Chapter 33 - Roles Reversed

Next shift 48 hours later...

Olivia was sitting having a cup of coffee at the table in the common room as she scrolled through social media on her phone. Shift had only just begun so Casey was giving everyone a chance to eat and sort out a few things before he made them start some equipment checks and some cleaning jobs.

"Liv, we're down a medic until we can get a floater, do you mind filling in on ambo 67?" Boden asked Liv, making her look up from her phone.

"Sure chief, not a problem." Liv agreed, knowing Boden would have asked Casey first.

"Where's Riley? Is she okay?" Herrmann asked from the couch next to Mouch as Chase was pouring himself a cup of coffee. Everyone looked over as Chase slammed the coffee pot back into the coffee machine.

"Riley's gone to Boston and she's not coming back. She's a cheater and a liar, who lied to us all." He growled as he walked out the room. Everyone was a bit stunned. Liv glanced at Casey who was sitting at the other end of the table finishing his breakfast, before she quickly got up and went after Chase. She found him stocking the ambulance.

"Don't ask me if I'm okay." Chase said, as Liv leant against the door.

"I wasn't going to because I know you're not." Liv responded. Chase sighed as he dropped the box, he had in his hands down onto the floor. He glanced at Liv.

"We need some fuel, yeah?" Liv asked him, wanting to get him away from the firehouse because he obviously wanted to talk about it all just not here. Chase nodded.

"I'll grab us some sheets and then we'll hit the road." Liv said, heading towards the storeroom. A few minutes later she returned with a stack of sheets and put them in the seat storage before she put the gurney away as Chase put the rest of the supplies back in the storeroom. After letting the others know they were heading out, they hit the road. Liv drove. After fuelling up, Liv stopped for some coffee before she parked up in a local carpark, so they were still in their catchment area.

"Ambo 67 to main." Liv said into the radio.

"Go ahead 67."

"Please put us down on a personal break." Riley asked dispatch, as she glanced at Chase.

"Copy that 67. You're out on a personal break." Dispatch responded. Liv put the radio down and took a sip from her coffee. After a few minutes of silence, Liv spoke up.

"So, what's going on buddy?" Liv asked, shifting in her seat so she was facing him properly. Chase sighed as he fiddled with his coffee cup.

"Riley cheated...more than once." Chase said first.

"What?" Liv asked, shocked.

"Yeah. I got a call at home the other day from a hotel, saying Riley had left her card there. I didn't think too much of it when I went to pick it up because she told me her friend had a birthday there a few days before. Anyways, when I went to pick up the card, the guy at reception was shocked to see me picking it up. After he said that I asked him what he meant, and he said he had seen Riley and some guy making out and they barely made it into a room if you catch my drift. Apparently, he'd see her with him more than once." Chase explained.

"Ouch. Shit man, I'm sorry, that's horrible. What did she say about it?" Liv asked him.

"I confronted her about it that night. She tried to explain but I told her there's nothing to explain. I wasn't having it. We were engaged, there's no excuses for anything. Anyways, she's been talking about taking a sabbatical to go see her family in Boston, so I told her to leave and not come back. She didn't try to argue that, and she left. Haven't heard from her since." Chase finished explaining. Liv didn't know what to say.

"So that's why you were in a shitty mood the other day." It all made sense now. Chase nodded.

"I was trying to process it all and trying to decide how to handle it. After I left Molly's, I went home and confronted her." Chase explained quietly.

"I'm sorry Chase." She said, rubbing his arm supportively.

"We were getting married, Liv. I was ready to spend the rest of my life with her and that's how she treated me? What did I do to deserve that?" Chase asked his friend, turning to face her. Liv's heart broke even more for her friend when she saw he had tears in his eyes.

"Hey, you listen to me, okay? None of this is your fault. She didn't deserve you. You are going to get back on your feet and find someone so much better you hear me? I know it's hard and you're hurting but you'll get through this Chase. You will. Because I know you and I know how strong you are. Hell, you've been a rock for me since the first day I met you and now I'm going to be your rock, okay? I'm here for you." Liv told her seriously, getting the message across to him that this was not his fault in any way shape or form. Chase nodded and sniffled as he wiped his eyes angrily.

"Ambulance 67." Liv reached forward and picked up the radio.

"67 receiving."

"We have a job for you. Fifty-six-year-old male. Fallen with an arm injury. Can I put you down as responding?" Dispatch asked, considering 67 were still down on a personal break. Liv looked at Chase, who simply nodded.

"Go ahead and show ambo 67 as responding, over." Liv said over the radio as she switched the engine on. They both had a feeling that this was just the start of a long shift.

16 hours later...

