"Greenie! Wake up ya shank!" Someone called.
I blinked, trying to regain my vision.
"Alby wants to go over the rules with you." The voice continued. Then I heard footsteps walking away.
I grunted as I stood up.
'Rules? Shank?' I thought.
I sighed then walked over towards the nearest building.
~
The rules were simple.
Never hurt another Glader, do your part, stay out of the maze (now that I know what the maze is I also know I have already broken that rule), blah, blah, blah.
"Your training starts now." Alby finished.
"Training?" I asked, "What training?"
"For your job." He said while looking at me like I was stupid.
He then walked away.
"Where to first?" I called out to him.
"Follow me!" He shouted back without turning around.
I ran after him.
"You're going to the blood house today." He said when I caught up to him.
"Excuse me? Blood house? That doesn't sound like an ideal job to me." I said.
"Doesn't matter." He said. "If you're good at it, Winston, the Keeper of the blood house, will choose you for the job."
I shuddered at the thought.
~
Training at the blood house was disgusting.
People might find this odd, but I don't like killing animals.
I was now walking towards the big wall the builders had started.
Yep...building yay.
I saw a blond boy on his knees working on something.
I tapped his shoulder.
He stood up, then turned around.
"Bella?" He asked.
It took me a second to figure out who he was.
"Oh, hey Ben." I said casually.
For some reason he must of thought I was funny because he started to chuckle.
I rolled my eyes.
"Are you going to help me or not?" I asked.
"Are you looking for Gally?" He asked.
"Um, I guess?" I answered, not really sure who Gally was.
"Come on." He said.
He led me through a small crowd of builders.
Ben stopped in front of another guy.
"Gally, the Gree- I mean, Bella is here to be trained."
Gally looked at me.
He rolled his eyes.
"Your going to haul wood for now." Gally grumbled.
'Jerk' I thought.
He looked me in the eyes.
"Did you say something?" He asked.
"No, I didn't." I replied sharply. Then I added 'jerk' in my head.
He stood up really straight then came really close to my face.
It was obvious he was trying to look menacing, but it wasn't working.
"Quit calling me names, Shank." He spat.
Some spit landed on my cheek, and I wiped it off with my hand.
"Sorry, but I don't want to be covered in your saliva." I said back.
Then, before I knew what was happening, I was on the ground.
He pushed me.
I quickly got back up.
He started toward me, with a determined look on his face.
He raised his fist quickly, but I was faster.
I kicked him in the stomach, so forcefully that he went flying a few feet from where he was standing.
Before he had time to stand back up, I ran.
'Where did Ben go?' I thought. 'Crud, he must of gone back before Gally had his little tantrum.'
I didn't stop running until I was at the homestead.
"Help!" I yelled as loud as I could.
I was about to yell again before I was knocked down.
I flipped over to see Gally standing in front of me.
Then, someone hit him on the head with a stick.
Gally fell, and standing behind him was Ben.
He dropped the stick, and came and helped me up.
He pulled me into a hug when he saw the tears that began to form in my eyes.
I don't know why I was crying, I guess I was just really scared.
Soon after, Newt came running over, along with Alby.
"What bloody happened?" Newt asked.
The question was directed towards me, but Ben answered.
"Gally attacked her, but I don't know why." He responded.
They looked to me.
By now, a small crowd of Gladers had formed around us.
"H-he told me to stop calling him names, but I wasn't I swear!" I said, stammering a little.
Newt and Alby exchanged glances, then Alby said,
"Alright everyone go back to work! We'll deal with this shank when he wakes up."
I wiped away my tears, but Ben still had his arms wrapped around me protectively.
After everyone was gone, he let go.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I replied.
We started walking away from the homestead.
~
It was dinner.
I hadn't really eaten anything since the incident, and I wasn't hungry anyway.
"Bella, you have to eat." Ben pleaded.
I looked into his eyes, and was put under a spell.
I started shoveling food into my mouth until my plate was clean.
"Happy?" I asked.
He smiled.
"Very."
We walked out and toward the deadheads where my hammock was.
Before we were halfway there, I felt dizzy.
I stopped.
Then collapsed.
My eyes started to close, then I heard an unfamiliar boy's voice start talking.
"Wicked is good. Bella, Wicked is helping you." He said. Then he whispered, "Don't be afraid to use your powers."
A name escaped my lips before I completely passed out.
"Thomas?"
