Chapter 24 - Never Off Duty

Truck 81 pulled back into the firehouse and came to a halt. As everyone jumped out the rig, Olivia noticed someone familiar standing near the squad table talking to Severide and the others.
"What are you doing here?" Olivia asked the person as she crossed her arms over her chest. She stood standing at the person and everyone else looked on. After a few seconds Olivia and the person started smiling as Olivia started laughing.
"Ahh, it's so good to see you!!" Olivia exclaimed as she hugged Jack tightly.
"Guys, this is Jack Gibson. He's one of the lieutenants from my old station back in Seattle." Oliva said, introducing him to everyone. Olivia then introduced everyone to Jack. They spent a few minutes talking with everyone before Olivia walked outside with Jack to talk.
"So what are you doing here Jack?" Olivia asked as she leant against the hood of her car on the street as Jack had pulled into behind her car.
"I actually came out for a mates stag-do. I was in the area, so I thought I'd stop by." Jack explained.
"Well it's good to see you." Olivia said happily.
"You to. You seem happy here. They seem like a great bunch." Jack said happy to see that she was doing well.
"They are and I really like it here." Olivia responded. Jack looked at his watch.
"I better get going. My flight leaves in two hours." Jack said.
"Take care of yourself. Tell everyone I say hi." Olivia said as she pushed herself off her car.
"You to." Jack said, giving her another hug.

Truck 81, Ambulance 61, person in distress.
Oakley High School.

The alarm sounded, alerting Olivia and the others to another call.
"They're calling my name." Olivia grinned as she backed up.
"Bye!!" She called out as she started running back towards the firehouse. Jack smiled and watched as they all geared up and got into the fire truck before they pulled out onto the street. Olivia waved as the truck drove past Jack as it headed to the call.

The next morning, Olivia was waiting out front of the firehouse, waiting for Antonio who was picking her up. It had been a long shift and she had to admit that she was tired, but she was excited as she was going out of town for a few days with Antonio. After a few minutes, he pulled up in his truck. They had packed everything the day before so that they could leave right after Olivia's shift. She smiled as she climbed into the passenger seat.
"Hey." She said, giving him a kiss.
"Long night?" Antonio asked, being able to tell how tired she was. Olivia nodded as she sat back and pulled on her seatbelt.
"This weekend is going to be great." He said as he started driving. Olivia smiled happily as she nodded her head in agreement.

"Wakey, wakey sleepy head, we're here." Antonio said gently shaking Olivia to wake her up. He was standing her the passenger side doorway. Olivia shifted as she woke up.
"Hmm..." She said groggily.
"You fell asleep. We're here." He said as she woke up more.
"Oh." Olivia said reaching to undo her seatbelt. Antonio went to grab their bags from the trunk as Olivia climbed out the trunk. She left her work bag in the car and grabbed the keys to the cabin from Antonio who had picked them up earlier that day. She went to unlock the door as Antonio locked the truck and followed her.
"Wow, this place is amazing!" Olivia exclaimed as she looked around. Antonio had been in charge of booking their weekend away and he had been very secretive about it, only telling Olivia where it was roughly and nothing else.
"Told you you'd like it." Antonio said wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. Olivia grinned and spun around in his arms so she could wrap her arms around her.
"Thank you for arranging this." She whispered before she leant in and crashed her lips against his.
"I need to go have a shower as I'm all gross from work but after that, I'm all yours." Olivia grinned as she backed away from him slowly. She grabbed her back from the floor before she went to look around the rest of the cabin and find the bathroom.
"Or you could join me." She called from down the corridor once she was out of sight. She heard Antonio laugh before she heard footsteps.
"I think...that's...a great...idea." Antonio said between kisses after he snuck up on her.

