23: Meanwhile

As of that moment, Louis, Legoshi and the Shishigumi stood in front of a Civet who was the leader of the Kopi Luwak Research Organization asking for information on Melon.

"In the same way I digest messily blended coffee beans to make top quality coffee, I research the unknown possibilities of mixed species and see for myself how worthy they are as animals." The civet explained.

Louis saw the valid thought in the argument-- it was a very logic based approach. Legoshi did not find it valid in the least bit-- it was elitist, to think someone alone could judge anothers worthiness. But that was the difference between an herbivore and a carnivore in the current society.

"I see..." Louis spoke first. "So you already know about the hybrid Melon."

"Of course! He's the leopard-gazelle hybrid, isn't he? He's a smart animal and very intriguing." After a discussion of funding broke out, he continued. "You see, we're easily misunderstood, me and my bats. One was just reported to the police by a Komodo Dragon for 'terrorizing a hybrid daycare' if you can believe it! I mean, what's the harm in monitoring for research?"

If the group had known that it was to produce false research against the mixing of species-- to explain how dangerous and unnatural they were-- perhaps they would have left right then. But instead, they agreed to trade favors.

Meanwhile, Melon moped in the cafeteria of the school he taught at.

In my search for 'taste' I got myself involved with countless crimes and have been through all kinds of work. The tusk trade's manager... the bloodbone drug's producer... the shishigumi's boss... While I was in those positions, I have tried to eat many animals, only to spit them out.  In the end, everything tastes like sand to me. He took a bite of the herbivore food in front of him. It was a delicate dance, to pull his mask down only enough to slip the food in. Even the cafeteria's shriveled up tomatoes have the same sandy flavor as the animals I killed while they begged me to spare their lives. I graduated from a good university and have perpetuated my killing spree for one reason only. To know what it feels like to eat something 'delicious'. Just once is all I ask... And that bitch has to try and take it away from me. That stupid Beastar, hiding my little maned wolf away. And now my bun is cooking in her oven, I can hardly stop drooling over the thought of the taste.

I had the realization earlier that there's no need for me to wait the entire gestation period. As soon as it's enough for a few bites, I can tear it out of her and give it a try. If I love it, I'll just change my mode of operation. If not, then I'm on to the next idea... All I have to do... is find her.
