Chapter 10

My mind reeled with the possibilities of what that entry might have meant, but it got me wondering if Lyliana's parents knew what mine did. Maybe that's why her parents died too?

I wasn't sure what step was next, but I knew who would have the answers.

The winding stone steps that led to the South Wing seemed longer as I climbed to the rooms at the top. The door to her room was ajar and none of the lights were on.

Jill sat with her head against the wall behind her. Her eyes were closed, and she looked as if she were in pain. Today a purplish liquid slush dripped from the IV bag into her arm.

In the entries, Jill explained that the liquids were different mixes of poisons and medications that her mother deemed "potions" that would cure the curly haired brunette of all crazy notions. In actuality the colorful cocktails were doing nothing but shortening her life; not that Headmistress really cared.

"Spying is creepy, butterfly." Jill choked out followed by a coughing fit, a thin line of blood dripped from her lips. "Come sit with me."

I crossed the room and knelt down onto the cot beside her. "That's not good." I commented about the blood.

Jill waved off my concerns with a hand. "All apart of the grand plan, Butterfly." She always sounded so calm and mysterious when she spoke to me.

"Why do you call me butterfly?" I asked, gently wiping away the line of blood with the hem of my sleeve.

She studied me for a moment. It was almost as if she wondered if telling me would be the right decision. A small smile spread across her lips before she even spoke. "You went through this phase where you were obsessed with butterflies, and one night I told you that you were my butterfly." The curly haired brunette shook her head. "You were my green eyed butterfly who came to save me from this cruel world."

We sat there for a moment in silence. I could imagine countless memories were playing in Jill's head but I had nothing. I wondered if Millie had put that file in because she believed Jill had killed herself instead of been kidnapped.

The purplish liquid slush made her shiver every time the liquid made it into her arm. I couldn't blame her if she did; this didn't seem to be much of a way to live.

"You used to sneak up here after lights out to read me bedtime stories as a child." Her voice startled me. "I didn't mean to scare you."

"It's okay." I looked at her and smiled. "Tell me more?"

"There's so much to tell you and so little time, Butterfly, I wish there was more." Jill said solemnly. "I want you to go see Ollie if anything goes south with the girls."

"Ollie?" I questioned. I don't know an Ollie.

Jill nodded. "Look through the database and find where they've taken Ollie. He can help you free the girls." She took a pink Sharpie from her back pocket. "Hand."

I stuck out my hand and Jill wrote the name Ollie on my palm. "Don't forget."

"Why can't you come with me?" I asked, not really wanting to go without her.

I still didn't know why, but the bond was undeniable between us. I needed to trust Jillian if I was ever going to figure out my past, or free all those girls.

"I wish I could but I can't." Jill kissed my hand. "Go now."

Trying to shake the feeling that something wasn't right, I left the South Wing and headed for the library.

+ + + + +

The student database was kept in the back of the library where not many students tended to bother it. I had noticed the room the other day as Maddie was trying to find Cosmos among the educational magazines.

Luckily the door wasn't locked which gave me easy access to it with little to no hassle. I locked the door behind me and clicked on the computer. It was an older computer from the mid-nineties that still required you to use a mouse and a hard drive.

The background on the computer was a picture of the class of 1999. A few faces looked familiar, but I chalked it up to similarities in features or hair.

After about forty-five minutes, I finally found a Ollie, actually an Oliver. Oliver Walters age eighteen, living in an out of campus house at 224 East Bend Road. The internet said it was about fifteen minutes from the home so if I went after lights out I could be back before morning attendance.

Welp, guess I'm going to find Oliver tonight. Hopefully he can finally answer some questions for me.