A few hours later they were both cuddled together on the bed. It was later and they were both enjoying the silence.
"We should have done this sooner." Olivia said she traced her finger over the tattoo on Antonio's chest.
"I just realised I never actually told anyone the reasons behind us coming here." Olivia laughed.
"One year today." Antonio said happily.
"And it's been an amazing year." Olivia responded as she looked at him.
"It's crazy to think how much has changed in the year and a half I've been here." Olivia said, only just realising how long she had been in Chicago. The time had flown by with soo much happening, and it was extremely hard to grasp that it had actually been that long.
"Has it really been that long?" Antonio asked surprised.
"Yep. I was here for about four months before I met you properly and then we started dating about a month later." Olivia explained, smiling as she remembered back to how they met. Olivia rolled back as Antonio started to sit up.
"This might seem kind of crazy but here me out." Antonio said as he got up from the bed and grabbed something from his jacket on the floor. Olivia sat up against the headboard holding the blanket around her.
"Like you said, it's been a crazy year. A lot has happened. I got shot, you had a bad period of PTSD, life is unpredictable. Especially with our jobs." Antonio said, confusing Olivia a little.
"And it might be a bit soon, but I've been thinking about this a lot lately." He added.
"Olivia Fletcher, I choose you. I want you for the rest of my life. So, I'm asking you...will you marry me?" Antonio asked kneeling down by the bed and holding out a ring box to Olivia. Olivia pulled her hands over her mouth in shock as a tear fell down her cheek.
"Yes!" She choked out. Antonio got up as Olivia leant over and took the ring. She slipped it on her finger.

"Are you sure?" She asked making Antonio laugh.
"Guess I'm stuck with you now." He teased, earning a playful punch from Olivia.
"I think we should celebrate." Olivia grinned as she pulled Antonio back down to the bed. Antonio nodded as he crashed his lips against hers.

48 hours later and they were back in Chicago. Olivia was still in shock, but they had agreed to keep it a secret until they could tell everyone together.
"So it's decided then, you're moving into my place?" Olivia confirmed. They had been planning a few things during the drive back to town and their living situation was defiantly one.
"Your place is bigger. Has the spare room for if any of the kids want to stay and my lease is up in a few weeks anyways." Antonio said reasonably.
"The kids are welcome anytime. There's a single bed in the spare room and sofa bed." Oliva said squeezing his hand as they pulled up outside her place.
"This weekend was really nice, thank you." Olivia grinned as she let them into her apartment. They had just gotten back. The first thing Olivia did was dump her bag on the floor by the couch before she flicked on the TV. On the way home she had heard about the fire that was blazing across town and she wanted to see how things were doing.
"...as things only escalate here, more services are called to the scene. I'm hearing now that this has just been escalated to a five-alarm fire meaning all available units across town are being brought in." The new presenter said.
"Holy shi-!" Olivia exclaimed, shocked at what she was seeing.
"You should go." Antonio told her.
"Are you sure?" Olivia asked as she turned to face him. He nodded. Olivia smiled and thanked him before she ran to change into a pair of leggings and one of her CFD t-shirts.
"Come on, I'll drive you." Antonio offered, considering his truck, which was parked out front, had sirens. Olivia pulled on a hoodie and pair of trainers before they ran out to Antonio's truck. He flicked on the sirens as he headed to the firehouse so Olivia could grab her gear. As they headed to the firehouse, Olivia put her ring back in the box and in Antonio's pocket until she could buy a chain to keep it on whilst she was at work and until they had told everyone.

Within a few minutes Antonio pulled up outside the firehouse, right outside the door. Olivia hopped out of the front and ran inside, straight to the turnout gear room. After searching for her gear, she kicked off her trainers and started pulling on her turnout pants.
"What are you doing here?" A familiar voice asked from behind Olivia. She turned to see Severide who also had been away for the weekend with some mates.
"Looks like we had the same idea." Olivia grinned as he pulled on his gear.
"Grab a CBA, Antonio's outside with his truck." Olivia told him as she pulled on her jacket and grabbed her helmet. The pair grabbed a CBA each before they rushed out to Antonio's truck. They dumped their CBAs in the bed of the truck before they climbed in.
"Great minds think alike." Olivia laughed as Antonio headed towards the fire.
"Hey Kelly, want to hear a secret?" Olivia asked wanting to tell someone at least.
"Okay."
"But you can't tell any of the others yet." Olivia said looking back at him. He nodded.
"We're getting married." Olivia beamed.
"Really? That's great news! Congratulations guys!!" Kelly exclaimed happily as he squeezed Liv's shoulder supportively.
"We're going to tell everyone in a few days at Molly's but for now we're keeping it a secret. You're the only person that knows.
"Halstead also knows." Antonio added as he focused on driving.
"You're one of two people that know." Olivia said correcting herself making them all laugh.

