Chapter 4
Warnings: Mention of blood
~Vikk's P.O.V.~
We all whip around and pull out our swords, expecting a zombie to shuffle out from behind the bush. But everyone just kinda freezes when it emerges. It's not a zombie... No... it's quite the opposite. A male appears from behind the bush and freezes when he sees us with our swords drawn. He has tawny brown hair which spikes up slightly. He's wearing a blue hoodie, white t-shirt, and black pants. A small stream of blood is trickling down from his head and his hazel eyes are filled with confusion and fear. But we immediately lower our swords when we realize he's not a threat.
"Sorry we thought you were a zombie." Preston explains, "I'm Preston."
"I'm Vikk."
"The names Lachlan"
"My name is Rob..." He replies weakly and cautiously.
"Are you okay? You look petty beat up there. Come sit down." Preston states worriedly.
Rob nods and Preston scoots over to make room on the log he's sitting on. Rob kinda stumbles over before slumping down. I push myself to my feet and slide over to him, offering a piece of steak in my hand. He accepts it gratuitously, chomping down on it without hesitation.
"So what happened to you anyway?" Lachlan questions, leaning back against a tree.
"Well I couldn't get anywhere safe before nightfall so I was stuck fighting mobs all night... A creeper blew up and a piece of stone hit my head resulting in well... This." Rob explains, pointing at his head.
"Ouch. Hey Rob... You wouldn't happen to have a house nearby would you?" I question.
"That's just the thing... I don't actually know I got here... A couple of days ago I found myself in the middle of this forest with no clue of my past or where I was..." Rob continues, staring off into the distance.
"That happened to us too!" Preston exclaims.
"What?"
"He's not joking. Each of us has just kinda appeared here... With no memories. Let me guess, you suddenly were here at night when the fog was really heavy, right?" Lachlan guesses.
Rob nods, his jaw hanging open.
"I wonder how many more there are... Like us. Or maybe this is all of us?" I ponder, glancing at Lachlan, Rob, and Preston in turn.
"This is strange..." Rob agrees, furrowing his brow in thought.
"We need to get to the bottom of this. I can't handle not having any memories forever." Preston chimes in.
"Well at least we know one thing... We all must have known each other before whatever happened caused us to lose our memories. I mean, the exact same thing has happened to us... At the exact same time. It's really weird." Lachlan states, all of us nodding our agreements.
The next minute or so is filled with nothing but the sounds of the forest. We all sit there, lost in thought. I close my eyes and rest my head in my hands, thinking hard. Something seems to be telling me Rob isn't the last one. There are more... I can feel it... I note, opening my eyes and silently glancing around the area. I look back down at the ground. But even if we manage to find whoever is in this same situation... What then? Well I guess we'll have to try and get our memories back... But how? I know I have absolutely no clue, and I doubt any of the others do either. This time when I glance up everyone has shifted. Preston and Rob are discussing something quietly, what I don't know, Lachlan is sharpening his sword with a random stone, someone is standing half hidden by a tree, looking on, the wind is blowing lightly... Hold up.
I snap my head back towards the trees and freeze when I see a figure, hidden by shadows, hidden behind a tree. Preston, Rob, and Lachlan don't seem to notice them so I'm left to stare awkwardly back at them. Just for protection I reach for my sword but as soon as I move the figure bolts away and I only catch a glimpse of red and black before they've dove over a bush.
"Hey, wait!" I call after them, shooting up.
The others shout my name after me, quickly scrambling to their feet and dashing after me. But I don't stop for them, after all, I'm shorter than all three of them so they'd be able to catch up soon enough. I push my speed to the limit, just being able to make out the dashing figure in front of me about fifty blocks away. My legs start to tighten in protest but I shake my head and push on, ignoring my burning lungs. This person is quick! But eventually I notice they begin to slow, their steps becoming more frantic. Up ahead I catch glance of a clearing and what looks to be a cliff face. They'll be trapped!
With one final push I shoot through the tree line, skidding to a halt when I see the figure, from what I can see male, has his back turned to me and is looking at the cliff in front of him. It's blocking his path. I breath heavily, my breaths ragged as the male refuses to turn around for the moment. A second later and the other three have joined my side, bombarding me with 'where did you go?!'s and 'we were worried!'s until they see the guy standing there and fall silent. All we can see is that he has chestnut hair, spiking upwards slightly, a red and black checkered hoodie, and blue jeans.