Chase and Liv climbed out of the ambulance having just returned from a call. Correction another call. Call number 11 to be precise. It had been one hell of a shift so far. Busy, never ending and it wasn't over yet. The two medics restocked the ambulance before heading into the common room. Liv slumped down in one of the chairs and placed her head down on the table with a groan.

"You alright Liv?" Casey asks, sitting down next to her. She lifted her head.

"Yeah, I'm just super tired." She said standing up.

"Go sleep while you have the chance." Casey suggested. She didn't have to help them with rig checks as she was on ambo that shift which was an added bonus. Liv nodded before walking into the bunk area, alongside Chase. They both flopped down onto their beds with a sigh before trying to sleep. Just as they fell asleep the alarm sounded.

Squad 3, Truck 81, Ambulances 61 and 67.
Building fire and the corner of Westling and high court.
Unknown trapped.

They both rolled out of their beds and joined everyone else, who were all running towards their vehicles.

When they arrived on scene they immediately got out and started helping people away from the building. They set up a triage area a safe distance away from the building before they started treating the most seriously injured. Truck and Squad headed inside the building to start a search and rescue operation. After 30 minutes, the building was cleared, and the fire was contained. Chase and Liv returned to the scene, having just taken a patient to Chicago med. They loaded up one of the last patients before speeding away to Chicago med. After they arrived at the hospital, they unloaded the vic, before rushing them inside.

"23-year-old female. Severe smoke inhalation and minor burns to her arms. B/P 120/60, Pulse 110 and SATS were 92, risen to 98 on 15 litres of O2." Liv said, as they transferred the patient over the other bed. They left the patient in the capable hands of Dr Halstead before heading back out to the ambulance. They sat and completed all the necessary paperwork before sorting out the rig and cleaning it up. Once they were fit for service again, Chase cleared them for more jobs as Olivia started driving them back to the firehouse. There was only six hours of shift left before they could go home. Six hours.

As they pulled into the firehouse and started getting out of the ambulance, a call came across the radio.

"Are you fucking kidding me? Are we the only bloody unit working?!" Olivia groaned. Ambulance 61 had also had a rough shift and were also currently out on a job.

"Main to Ambulance 67, are you available?"

"Ambulance 67 to main, go ahead." Chase replied, as Olivia dropped her head.

"Man, down for unknown causes. (Gives address). Civilians called it in."

"Copy that main. This is ambulance 67 responding." The partners looked at each other before hopping back into the rig, this time Chase driving. They pulled out of the driveway, lights and sirens blaring. They waved to Squad who were returning to the station after a call, as they drove down the street towards the address of the call.

When they arrived at the location they got out of the ambulance.

"I'll go check it out, you grab the gear." Chase told Olivia as they pulled on some gloves. Olivia nodded and headed to the back of the rig. Olivia loaded the spinal board and medical bags onto the stretcher before she wheeled it over to Chase who was kneeling down next to their victim. He was leant up against a tree a few meters away from the curb.

"No pulse" Chase shook his head as he checked for a pulse.

"He's been dead for a while." He added, moving the guy's hood, revealing the true state of the body.

"Better call it in." Olivia stated as Chase stood up. He nodded.

"Err, Ambulance 67 to main, we need police on scene. Vic was D.O.A and has clearly been dead for a while." Olivia said into her radio as Chase pulled off his gloves and grabbed a sheet to cover the body, more to protect civilians than anything else.

"Copy that 67, hang tight, police en route."

Whilst waiting for the police, Olivia started taking the gear back to the ambulance as Chase kept passers-by away. They both looked down the street as a car came screeching round the corner.

"Get down!" Chase shouted to Olivia as he saw a gun appear out of the window. Everything happened so fast. Olivia dropped to the floor as gunshots rang out. She covered her head with her arms. As the car spun off down the street, Olivia pushed herself up from the ground. It was like everything was in slow motion. She looked around. Chase was on the floor not moving,

"Chase?!" Olivia stumbled over to him and dived down to her knees.

"Chase? Oh my god." She saw the gunshot wound to his abdomen.

"MAYDAY! MAYDAY! This is ambo 67! We need police and ambulance backup to our current location. We've been shot at, paramedic down. I repeat we've been shot at, and we have a paramedic down!" Liv screamed into her radio.

"Chase? Chase, look at me, you're gonna be okay." She said, pressing her hands down on Chase's abdomen where he was hit. She couldn't get up to grab the gear as he was bleeding too much. Chase jolted awake and instantly screamed in pain.

"Everything's going to be okay, okay? Help is on the way; you just have to stay with me." Olivia pleaded with him, trying to get him to stay awake. She kept talking to him, trying to get him to stay awake as she waited for back-up. Minutes felt like hours. She looked relieved when she heard sirens approaching. It wasn't just the police. As she looked down the street she saw Truck, Squad and Ambo 61 being led by police.

