Chapter 2, Alex
"What?" Leanne and I said simultaneously. I was a little taken aback while Leanne was furious.
"You invited that bitch to be in your band instead of me? What, am I not good enough for you freaks or something?" she was yelling.
Apparently, she was unaware that I'd been in it before. And how had she even heard Nicole ask me about it when she'd been speaking so quietly?
"What the hell are you complaining about, Leanne? You don't even like any of us," Josh pointed out.
"Oh, don't worry about it, Josh, I'm sure she's just bent because someone else is getting the time of day and not her," Kate responded for her.
"Yes, well, she needs to calm down now," interjected Mr. Peterson, "this is not the time or place. Save it until after class, all of you, or you'll all be awarded detention."
"Fine!" Leanne huffed, throwing herself back into her chair, having gotten up from it during her little outburst.
"So, Alex...you in?" Nicole asked again, still hesitant. She was worried about upsetting me, but she needn't be. I was ready to return to them.
I smiled. "Yeah. Count me in."
The rest of music class went as normal, with little to no trouble from Leanne. My fourth period class was English, but none of my friends were in it with me. I got my work done early, so I read a little more of The Outsiders, reaching the part where Ponyboy and Johnny fell asleep in the vacant lot after leaving the drive-in. This was where the story would begin to pick up.
However, the bell rang before I could read further.
I rolled my eyes in annoyance as I gathered my things, and out of the corner of my eye I noticed something shift ever so slightly near me. It looked like an eraser, but no one had even remotely touched it. The hell? I thought. I strode over to it and stared at it for a minute, then I decided to try something just to be sure I wasn't imagining things.
I squinted my eyes, focusing as hard as I could on the eraser. A few seconds into this exercise, it slid at least three inches across the desk.
Holy shit, it's me! I'm causing it!
I was officially freaked out. I began hyperventilating. This did not happen in everyday life! This was the kind of shit I'd expect from a movie or a book, but to live it? It was unreal to me, and I bolted out of the classroom to meet up with Lana before anything else could happen. I just couldn't handle anything more right then.
"Alex, are you okay?" she asked immediately upon seeing me, "You look like you've seen a ghost. Did something happen?"
"Well, I certainly didn't see a ghost, I'll tell you that much," I muttered dryly, "Come on. I'll explain when we get to my place."
Lana nodded and sent a quick text to Destiny, letting her know that we'd left already and not to worry about driving us home. Then she took my hand and we made our way on foot to my apartment. "By the way," she said, "I have a bit of a surprise for you."
"Oh yeah? What's that?" I asked.
"I'll show you when we get to the apartment."
"Fair enough."
When we got there, Abigail was nowhere to be found. She probably went out on a date or something. I lead Lana to my room and she set her backpack down, immediately fishing through it in search of something. "Here they are," she said, pulling out whatever 'they' were. "My dad got me two tickets to see Evanescence live this weekend and guess who I'm inviting?"
My eyes widened. "No way! Are you serious?!" Lana nodded, the smile on her face just as big as mine as I ran forward to give her a massive bear hug. "Lana, thank you so much! You are the absolute best."
"I certainly try," Lana handed me the ticket, which I tucked safely away. The rest of our evening was spent working on homework together, playing Minecraft, watching horror movies and eating junk food. Abigail came home sometime around 4:45 and began making dinner for us, going into detail about how her latest date went as we all ate together. For the last three years, she hadn't been into the whole serious relationship thing, instead opting for casual dates every once in awhile. This time, though, looked like she might actually be interested in giving the guy a chance.
"Hey, Alex, you mentioned there was something you wanted to talk about at school," Lana suddenly remembered.
Oh yeah, that's right, I thought. With all the fun we'd been having I'd completely forgotten about that strange incident after class. I explained what happened to both Abigail and Lana, and as surprised as I expected both of them to be, Abigail was strangely calm.
"You too, huh?" was all she said. She then pointed to a glass sitting on the table and it began to float towards her. "I can do it, too, only I've learned to control it."
My jaw dropped at what I just saw. "Why the fuck didn't anyone ever tell me?"
"Would you honestly have believed me if I'd just come up to you one day and went, "Oh, gosh, by the way, Alex, we have magical powers!"
I considered that carefully. "No, you're right. I'd have thought you were bat-shit crazy."
"I rest my case. And Lana, this has to stay between us. Deal?"
"Of course," agreed Lana, "You can both trust me."
"Good."
"So besides telekinesis," I turned back to Abigail, "is there anything else we can do that I don't know about?"
"Sorry, kid. Telekinesis is all I got," Abigail shrugged, walking over to the sink and placing her dirty dishes in it. "Mom or Dad might have had some additional powers, but who knows?"
