Chapter 38 - Chout, Rhymes with Shout
It was a weird atmosphere around the firehouse with Chase there. A piece of their team, a member of their family was missing and it was very noticeable. Heidi and Olivia were the ones struggling the most. Olivia was missing her best friend and Heidi was missing her partner and her best friend. What made the situation worse is with Chase out, they were down a medic which meant floaters. It had been a couple of shifts now and for this particular shift, Heidi was stuck with Chout. He had worked at 51 before but not since Heidi had been there. It already sucked being away from her normal partner and to make things worse, Chout wasn't exactly the best partner. He was a good paramedic no doubt but he doesn't know when to stop talking or when to gives things a rest. With tensions already hi, everyone could see how stressed-out Heidi was working with him. Ambulance 67 had just returned from a call. Truck 81 was out doing equipment checks on the apparatus floor.
"Hey Choot, why don't you grab some supplies and I'll sort the sheets." Heidi suggested.
"Actually its-"
"Chout, it rhymes with shout, I got it. Whatever. Please stop reminding me!" Heidi snapped. Olivia looked over at the two medics.
"Look I'm sorry okay? It's not you, I'm just having a bad day." She apologies to Chout. Chout just nodded and went off to grab the supplies. Heidi sighed and started heading towards the locker room to grab something from her locker. Olivia stepped in her tracks quickly and stopped her by the squad table.
"Hey, he'll be back in no-time." Olivia smiled, trying to cheer her fiend up as she could tell she was seriously missing her partner and best friend.
"Yeah." Heidi nodded, flashing a weak smile back to her before she continued through the firehouse.
"She okay?" Severide asked Olivia as he turned around in his chair.
"Yeah. This is a difficult situation as it is, let alone being paired with Chout. I've done that and it's not fun." Olivia explained as she continued writing something down on the clipboard that was in her hands.
"Don't I know it." Severide mumbled, having worked with Chout multiple times before.
It had been a fairly quiet shift all around the house. Ambo had had a combined total of only 5 jobs so far whilst Squad and Truck had only had 3. They were halfway through the shift and it was dinner time. Liv was sitting in front of the TV in the common room watching the news as Cruz finished cooking.
"The fire continues to burn and according to the Seattle Fire Department is one of the worst fires they've dealt with this year. The firefighters on the ground have just declared it a five-alarm fire with units from across the whole city responding..." The news reporter said. Olivia was sitting on the couch, leaning forward, watching the television intently.
"That's worse than the skyscraper fire." She said to the others around her without taking her eyes off the TV.
Squad 3, Truck 81,
Ambulance 61
House Fire 2944 Wexler
4 occupants trapped.
"Oh damn." Cruz moaned as he stopped cooking and turned everything off. Everyone jumped up and ran to the vehicles. Olivia kicked off her boots and pulled on her turnout gear before she jumped into the back of the truck. As they pulled away from the firehouse, Olivia pulled her phone from her pocket and sent a message to Travis.
Just saw the news. Hope you guys are okay. Let me know how it goes. Stay safe!! Xx - Liv
After she hit send, she stuffed her phone back into her pocket and focused on the upcoming job.
"You alright?" Casey asked, noticing that something was off.
"Yeah. I just know that call might be difficult for my old team." Olivia responded. Casey nodded as he turned back in his seat.
A few hours later they were back at the house. It was getting late so Olivia and the others were doing some maintenance checks on the truck now that they were between calls. She had just rolled up a hose after checking it when her phone chimed in her pocket. She stood up and pulled it out to check it. A message from Travis flashed across the screen. She quickly swiped to unlock her phone and read the message properly.
All good here. Fire was contained about an hour later. Heading back to the station to eat now :) Hope you're okay too! Xx - Trav
Liv smiled and sent off a quick reply before she slipped her phone back into her pocket and got back to work. She must admit one of the hardest things about transferring to Chicago was definitely not being there for her team back at Station 19 like she used to be.
"Everyone in Seattle is safe. The fire has been contained now as well." She announced to those around her as they knew she had been worrying all day.
"That's good news kid." Herrmann said from his engine as his team were also doing checks.
"Alright guys, finish this up and then get some shut eye whilst we can." Olivia announced to her team as Casey was in his office catching up on paperwork.
8am the next morning, Olivia was walking out the firehouse with some of the others.
"You need a ride Liv?" Severide asked as he walked out hand in hand with Kidd.
"No thanks, my ride just pulled up." She laughed, pointing to Antonio's truck which just pulled in across the road.
"See you guys later." She smiled as she looked both ways before crossing the road. She dumped her bag on the backseat before she opened the front door.
"Hello, hello." Olivia smiled as she climbed into the passenger seat of Antonio's truck. She leant over and gave him a kiss.
"How was your day yesterday?" She asked him as he pulled back out onto the street.
"Not bad. We wrapped up our case and got most of the paperwork done. How was your shift?" He asked, glancing at her.
"It was good. Not too busy. We had a couple of fires but nothing big. I think the most stressful part of my day was hearing about a five-alarm fire in Seattle." Olivia explained.
"Really?"
"Hmm, it was bigger than the skyscraper fire. I was worried about my guys but Travis said they're all good. Last I heard from him the fire was under control and they were headed back to the station to eat." Olivia explained, laughing slightly.
"So I was thinking we could go to breakfast before we hit the road to see Chase?" Antonio asked her.
"I love the sound of that." She nodded happily. Today was the day she was visiting Chase in rehab like she had promised as it had been two weeks.
Three hours later Olivia was sitting in one of the visitation rooms, waiting for Chase. He had been in a group session when they arrived so she had to wait to see him. She looked up when she heard the door open.
"There he is." She said, happy to see her best friend.
"It's good to see you." She added, getting up to hug him.
"It's good to see you too." He said, hugging her tightly back. The pair sat down on the couch.
"So, very cliché question, but how are you?" Olivia asked him.
"Better...things here have been good. It's been good getting away from everything." Chase answered truthfully.
"Good." Olivia smiled happily.
"I'm sorry I was such a dick to you that day...I didn't mean to be-" Chase apologized.
"It's fine Chase, it was situational, I get that. Hell I've been there myself when I was recovering after the skyscraper fire. It's okay to lash out sometimes." Olivia cut him off. Chase smiled slightly, happy that she got him.
"How's everyone taking it?" Chase asked her. He had given her permission to tell everyone at the firehouse alongside Boden so that they knew what was going on.
"Well, it was obviously a shock to them but they understand. They all miss you...especially Heidi." Olivia explained.
"Who's been covering me on ambo?" He asked.
"I covered one shift and then it's been floaters ever since. She's been stuck with Chout the last two shifts but he's on holiday now so who knows who will be in the next shift." Olivia told him.
"Oh god, I do not wish that man on anyone. Been stuck with him plenty of times before." Chase said, making them both laugh.
"It's really good to see you." Chase said, reaching out and taking Liv's hand in his. Liv smiled and squeezed his hand.
"I told you I got you and I meant that. Always."

A/N - Thoughts on Chout? I personally think he's a good medic but I wouldn't like to be stuck with him for a whole shift haha. Next chapter is almost finished but I might hold off on posting it so I can use it to fill the gap when I don't have much time to write. Getting closer and closer to the final chapter, eeek!! Thanks for reading.
