Things Change, But some Don't
I was out of school for three weeks
Enough time for my knee to heal so I could use crutches instead of wheeling around in a wheel chair.
But in those three weeks...things changed.
And I mean...changed.
I noticed it right away when I got here.
My friends weren't outside talking waiting for Kyle.
They were inside talking to William Somers, aka one of the nerdiest boys at this school.
That was weird considering the only times they would talk to him is when they wanted homework done.
They would make fun of his clothes and glasses that were to big for him.
The glasses part making me ditch mine and use contacts at school.
And not only that.
The cheerleaders were hanging out with the theatre kids....which is something I would've never expected.
But what really hit me hard, was seeing Whitney sitting by herself at lunch in a hoodie and sweatpants.
Melody took Whitneys place at the cheerleader table, well...that cheerleaders and several other girls who I had never seen.
"What the hell happened to our school in the weeks I was gone?" I ask, setting my crutches down and sitting next to Tyler and Kyle.
"Melody" Kyle smiles "She really changed everyones view on everything"
"And what's with Whitney?" I ask.
"I posted the plan she had to drive Melody out of here on snap and Instagram" Tyler says "I felt like that was the least I could do for Mel" Tyler shrugs.
I nod.
So basically Melody is the new Whitney but nicer and Whitney took Melodys place but still is a bitch....Huh.
I zone out as they start talking about a party that was happening this weekend at Kyles.
Why would Tyler do that? It could've backlashed and Tyler would've been the one sitting alone.
He also hurt Melody so why would he...
Unless.
I look over at him to find him glancing over at Melody across the lunch room.
He likes Melody!
Something about this fact makes my stomach turn.
The thought of them together and Tyler breaking her heart made me want to punch a wall.
Melody is my best friend, and sure, Tyler is my friend and he was my best friend at some point in time, but the fact that he followed Whitneys plan made me pissed.
Ty had visited me a few times in the hospital, we played video games for about an hour and he would leave, we never really talked about the situation.
Yet again, to society we aren't the kind to "Talk it out."
Tyler looks back at us and notices me smirking and raising my eyebrow basically saying "I know who you like" with my eyes.
He shakes it off and joins the conversation.
"What do you say James?" Kyle asks "You in?"
"For what?"
"The party, come on you need to have some fun, you've been cooped up in the hospital for weeks" Henry answers.
I shrug, Not being sure.
"Well think about it, It's at my house on Friday, 7pm" Kyle explains.
"Okay, I'll think about it" I say.
"That a kid" Kyle smiles, patting my back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I check my phone and still nothing.
I guess my mom forgot me....great.
As I start walking in the direction of my house Tylers car pulls up beside me "Need a ride?"
I nod and Ty gets out of the car, Opening the passengers seat for me.
"Such a gentleman" I laugh.
"I know, it runs in my blood" He laughs.
I get in, throwing my crutches into the back of his car.
He closes the door and hops back into the drivers seat "I can't believe you were gonna try and walk home" He says, shaking his head.
"I had no other choice" I state.
"You could've called your mom" Tyler says, staring to drive.
"She forgot about me" I shrug.
"You could've called me, or Kyle, Or Melody" Tyler explains.
"Yeah yeah" I sigh, looking out the window "Speaking of Melody"
I look over at him "You like her...don't you"
Tylers face goes red "I-I wouldn't exactly say like"
"You do like her!" I laugh "One, I saw you glancing over at her during lunch, Two, you never would've outed Whitney because of the thought of it going wrong, unless it was to impress Melody, and three your face hasn't been that red since Gwen Peters" I point out.
"Okay, Maybe I do like her, so what?" He asks.
"Dude you've got it bad" I shake my head.
"No I don't!" Tyler states.
"We sound like girls" I chuckle.
"We? No No No, you sound like a girl making fun of her friend" Tyler nods.
"Her friend who is also a girl and has a crush!" I laugh.
Tyler tries to hold in his laughter "Okay, Okay you got me there"
We both start laughing.
When it dies down it's silent for a few seconds before I speak back up.
"Are you going to ask her out?" I ask.
"I..I think I'm going to ask her to Kyles party" He states.
My smile fades "Oh"
"You don't think I should?" Tyler asks.
"No! I do, I just don't think she'll like a loud party with drunk teenagers making mistakes and dancing like idiots" I shrug.
"Maybe...Is it a bad idea?" Tyler asks.
"I don't know" I say "But I guess we'll see"
Tyler nods, pulling up next to the curb by my house.
"Here we are" Tyler smiles.
Ryan was in the drive-way, shooting hoops with his basketball.
I roll down my window "Is mom here?"
"Yeah! She's inside with dad!" Ryan shouts.
"Your dad is in town?" Tyler asks.
"Yeah" I nod "He visited me last Thursday in the hospital, he must've got his stay extended" I explain.
I open the car door and Tyler gets out, rushing over to help me.
"I'm not a damsel in destress" I laugh.
"You're broken, yes you are" Tyler states, grabbing my crutches from the back seat.
He hands them to me and I get out of the car, closing the door and steadying myself on my crutches.
"Tyler!" Ryan smiles, running over to him, hugging him.
"Hey Homie" Tyler smiles.
"What are you doing here?" Ryan asks.
"I drove James home" Tyler explains, kneeling down to Ryans size.
Ryan nods "Can you stay? We can play Basketball!"
"Would it be okay with you mom?" Tyler asks.
"Ty, You know she would" I laugh.
Tyler nods and gets up "Okay, James is ref"
"Got it" I nod, going over to our patio table and sitting in a chair, lifting my leg onto another chair to elevate it.
They start playing a game of one on one, Tyler dying it down for Ryan to win.
Tyler was in Football, Basketball and, Baseball.
Somehow being able to juggle them all.
"Come on loser! I thought you were on varsity" Ryan laughs.
"Hey that's a penalty for smack talking" Tyler says.
"There's no such thing!" Ryan states.
"How would you know?" Tyler asks "Ref, Call it"
"Hmmm, my drive-way my rules and I say Tyler gets two free throws" I nod.
"Ha! Hand over the ball little man" Tyler smirks.
Ryan pouts and hands Tyler the ball.
Tyler misses the first throw but gets the second.
"Ha!" Tyler smiles.
"Boys!" My mom yells out the door of the garage "Oh, hi Tyler!"
"Hi miss Wells" Tyler smiles.
"How are you?" My mom asks.
"Good!" Tyler says "How about you?"
"I'm doing good" My mom smiles.
Ryan steals the ball from Tyler and makes a basket.
"Ryan wins!" I say, calling the game.
"Wait! No, I wasn't paying attention" Tyler frowns.
"That sounds like a you problem" Ryan sasses.
Tyler narrows his eyes at Ryan, grabbing him and flipping him upside down.
"Take that back!" Tyler laughs.
"No!" Ryan laughs.
Just like the good old days, everything seemed so simple back then.
Now...I'm graduating in a year and have to go to college.
Oh boy....
