Chapter 5 - Changes

It had been a few weeks. Olivia was settling in well at the firehouse and had gotten to know everyone a lot better. She had become more familiar with Chicago and was really enjoying herself. It was just after 4pm on Friday afternoon when Chief Boden walked into the common room where everyone was chilling.
"Listen up. I have an announcement to make." He called out, gathering everyone's attention.
"That department has decided to permanently place another ambulance at Firehouse 51. As of next shift, Ambulance 67 will stationed here with us." Boden announced. After a few seconds, he walked out again.
"67, isn't that Chase's unit?" Olivia asked.
"Yeah. Chase Dean and his partner, Riley Andrews." Casey filled in.
"Cool, cool." Olivia muttered, having met Chase on a few other occasions before.

Truck 81. Fire alarm sounded and Bill & Morres Tower

Olivia's and the others off Truck leapt into action and ran off to the truck.

A few days had passed. It was the start of a new shift for everyone and that meant the addition of ambulance 67 at the firehouse.

It was just after 8am, when Chase and his partner Riley, arrived at the firehouse. Chase is 32 and Riley is 29. Chase has been a paramedic for 4 years and is also a fully qualified member of Squad (and truck) for the past 3 years whereas Riley has been a paramedic for 7 years. They have been partners for 4 years and have loved every day of it.

After talking to Chief Boden and filling out the necessary paperwork, they both head to the locker room. The first thing they both do is change into their uniforms before organising their belongings in their lockers. They both stick their names on the front of their lockers before walking out to the meeting room. Everyone soon files into the room until its full. Soon after Chief walks in and starts to speak.
"Right everyone, these are our new medics for ambo 67, Riley Andrews and Chase Dean – I'm sure you've seen them around before but make them feel at home." He says, before walking out. Everyone takes it in turns to greet them before they excuse themselves to sort out their rig. Olivia and Slyvie offer to give them a hand and show them round the store room as Emily deals with some incident reports. The pair grab what they need before rummaging through their rig and scanning through their checklists. After making sure everything is filled to the brim they head into the common room and take a seat. They get chatting with Olivia and Sylvie and both soon conclude that they are going to enjoy working at 51.

Later that shift, Olivia is sat on her bunk reading a book. Chase and RIley are also sat in their bunks across from her and the three of them are making general chit-chat.

Ambulance 67. Truck 81, person trapped, South Dean Recycling Plant

Everyone stands up and races to their vehicles before they make their way to the recycling plant.

When they arrive at the Plant, Casey walks over to one of the workers with everyone in toe.
"What happened?" He asked them.
"We found them there. Looks like they were trying to get some clothes out of the bank. They must have fallen in. We don't have a key to open it so we called you." The worked explains.
"Who does have the key?" Casey asks.
"The donations bin manager. He's not answering his phone. We keep asking for a spare key but they won't give us one."
"Okay. We'll get them out." Casey assures the worker before he turns to face everyone.
"Otis, Kidd, get the saw. Chase and Riley, be ready to treat them. Herrmann, go with the worker and check the other bins, Make sure no-one else is trapped. Liv and I will see if we can assess the patient." Casey instructed his team. Olivia nods and grabs a wooden crate from nearby. SHe places it down on the ground by the bin and opens the flap to look inside using her torch.
"Chicago Fire Department, can you hear me?" She calls out.
"H-help!" Someone croaks out.
"My names Liv okay? We're going to get you out." Olivia reassures the young boy.
"What's your name?"
"Ethan."
"Okay Ethan, are you hurt?" Olivia asks.
"I-I can't move. I'm...I'm really cold." Ethan cries out.
"Okay honey. We're going to get you out okay?" Olivia says, before stepping away.
"One vic. Can't be more than 16. Name's Ethan." She informs everyone.
"Let's get to work opening this thing up!" Casey orders. He looks back towards the bin and see's Olivia sliding in through the hatch.
"Olivia!" He shouts, running over. He looks inside and sees that Olivia has already taken off her jacket and placed it over Ethan.
"Hurry up! He's fading!" Olivia shouts to the others.
"You heard her! Let's move people!" Casey shouts.

"Ethan honey, there's going to be a lot of loud sounds okay? But I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." Olivia reassured him.
"Can you tell me what happened?" Olivia asked, reaching for his wrist to check his pulse.
"I was so cold...I just wanted something warm. I didn't mean to fall." Ethan said.
"Okay, we're nearly in!" Casey called down to Liv.
"You hear that Ethan! We're nearly out of here. Just stay with me okay?" Olivia encouraged. A few minutes later they had managed to cut through the locks and open up the side of the bin.
"We need a spine board and collar!" Chase shouted, moving to help with Ethan. Riley ran off to get it as the placed blankets over Ethan.
"His pulse is tacky. I think he's in shock." Olivia told Chase. He agreed as RIley returned. Everyone helped to get Ethan onto the spinal board and out to the ambulance. Casey stayed back and helped Olivia out of the bin. After seeing off the ambulance, Truck started packing up their gear.
"Nice work Liv. Just, don't make it a habit of climbing into clothes banks yeah?" Casey teased, as they all started getting into the truck. Olivia smiled and nodded. After stopping to refuel the truck, they headed back to the firehouse.

When they get back, everyone is sat in the common room eating as it's dinner time. Truck 81 goes and joins them. Liv gets a plate of the lasagne that had been made and grabs a few pieces of garlic bread before she sits down at the long table.
"I heard what happened. Pretty stupid climbing into the bin like that. Not knowing what was in there." Severide said, holding back a smirk.
"Oh please. I may have not known you long, but I sure as hell do know that you would have done the exact same. So don't give me that crap." Olivia said jokingly. Severide raised his hands in a playful surrender.
"How's Ethan?" Olivia asked, catching site of Chase and Riley walking back in.
"No major injuries. They've moved him up to the P.I.C.U for a few days until they get his temp up. But he'll be okay. C.P.S are involved now so he'll be placed somewhere better than the streets." Chase explained, as himself and Riley grabbed some food as well.
"Good. The streets are no place for a kid." Olivia said, causing everyone to agree.
"How about we all go to Molly's for a drink after shift?" Hermann suggested. Most people agreed.
"Liv?" Chase asked.
"Sure, I'm in." She smiled.

A/N - Hey guys! The first part of this chapter is very similar to a part in my old One Chicago book. Chase Dean and Riley Andrews are my own characters who I have used previously. The second part of this chapter is inspired by a chapter from one of ChloeOgradyXo books. (If you haven't already, go check them out, she's an amazing writing and awesome person!)
Hope you enjoyed it! X
