Kitty or Dragon
She had kept running from Vatik after having both insulted one man, while downing one of his guards in order to escape the underground. After that, as she had been advised by the hellbeast, Calistria had decided to go north to see what was out there. She had never thought about ever going north as much of it was just barren snowy wastelands and a few hunters that took up residence in the area. One of those so called hunters happened to be her uncle Kywin Sofield, younger brother to her late father and Aunt Shaela -- his twin sister.
As much as she didn't want to, she had gone to him for housing until she figured a direct northerly route to wherever she felt she was going.
Pounding on the door had Calistria startling from her nice warm slumber, tucked completely under the weight of heavy quilts made of furs from her uncle's hunts. The warmth penetrated her skin, causing goosebumps to rise as her head poked out from underneath the handmade quilt. The cool air of the icy northern mountains broke through the logs making up the cabin her uncle Kywin lived in, causing a shiver to race through her body as she tried to stretch out the kinks in her body.
However, something felt extremely off as she was doing so.
Blinking open her tired golden eyes, her fingers stretched out as far as hey would go, Calistria noticed something was immediately wrong with this image. Everything looked so much larger than what it actually had been and her arms were covered in what looked like fluffy white fur.
Sitting up straight, Calistria was now wide awake, even more so now that she noticed the pounding on the door. Her head swiveling to look towards he now giant piece of wood that separated her and her Uncle.
"Cali, get your butt out of bed. I need my room back and you stated only one night. Time to get a move on."
Kywin didn't sound too thrilled that she was still tucked away in his bed and hadn't moved on from his home. Though, she couldn't blame him. She did just end up on his doorstep without so much as a word beforehand.
Opening her mouth to speak, Calistria clapped her hands over it to silence herself when nothing more than a little meow came slipping out. No, they weren't hands that were clapped over her hands. Instead, she found herself holding two little paws over her mouth, horrified by what she was seeing. However, this did explain why the bed looked absolutely ginormous to her now than when she went to bed the previous night.
"Was that a cat in there!?"
The annoyance in her uncle's voice drew Calistria's attention once more to the bedroom door. She couldn't let him see her like this, but at the same time, she had some serious questions she wanted to ask him. She wanted to know why this was happening to her, why she was suddenly a little white fluff ball of a cat and no longer human.
"I'm coming in there!"
The door began to rattle a little, perking Calistria up as she glanced around the room to try and find somewhere to hide. However, before she even had the chance to move, the door flung open and her uncle came barging into the room. His eyes were instantly on her now fluffy white body, her ears pressed against her head as she lowered herself down against the mattress as much as she possibly could. Maybe if she played the cute card, she could get some sympathy from her uncle and buy her some time to find an answer to this new problem that has arisen.
Calistria, sadly, wasn't that lucky.
Walking over towards her, Kywin reached down and snatched her up by. . . not the scruff of her neck. Instead, a twinge of pain shot through her tiny shoulder blades as she kicked her little paws screaming and wailing. Her uncle had hoisted her up by what she could only describe as little dragon wings protruding from her back.
"What in the world are you?"
The question left Kywin's lips as he turned and made his way out of the bedroom, wondering where his niece had disappeared to.
With a dismissive shake of his head, Kywin walked to the front door and opened it. The cold air hitting like a bunch of daggers on the man's exposed flesh, but to Calistria, it didn't bother her at all. It felt like any spring wind that would blow through her forest cottage back home, a welcoming breeze to the warmth that seemed to remain on her fuzzy little body.
"You know what, I would have no problems killing you right now just for sneaking into my home. However, seeing as you're so tiny, I'm going to give you a chance out there."
Calistria knew her Uncle Kywin was speaking from a hunter point of view, which wasn't too comforting to her. In fact, just being given a head start by such a man was not an ideal thing. He was a hunter and would come after her the first chance that he had.
As she was tossed out the door, her paws flailing around and eyes wide, a yowl left her tiny muzzle before she plopped comfortably in the soft powdery snow. The door closed for a moment, opening only slightly as she poked her head out of the snow and peeked towards it. It was as if her Uncle was having second thoughts about throwing her out. Her luck, however, wasn't that great seeing as he closed the door once more after kicking a bit of snow back outside.
