm okay with that. Could use a pillow though..." She finished with a laugh, glancing back at Piccolo who was just staring at her seriously. "So... What are you doing here?"
"I came to see Gohan."
"Oh."
"Since that won't be happening, I'll be leaving... Unless..." Piccolo said, a teasing smirk creeping across his features. "You're not too tired to do some training?"
Luna grinned, loving a good challenge. And ever since she had spent a fair amount of time training with Vegeta, her healing powers and her combat abilities had increased drastically. "Hmm... I didn't know you felt like getting your green ass kicked today..." She taunted, sending him a wink as she watched his smirk quickly replace itself with an angry look.
"Being overconfident in a fight can be your downfall..." Piccolo said seriously, taking off his cape and turban before getting into a fighting stance. "And I don't plan on losing Princess..."
"I already told you, don't call me that!" Luna growled, her eyes narrowing at his new nickname for her.
Piccolo just laughed, knowing he had struck a chord. Both of them teased and taunted each other regularly ever since they began training together, but calling her 'Princess' really seemed to rile her up.
It's her fault for insisting on wearing dresses all the time... He thought, chuckling to himself. Though he had to admit, the new one Bulma had picked out really did suit her well. Why am I thinking about that?!
"HA!" Luna shouted, charging towards him as his eyes widened, momentarily caught off guard as he was barely able to block the punch she threw.
He closed his hand around her fist, tossing her into the air with a yell as he followed her, both of them exchanging kicks and punches wildly. Even though she wore dresses and looked like an innocent little girl, she was fierce and driven on the battlefield.
Maybe I'll actually get to see that power up today if I push her hard enough... Piccolo thought, smirking as he spun around, landing a kick that sent her flying. She recovered quickly, launching herself back at him more viciously than before as she punched him hard in the stomach, surprising him as he actually had trouble breathing for a moment.
"Heh, so you wanna play rough then?" The Namekian growled, deciding it was time to kick it up a notch. "CHASING BULLET!" He shouted, blasting a beam of energy right towards her as he watched her eyes go wide. Let's see how you deal with that one...
He laughed, watching as she dodged before realizing the beam was coming back around for her.
"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit! Not faaaaair!" Luna shouted, flying around while trying to shake the beam as she got an idea. She flew towards the forest, zipping in and out of the trees before the beam got caught on one, blasting the entire area apart.
"Piccoloooooo!" She whined, flying back towards him while sending him a nasty glare. "I like this spot! Don't destroy it!"
"Complain about it later!" He countered, charging up another ki blast. "Right now you're just trying to survive!" He yelled, launching his attack as he watched it sail towards her.
Luna dodged it easily, looking down where the fighter was floating to send him a smirk... But he wasn't there.
Oh no-
He appeared right behind her before she could react, slamming her down to the ground before grinning as he split himself into three clones.
"Ugh..." Luna coughed, pulling herself up quickly before looking up with a chuckle. "I must have hit my head a little too hard... Because it looks like there's three Piccolo's..."
"Stay focused!" Piccolo shouted, all three of them coming at her fast before landing hit after hit.
Luna could hold her ground against one Piccolo, but three... Not so much. Even though when he split himself his clones were weaker, she still couldn't dodge the majority of the attacks they were sending her way. After a few minutes of constantly getting assaulted, she was almost ready to give up.
"Piccolo, I- I think you win..." She coughed, knowing when she was beaten.
"Why don't you use the power you used to fight Frieza?" He asked seriously, his clones retreating back inside him as he wondered why she wouldn't just take the easy way out. Why is she holding back?!
"I- I..."
"Don't hesitate! Give me all you've got!" Piccolo demanded, kicking her harshly as she flew a few feet away. "Come on!"
"Piccolo! Knock it off! I-"
"If this were a real battle, you'd be dead!" He shouted, swinging at her once more and narrowly missing as his anger finally got the better of him. His fist slammed against a nearby tree as the wood broke from the sheer force of the impact, making Luna's eyes go wide.
"NOW SHOW ME!"
"I CAN'T OKAY!" Luna screamed, losing her patience as she brought one foot up before kicking him away from her as he stared at her in shock.
"I can't do it! Is that what you want to hear?!" She shouted, glaring at him as her voice began to crack. "I've been trying ever since I got back from Namek....... But I can't." She finished, looking at the ground before cursing to herself.
"Luna... I-"
Before he could say anything else she took off, flying away as fast as she could while leaving Piccolo staring after her, feeling guilty.