With the time of day it was and the sirens, it wasn't long before they pulled up at the fire scene behind some of the trucks.
"Be careful." Antonio said as Olivia went to climb out.
"Always." She promised before she leaned over and kissed him. Without saying anything else she jumped out of the truck, grabbed her tank before she went to find 51 with Severide.
"Chief! Where do you want us?" Severide called out as they found Boden and the rest of 51 who weren't in the building.
"Thank you for coming." Boden nodded appreciatively. Olivia and Severide smiled.
"You two pair together. Everyone who's outside has something assigned. Join the rest of Truck 81 on the third and fourth floor." Boden instructed them.
"Copy that Chief." Olivia said. She walked closer to the building with Severide after they grabbed a haligan each from the truck and knelt down so she could pull on her mask.
"You got this." Severide said tapping Olivia's shoulder knowing she was probably nervous. The last time she had been in a fire this bad, things didn't go too well. Olivia nodded as they stood up. Staying together, they walked into the building and got to work.

"Go! I got him!!" Olivia shouted to Severide.
"Are you sure?" He asked, not wanting to leave her on her own.
"I got him. Go help Casey!" Olivia told him. He nodded and carried on as Olivia pulled the webbing out of her pocket. She lopped it around the guy's wrists before she got up and started pulling him towards the staircase. She took deep steady breaths as she kicked open the door and pulled the guy into the stairwell. She pulled him so he was sitting up against the wall before she knelt down and pulled him over her shoulder. Gritting her teeth, she pulled herself back up and started heading down the stairs at a steady pace. As she headed out the front, Boden and paramedics came over to help her. They lowered the guy onto the gurney.
"Pulse is strong. Let's get him on some O2." One of the paramedics said as Olivia pulled off her mask. The medics wheeled the guy away.
"Nice work Liv." Boden said patting her on the shoulder. Liv smiled.
"Severide I got my guy out. Where are you?" Olivia asked over her radio, getting ready to head back in.
"Me and Casey are bringing out two more victims." Severide responded.
"Chief! We need assistance on 3. I've got a seriously injured woman up here." Kidd came over the radio. Olivia looked at Boden and ran to grab a back board before she headed inside the building.
"Olivia's on her way up with a spinal board now." Boden said over the radio. When she got into the stairwell, Olivia stopped to quickly pull on her mask before she continued up the stairs at a steady pace.
"Kidd?!" Olivia called out. The smoke was quite thick on floor three, so she knew they didn't have a lot of time.
"Over here!!" Liv heard Kidd call out from down the hall. She walked down the hallway, keeping her hand on the wall, until she came across Kidd and Mouch with a victim.
"What happened to her?" Liv asked kneeling down on the ground.
"Looks like she was trampled as they all rushed down from higher levels." Kidd responded.
"Mouch help me roll her. Kidd hold her c-spine." Liv instructed as she placed the board on the ground. Together the three of them got the women onto the spinal board. Kidd placed the c-collar that Liv had also brought around the woman's neck before they carefully started moving her to the stairwell. Within a few minutes, they were outside and handing the woman over to paramedics. Liv pulled off her mask and went to grab a bottle of water from the truck. She downed half the water before she poured the rest over her face to cool off.
"That's it. Everyone out. The fire's jumping floors. We'll take a tactical position from outside." The chief on the scene called over the radio. The fire had gotten to the point of no return so now they just had to wait for it to burn out to a point where they could control it once again. Liv knew that it was going to be a long night.

Early the next morning Liv snuck back into her place. She knew Antonio had stayed the night there and she wasn't sure whether she was awake.
"The fire continues to burn but has dropped from a five-alarm fire to a two-alarm fire. Units will be here all day, but it seems the fire is under control and will hopefully be out completely later today." Liv heard the familiar voice of their local news channel. As she kicked off her trainers and walked into the apartment further, she found Antonio sat on the couch in a pair of joggers and a t-shirt, watching the news with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Morning." Olivia said diving down on the sofa next to him and snuggling into the side of his chest.
"Long night?" Antonio asked kissing the top of her head.
"Uh-huh." Liv mumbled as she closed her eyes.
"We got pulled from the fire an hour ago. It's a lot more under control now. Severide dropped me back." Olivia said opening her eyes again. She was exhausted and wanted to sleep but she needed a shower first as she was covered in crap from the fire.
"I'm going to go have a shower." Olivia yawned as she got up.
"I'll make us some breakfast." Antonio said also getting up.
"Thank you." Olivia grinned. She gave him another kissed before she headed to the bedroom as Antonio headed to the kitchen.

Here's a double length chapter to make up for it 😊
Also....THEY'RE ENGAGED!! Funny enough that wasn't actually planned and was completely spontaneous whilst I was writing this chapter, so I hope you like it.