"I need trauma pads, 02 and fluids! He's bleeding out!" Olivia shouted to Sylvie before she could move any further away from the rig. She nodded and grabbed what Olivia had said as everyone else came over to help.

"What happened?" An officer asked Olivia.

"We were called to a hoax. As we started packing up, a car came out of nowhere and started shooting." Olivia struggled to explain as she focused on Chase. She worked with the others to help Chase.

"I'm going to need you to stay and answer some questions." The officer told Olivia as they loaded Chase onto the stretcher.

"Well, that's going to have to wait. If I move my hand, he'll bleed out." Olivia snapped at him as they raced over to the ambulance.

"Gallo drive." Casey said without hesitation, knowing they'd need the extra pair of hands in the back.

"81 and Squad will lead you in and block anything off." Severide told Olivia as they loaded Chase into the ambulance.

"Everyone move out!" Casey shouted as they closed the ambulance doors.

The whole ambulance ride was a blur. Before she knew it they had arrived at Chicago med. The doors flung open. They moved as quickly as they could to get Chase inside.

"Olivia." Olivia looked up from the hand-over as a familiar voice called her name. It was Antonio. She looked back at Chase as they swung into the cubicle. She kept her hand over the trauma dressing.

"He's bleeding a lot; I can't move my hand." Olivia told Connor as she joined the team of medics in the cubicle.

"I got it Liv, step back." Will reassured his friend. Olivia looked up and moved her hand away as Will took over holding pressure. She stepped back slowly and moved out of the way. She backed out of the cubicle and stood watching through the window.

"Liv." She flinched as Antonio placed his hands on her back and arm.

"Are you okay?" He asked her. Olivia looked at him.

"I'm okay...It's not my blood." She said shakily, looking down at the state she was in. She was covered in blood. Chase's blood.

"It's not my blood..." She whispered. Antonio stood by her side as she looked back and continued watching. They intubated Chase, gave him blood and stabilized him the best they could before taking him up for a CT scan to show the damage. They would be rushing him to the OR straight from radiology.

Everyone else was in the waiting room.

"They err, they just took him for a CT before taking him to the OR." Olivia told everyone as she walked into the waiting room with Antonio by her side.

"Liv, we need to get your statement." Ruzek told her. It was obvious that Intelligence would take on this case.

"Yeah, of course. I errm, I'm going to clean up first." Olivia nodded, before looking down at all the blood again.

"I'll be right back; can you take this?" She asked Antonio, handing him her radio belt. He nodded as she walked off to get cleaned up. In the bathroom, Olivia scrubbed and scrubbed until all of the blood was off her skin. She checked to make sure it was all off her face, arms, and hands before shutting the water off. She took some paper towels and dried herself off before looking in the mirror. She jumped slightly when there was a knock at the bathroom door. She threw the paper towels in the bin before walking out of the bathroom to find Casey standing there.

"I grabbed my hoodie from the truck and Maggie gave me this top to give to you." Casey told Liv, handing them over so she could get out of her blood soaked top and hoodie.

"Thanks Casey." Olivia flashed him a weak smile before she walked back into the bathroom. After changing, she binned the t-shirt and scrunched up her hoodie in her hands before walking back out and walking towards the waiting room. Antonio stopped her down the hall.

"I'm okay." She told him as he placed a hand on her cheek.

"I was so worried when I found out." He told her before he placed a kiss on her forehead.

"I'm okay, I hit the deck pretty quick." Olivia reassured him. She sighed as Antonio pulled her in for a tight hug.

"I better go give my statement so they can start working on this." Olivia said a few minutes later as they pulled a part.

After giving her statement to intelligence, Olivia went to head back inside.

"You should go help them, I'm okay." Olivia told Antonio.

"Are you sure?" He asked, rubbing her arm supportively.

"I'm okay, go. I'll let you know as soon as we hear anything or if I need you." Olivia reassured him.

"Okay. I love you." He smiled.

"I love you too." Olivia said before pecking him on the lips. He let go of her hand before he walked back over to his truck where Ruzek was waiting for him. Olivia waved as they pulled out of the parking bay and headed out before she headed back inside the hospital and up to the surgical waiting room where everyone had moved to now that Chase was in the OR. As she got upstairs, she quietly went and sat down in the corner by Severide where there was a free chair.

"Antonio went to help the others. Intelligence said they'd let us know if and when they find anything. There's a police car out front just in case anything else happens." Olivia told everyone before she rested her head back against the wall and closed her eyes.

After a few tense hours with everyone coming and going between calls, Olivia jumped up from her seat quickly when she saw Rhodes walking down the corridor. Luckily everyone had made it back from the last call out, so she wasn't alone anymore.

