Chapter 1
I woke up to the sound of a monotone robotic voice droning out last names over a loud speaker. Hands rose as name after name was called. Skinner. Carthcart. Ziegler. Brown....... At this point it was just a steady stream of unfamiliar names that I didn't have faces to put to so I toned the voice out.
Instead I tried to figure out where I was and why my head hurt so badly. Nothing around me looked familiar.
A large grey classroom with small windows bordering the top, a blackboard at the front that was talking about something to do with a Ouija board. Must be something new in science.
A woman in a black shapeless gown stood at the head of the class with a big thick rimmed glasses. She looked more like a prison warden than a teacher.
The faceless voice called out Buckingham and no one raised her hand. The crowd of girls looked at each other in confusion.
A pair of crystal blue eyes finally settled on me, a small smiling creeping onto her lips as she slid her hand onto the air. "I got you." She mouthed to me.
The voice went on, but now I was left wondering. Was that my name? Buckingham. It sounded familiar. Maybe the blonde knew me and could hold answers. Suppose that will have to wait until after this class is over, however.
Forty-five minutes later the very peculiar lesson was over and the kids had poured out. I had gathered that was our last class of the day that left me plenty of time to find that blonde from earlier.
"Who's your dorm mate, Buckingham?" Came a voice from behind me.
I spun around to find just the girl I was looking for. "Uh I don't know." I answered.
She took a device that kinda resembled a phone, typing something quickly. "Oh no you got the weird girl." She stated. "I'll show you to your room. I'm Maddie." She stuck out her hand.
I shook her hand carefully. "I'm....."
"Lilia." Maddie filled in for me. "The new girl. I know."
Lilia. My name is Lilia Buckingham? I'll take it. At least it wasn't some sixteen syllable hard to pronounce name.
"Could you take me to my room?" I asked cautiously, unsure if I should trust Maddie.
What did I have to lose when I already was a blank slate? Maddie led me up a concrete staircase into a large common room with a kitchen nestled in one corner.
"Eight of us share the common room and then actual dorms are divided into pairs. You share with Lyliana Wray who's very weird so I suggest you give her some space." Maddie told. "I mean I had she's behind the missing girls."
"Missing girls?" I echoed.
Maddie gave me one of those 'are you crazy' looks, but chose to explain anyway. "Girls have been going missing for the past two months. The first was-"
A short brunette clapped her book shut causing Maddie to stop mid sentence. "Madison, we're not allowed to speak about that. Do you want the Headmistress to lecture you again!" The girl had a sort of cute little accent that I couldn't quite place.
"Calm down, Millie, I was only telling the new girl about it." Maddie shot the girl a look, clearly she didn't like corrected.
"I'm Lilia." I stuck my hand out like Maddie had earlier.
The brunette adjusted her glasses before shaking my hand. "I'm Millie." She introduced with a smile. "Welcome to Washington Cavanough."
I wanted to say thanks, but something in the way she said that made me think it wasn't a compliment.
"Anyway....." Maddie trailed. "Millie and I have to work on a project but just follow the left hallway all the way to the end; last door on the left." She took Millie's arm quickly, yanking the smaller girl toward the entrance.
Okay then so now I just had to find the room, avoid my roommate, and find out about the missing girls. Oh yeah and find out who the heck I am. Easy right?