Then slowly he turns around, backing up while he does so until he's almost at the cliff. Caramel eyes bore into us, fierce and wary. Now that he's facing us we can see he's also wearing a white shirt, and a necklace with a gold pendant attached to the end. He draws a worn down stone sword, holding it up in defence.
"Hey, we aren't going to hurt you." I blurt out, quickly stashing away my sword.
"Then why did you chase me?" He counters warily, glaring at me.
"I was just curious. I mean I should be considering you were hiding behind a tree and watching us... It was kinda creepy actually."
"And what is that?!" He exclaims, nodding towards Preston.
"Not a threat to you." Preston replies.
He lowers his sword slightly.
"Hey... You wouldn't have happened to just kinda find yourself here a couple days ago at night with heavy fog and no memories besides your name by any chance... Would you?" Preston says, the stranger instantly dropping his sword to the ground.
"How did you know...?" He breaths, his eyes wide.
"It happened to us too." Lachlan says, the rest of us nodding along.
"Really?" He questions, no longer seeming hostile.
"Yeah I've been meeting more of you guys every day. So far it's the five of us... And the exact same thing has happened to each of us. We're trying to find out why and how to get our memories back." I explain, the stranger nodding slowly.
"Okay then... I guess I should apologize for jumping to conclusions like that. I was just on edge, y'know? My name is Mitch." He says, approaching me and sticking out his hand.
"I'm Vikk." I tell him, shaking his hand.
"My name's Rob."
"I'm Preston."
"And I'm Lachlan."
Mitch flashes us a smile, his previously guarded attitude completely gone.
"Is this all of us then?" Mitch questions, looking around.
"No... I feel like we still need to find someone else..." Rob says, frowning.
I nod catching Rob's eye, "I feel it too."
"So I guess onwards we go then." Preston declares, leading us away from the clearing seeing as it's a dead end.
~~~
"Alright guys, so our next goal is shelter." Rob states, gathering everyone's attention.
So far we've all done our part in collecting a ton of resources and then split them evenly, so we can craft whatever we please. Mitch went off for food, myself and Lachlan went mining, and Preston and Rob went chopping down trees for wood, saplings, and apples. The results? (Not including useless stuff like gunpowder, dirt, rotten flesh, random ores, etc. Just focusing on tools, armour, food, and wood.)
Lachlan: Full set of iron tools minus hoe, iron chest-plate, iron helmet, two stacks of spruce planks, and ten cooked steak.
Myself: Full set of iron tools minus hoe, diamond sword, iron helmet, iron boots, iron leggings, two stacks of spruce planks, one cooked chicken, thirty torches, and five cooked pork chop.
Rob: Full set of iron tools minus hoe, diamond helmet, iron boots, two stacks of spruce planks, and seven cooked mutton.
Preston: Full set of iron tools plus hoe, iron chest-plate, iron helmet, bow, seventeen arrows, two stacks of spruce planks, and nine cooked chicken.
Mitch: Full set of iron tools plus an extra iron sword and pickaxe, iron helmet, bow, twenty arrows, two stacks of spruce planks, and twelve cooked pork-chop.
"Well with all this wood you guys collected it shouldn't be too hard." Mitch commends, Preston and Rob smiling sheepishly.
"Let's get going then!" I exclaim.
Everyone pulls out their wood and within an hour, just before the sun sets, we have a grand makeshift shelter, stretching six blocks high, twenty blocks wide, and ten blocks long. Double doors stand in the entrance to our humble abode, and torches line the outside and inside, keeping mobs at bay. Inside is five beds, once for each of us, and a chest beside each so we can store our items.
"Alright guys lets get inside... The suns almost down." Mitch notes, all of us turning to face the rapidly descending sun.
"Not complaining here, I don't want to see another creeper for the rest of my life!" Lachlan exclaims.
"I second that." Rob chimes in.
"Hey! Not all creepers are bad!" Preston huffs, and we all share a laugh... Besides Preston of course... But the small smile tugging at his mouth is more than noticeable.