"How is he?" She asked him, knowing he was the one who had done the operation.

"Stable. We stopped the bleeding. The bullet hit his spleen and liver before it ricocheted and punctured his lung. We repaired the damage and placed a chest tube which will have to stay in for a few days as his lung re-expands." Connor told them all.

"Oh, thank god." Olivia sighed with relief as she ran her hands over her face.

"Thank you." Casey told Connor. He simply smiled and shook it off.

"We've just moved him to the ICU. One of you can come and sit with him." Connor told them all, looking mainly at Olivia.

"Olivia can. It's almost the end of shift so we need to get the rigs back to the station." Casey told her.

"Okay."

"I'll err, I'll get Antonio to grab my stuff for me later." Olivia stated, considering she was still in her uniform.
"Everyone clear out. We can come back and visit in a few days once he's out of the ICU." Casey told everyone.

"I'll see you later." As everyone left, they gave Olivia hugs or supportive arm pats.

"Let us know if you need anything." Severide told her.

"I will do, thanks guys." Olivia flashed him and Casey a weak smile before they left, and she walked off with Rhodes to the ICU where Chase was.

"He'll be asleep for a couple hours, but you can stay with him. I'll be around to keep an eye on him." Connor told her.

"Thanks Connor." Olivia smiled weakly as she sat down in the chair next to Chase's bed.

"Can I get you anything? A coffee? Soda? I'm just heading for a break anyways." Connor asked him.

"Err, maybe a soda?" Olivia asked him.

"Not a problem. I'll be back in a bit." He told her.

"Thanks Connor." She said again. He smiled as he left. Olivia looked at Chase.

A few hours later, Olivia was sitting, staring at Chase, still waiting for him to wake up. She was just dozing off when she heard someone walk in.

"How's he doing?" It was Casey.

"He's stable. He should be waking up anytime now. Connor's expecting him to make a full recovery within 6-8 weeks. He'll be up and mobile by the end of this week to mid next week." Olivia explained as she gratefully accepted the coffee, he was handing her. Normally it wasn't allowed in the ICU, but everyone knew that Liv had just come off a 24 hours and knew what she had been through in the last few hours so they were letting it slide.

"Good." Casey nodded as he sat down.

"And how are you doing?" He asked, looking at her. Olivia smiled slightly.

"Pretty shaken but I'm alright." She answered truthfully, knowing he would be able to see right through any lies. Olivia looked over as she caught a glimpse of Chase's arm moving slightly. She quickly sat upright, having been slumped in the chair, and leant forward.

"Chase?" She took his hand in hers and squeezed it. He groaned slightly as his eyes fluttered open. He moved his head around.

"Hi." A smile grew across Olivia's face as she saw him awake.

"You're okay..." He croaked, relieved.

"Me? You're the one who was shot silly." Olivia couldn't help but laugh.

"How are you feeling?" She asked him quietly.

"Like I've been shot." He laughed but groaned as it hurt.

"We're okay." Olivia whispered, squeezing his hand.

"We're okay." Chase squeezed her hand back.

"Everyone from 51 will be by at some point. We wanted to give you some time." Casey told Chase.

"Thank you."

"I'm going to head off, are you going to be alright?" Casey asked Olivia as he stood up.

"Yeah. Connor offered me a ride home. He finishes in a couple of hours. I'm just going to go home and sleep until Antonio gets home. Something tells me it's going to be a late night for them though, they're still trying to track down the person behind today." Olivia explained, both to Casey and to Chase, knowing he'd want to hear whether they had caught the people responsible.

"Okay well let me know if you need anything." He told her.

"I will do, thanks Casey." Olivia flashed him a smile. Case left, leaving Olivia alone with Chase.

After staying with Chase for a few more hours, Olivia left him sleeping peacefully. Connor had given her a ride home after his shift like he had offered. The first thing Olivia did when she got home was shower and change before she made herself something to eat. She barely stayed awake as she spoke to Antonio on the phone whilst snuggled up in bed.

"Okay, good. Let me know if you find anything else." She told him. He had just finished explaining where they were at with the shooting investigation. They had had a few leads so far but none of them had panned out so like Olivia had thought, it was going to be a long night for the intelligence unit.

"Are you going to get some sleep?" He asked her.

"I'm going to try." Olivia said quietly.

"Well, I'll keep you updated when I'll be home. I'll try to be quiet so I don't wake you." He told her, making her smile.

"I love you." He added.

"I love you too, stay safe." Olivia told him. They said their goodbyes before they hung up. Olivia reached over to put her phone on charge before she switched off the bedside light and curled up under the covers. As soon as she closed her eyes, she felt the exhaustion set in and she knew it wouldn't be long before she was fast asleep.