"Well, isn't this quite the predicament?"
The sultry sound of a woman speaking floated to her ears from somewhere nearby. Calistria nearly panicked, unable to truly pinpoint the exact location of her sudden stalker.
"Who's there, show yourself!"
To whoever was out there, she sounded as if she was yelling at them. However, to the human ear, she was just meowing and hissing, seeming angry that she had been thrown out of the home like she was.
"But darling, I haven't been hiding myself at all. I never have from you."
Within that moment, Calistria watched as a beautiful white falcon with silver tipped wings and tail floated down from the snowy treetops of the evergreens. Her black eyes were locked onto the small white kitten form she was now in, landing mere inches from her with her sharp talons digging into the fresh snow that surrounded them. For a second, there seemed to be silence as the falcon took in her form, including the dragon-like wings that had sprouted from her shoulders upon entering this form.
"Interesting. I haven't seen something like this in a long. . . very long time."
"So you have seen it?"
The falcon was her friend, Silverwing, now that she managed to have a good look. It helped her relax and surprised her that she was able to speak with the bird like she was.
"On one of my flights around he kingdom, yes."
"Then what is it?"
Silverwing was her closest family member, like a child to the small Calistria. She had raised her up since she was nothing more than a hatchling from the nest after her egg had been abandoned within it.
Calistria prodded over, her paws being thrown out to the side as she waddled through the snow to come stand at Silverwing's side. Her curious look pinned the young bird, her dragon-like wings wrapping around her small frame as she was unsure of what to do with them.
"What do you make of these? Last I checked, kittens don't have dragon wings."
She stated, flexing one of them as if she knew how to do so all this time.
Silverwing sighed, shaking her head before lifting her own wing out. It stretched to the side in all of its glory, powerful and strong whenever she was able to take flight.
"Tis a wing darling, a dragon one by the looks of it. However, I know of no dragons to be around here anymore. All wiped out within a blink of an eye."
For effect, she winked one of her beady black eyes towards Calistria, a smirk seeming to grow upon the falcon's sharp beak.
"Dragon wings!? HOW!"
"I'm. . . not sure."
The uncertainty in Silverwing's voice sounded forced, almost as if she was trying to hide something from her that she was refusing to open up about. This only had Calistria bristling and standing once more to face the white falcon that stood before her.
"Not sure? Yet you stated that you knew something, had seen this somewhere before."
As if ignoring the statements just thrown at her, Silverwing turned her head to the horizon and watched the light sparkle off the snow tipped trees. She blinked a couple of times and shook out her feathers as if something had gotten on them and turned back towards her young -and now small- master.
"How about I find a way to fix you up, so you're not a tiny little kitty anymore. Then we can talk."
Silverwing tilted her head to the side, curiosity swirling within her dark orbs. Calistria on the other hand looked frustrated, ready to maul the young falcon with her tiny little teeth and newly sharpened claws. However, she would never do that to her friend and baby.
"Fine, but we speak of it afterwards. Something is obviously going on and I can't be turning into a cat. . . dragon. . . thing, all the time."
"Right and I completely agree with that. Now you come hide in the trees darling, I'll be back before sundown with an answer."
As the only close family member she had took off into the sky, Calistria watched Silverwing's silver wings shimmer in the bright light of the morning.
"Well, there's a ton of explaining to do. If not Silverwing, then my uncle will do some talking."
Calistria grumbled as she turned and hobbled through the thick snow to a nearby tree with a nook in it.
Pulling her draconic wings in tightly, she squeezed her way into the hole and looked around the barren area. It was covered in dirt, but it was free of snow and dryer than most places. On top of that, it was dark and nothing else was inside to make it its home. It would become her shelter from the outside and from her uncle's hunting prowess as well. She would remain as long as she could, waiting on Silverwing to return with a solution to whatever had happened to her. And, she would get that explanation she wanted one way or another.
