18: For Worse

Yahya snorted and slammed the table as he stood up.

"Absolutely! This is ridiculous, Gosha! He wants to eat the damn thing, not raise it! And don't think that holding it will change his mind; he doesn't have the capability to love. He left the girl behind in an instant."

"I understand, I understand, but I think it's not something to take lightly."

"Well here's this for not taking lightly. If she has the little hybrid, you know who's going to want to take care of it? Legoshi." Yahya was in Gosha's face.

"And why would my grandson be interested in this situation at all? He is compassionate but not to a fault... usually."

"Because, Gosha," Gouhin sighed. "He's been scouring the city for this little maned wolf. It's us who has been hiding her for our own benefit."

"What?" You looked at the men around you. "He's... looking for me?"

"Desperately." Yahya stated. "In fact, he's chasing after Melon right now in order to get more information about you."

"And you let him!?" Gosha was dripping venom with anger. "Why on Earth wouldn't you simply tell him she was here?!"

"Leverage, my old partner." Yahya snorted again. "I needed help, he would only help if it involved her."

"Find him. Come with me to find him right now. Alert everyone." Gosha left the grandfatherly persona behind and became substantially more deadly.

Meanwhile, Legoshi was still at the beach as the night fell.

Maybe Melon looks at the sea in complete solitude, longing for someone to understand him. I don't think I can be that animal  for him, but I do want to know him better...

Suddenly, his eat was hold and his face was wet. As he touched it with his hand, he fingers became coated in blood. Another bullet had hit him, although less critically.

"Boom shaka-laka! And this is where I come in!" Melon sang out, twirling his gun dangerously. "A young male, son of a leopard mother and a gazelle father... what more could you ask for a tragic hero?!" The lions of the Shishigumi were behind him now. "And what's a scene that a tragic hero can't go without? The one where he looks at the sea with a forlorn gaze!"Melon paused and tilted his head. It had been a trap. "Like that? I'm good, aren't I? 'I'm lonely... I feel like it's showering every day... I'm lonesome!' Bwahaha! Hey, kid! Could you be the one animal who understands me?!" Melon laughed more. "A hybrids five senses are keen to obscene proportions. I knew exactly where you were going to be. I knew that you have been tailing me for quite a while now, though I didn't expect you to survive that bullet: that was a shocker... You know, all that tattooist does is repeat the same cringeworthy one-liners. And yet.." more giggles, "you took him seriously and oh man, the look on your face when you were looking at the sea..." Melon lost it once again for several minutes. The lions took this opportunity to hold him hostage. "Man oh man oh man oh man oh man!!! I wanted to direct a tragedy but NOPE! A comedy suits you better! Oh man my stomach hurts this is so funny!" But suddenly he stopped laughing. "Hey. Did you pity me because you thought I was worrying about my hybrid identity problems? You know, I thought about this since the day you let me escape, but the world must REALLY treat you nicely!"

It was at this moment that Legoshi knew that evil truly existed.

Melon sighed. "A little expressionless birdie at a hospital told me that my Chrysocyon brachyurus is going to have my baby. I've got to go get her. I mean, you have brought a lot of pleasure into my flavorless life-- exceeded my expectations actually. Thank you, thank you, but I got to see you make a nice face and that should hold me off for the next few months. At least until my next meal is born." His toothy grin made everyone sick to their core. "And I have to do my part to treat my henchmen. You can eat him now guys," Melon turned and waved as he left. "Just make sure you kill him this time."
